pickI wasn‘t originally planning on re-reading this first installment of the Antonia Scott trilogy, but I‘m glad! It‘s been two years almost exactly since I read this the first time & while I remembered most of the larger plot points, I appreciated refreshing myself with the characters, details & what seems like a set up for the second book! Exciting, fast-paced & well-balanced, this book translated from Spanish makes for a great read (and re-read!)!
pickIt takes an amazing writer like Brubaker to take the tired, beaten-down ‘vigilante‘ trope and breathe new life into it (with a supernatural twist). A depressed grad student tries to commit suicide but instead becomes enthralled by a dark power that propels him to take lives or suffer consequences. Another crime classic by Brubaker. Recommended!

At one point as a #longtimefed I was pretty familiar with the Miami airport, whether as the destination or a transit point. I also spent a long day at the airport greeting arriving participants and getting them onto the right shuttle bus. For another conference, my room overlooked the main runway.
Anyway, in addition to the sandwiches from La Careta, I also like the artwork on the walls.
so-soI love the first half of this story, with the spy mystery vibe and the incredible color schemes. The conclusion to this tale is just not as good as the first half, although the ending is appropriate. I‘m not sure why I feel this way, but the energy and forward momentum subside in this half. It feels like the story winds down to its somber conclusion. The end is pretty melancholic, so maybe it has to be this way. Still worth reading!

pickHere is another audiobook from the haze that was February. It‘s a gritty tale of two brothers who have been surviving on their own since their teens. Everything gets turned upside down early one morning when one of them has an accident. The book walks a fine line by making the reader empathize with everything the main characters have been through while not hiding how absolutely stupid and horrible some of their decisions are.
