Pickpick

Decent crime fiction. This was a random library pick because it‘s an Edgar winner, has a 4.42 on GR, and Dennis Lehane recommended it. I was curious about the Hard Case Crime covers, and they all seem to be like this! (There‘s almost no sex in this one. 😙)

This book should be read in a club chair while drinking a Manhattan.

This is my 3rd Highsmith. I can see why people do not like this as much as Ripley, it involves more than one toxic person and leaves you wondering who to root for. I think it is very well crafted, a train wreck that is hard to look away from. PH is one of the best at characters that are spiraling, and this is eerily plausible.
⭐3.75/5

“Is that a threat?“
“Take it the way you like.“
“Are you going to put arsenic in my food?“
“I don't think arsenic could kill you.“
It was a charming evening.

Has anyone seen the 2022 adaptation of this book? I think with the right people it could be wonderful.

My Dark Places | James Ellroy
post image

#DynamicDs #Dark James Ellroys mother Jean was found murdered in suburban LA , left by the side of the road , murderer never found , case closed . James was only 10. He feels that his obsession with his mom‘s memory is largely responsible for his crime novels set in L.A. This book is part memoir , part story of Ellroy working with Detective Bill Stoner to see if even so many years later there is something to be learned about the case.

The Postman Always Rings Twice, by James M. Cain (1934)

Premise: A drifter arrives at a California service station, setting off a dark chain of events.

Review: This classic is noir fiction at its absolute best: atmospheric, hard-boiled, and no-holds-barred
Cont.

Mattsbookaday Read this if you enjoy crime fiction and gritty story-telling, but if you need likable or relatable characters you‘d probably be best to skip it. Content warnings for conspiracy, violence, and anti-Mediterranean-origin prejudice.

Bookish Pair: For another classic piece of noir literature, Dashiell Hammett‘s The Maltese Falcon (1930).

41/100 There is a killer lose in Gotham, named Midnight, who takes the heart of their victims. Working with some of Batman's most notorious foes, Joker, Scarecrow, Clayface, they wreak terror on the city. The story is kind of clunky, exposition heavy, and Midnight's true identity is pretty obvious. What saves this from a so-so rating, is the amazing artwork by Kelly Jones. Jones truly captures Batman as a creature of the night, and since this ⬇️

RamsFan1963 is more a horror comic than a superhero one, the designs of Batman, Midnight, and Gotham itself, brings the story up a notch or two. Jones reminds me a lot of Bernie Wrightson, who was a master of horror comics. 3 ⭐⭐⭐💫 #Read2025 #SeriesLove2025 1mo

In this atmospheric noir novel set in Mexico in the 1970s, Maite is a dissatisfied secretary who livens up her life with romance comics, lies, and the occasional petty theft, while Elvis is a member of the Hawks, hired thugs trained to violently disrupt student protests. As they both become embroiled in the search for a missing young woman, Maite and Elvis each seek escape through music and glimpses of beauty in a tedious and often violent world.

#DynamicDs #Detective #OldSchool The tagged book is a collection of stories , The Maltese Falcon brought us Sam Spade , The Big Sleep , Phillip Marlowe .
Humphrey Bogart played both of those roles , & as you can see from the cover , Robert Mitchum played Marlowe in a remake . Good stuff !

Eggs Excellent stuff 👏🏻 1mo
