Woo hoo! I'm done with work for the week so I had time to consider my favorite philosophers. I don't know if I live my life by their words, but their works and lives have blown my mind.

1. Simone de Beauvoir
2. Mary Wollstonecraft
3. Judith Butler
4. Audre Lorde
5. Hypatia of Alexandria

Thanks for the tag @jdtchicago! I'm tagging anyone who hasn't shared yet. Which philosophers or "great thinkers" are influences in your life?

I've been thinking about my #phil5 and have come to the conclusion that I've always felt alienated by philosophy. Alongside poets and novelists, it's the natural world that teaches me about life. Socrates is welcome to his "men in the town": I'd much rather be in the woods! ? @jdtchicago

Cathythoughts I agree 💫nature is the one. I also wanted to add myself as one of my best teachers , because ultimately we must trust ourselves. Bravo ! I love your answer ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️👍 7y
GoneFishing What about Thoreau or Emerson? Also, you might like this book.... 7y
quietlycuriouskate @jdtchicago Ah, yes, you make a fair point with Thoreau. I've not read Emerson (will look him up). The book you tagged looks interesting, too. 7y

LectricSheep This book looks awesome! I've been looking for a reference for North American/east coast trees for a while, but all the books I've seen are handbooks, so they're way less comprehensive with smaller and fewer drawings than the one in your photo. Do you know of a similar book for my region? 🤤 7y
quietlycuriouskate @LectricSheep I wish I could suggest something but am coming up with nothing. Sorry. I've had most of these books since I was a kid. 7y
LectricSheep Thanks for trying! 😀 7y

Cathythoughts @Cinfhen 🙏😊😊 7y
quietlycuriouskate "I have heard the mermaids singing, each to each." Synchronicity! I was reading Prufrock with my lunch today. (No peaches, though.) 7y
Cathythoughts @River_Voice I have seen them riding seaward on the waves...........We have lingered in the chambers of the sea By sea-girls wreathed with seaweed red & brown Till human voices wake us & we drown. 💫 7y
quietlycuriouskate That, right there, is exactly what I love about Litsy: when have I *ever* traded T S Eliot quotes before? 💚 7y
glo1 I adore Prufrock. I named my Kindle "mermaids singing each to each"! 7y
Cathythoughts @glo1 what a great idea 💫💫💫 7y

Thanks for the tag @JoeStalksBeck Here's who I look to for philosophical guidance:
my #phil5
1. Maimonides ~ Jewish scholar, philosopher & all around brilliant
2. Confucius ~ He has a way of simplifying everything
3. Hannah Arendt ~ for being a fighter & a survivor
4.Socrates ~ because Socrates
5. Ellen Degeneres ~ Her motto "Just Be Kind to One Another" is pretty solid advice ?

Anyone else feel like sharing...consider yourself tagged!

JoeStalksBeck Love these ! I love Hannah Ardent!! 7y
emilyhaldi ❤️ Ellen!! I'm content taking all of my philosophical guidance from her 😂 7y

#5philosophies that changed me. 1) Nietzsche: the willpower to overcome sorrow. To always be becoming who you want to be. 2) Sartre: to not be afraid of your freedom and to accept responsibility for your actions knowing you always have a choice. 3) Plato: I love everything . Meno is my favorite though. 4) Buddha: nothing exists 5) Heidegger:like Sartre expresses existentialism through freedom and responsibility of choices. Who are your favorites?

zezeki Sarte and Nietzche are one of my favourites too 😀😀 7y

Thanks @jdtchicago for tagging me for #phil5. #icantread about philosophy without rolling my eyes about how dead, white & male it is. Here are some who may not be credited as philosophers because elitism, but who conceptualised different modes of thinking about class, gender, race, colonialism, sexuality, and caste & who influenced me: Karl Marx, Simone de Beauvoir, Frantz Fanon, Judith Butler, B. R. Ambedkar

#SeptemBowie @Marchpane @Cinfhen

Cinfhen Nice 👍🏻😍 7y
merelybookish They count in English departments. 😁 But maybe not in philosophy departments? 7y
batsy @merelybookish Yeah, true! There's a weird split. I have some pent up issues with philosophy departments based on my uni experience 😬 7y

TheKidUpstairs @batsy I only lasted a couple of days in my first year philosophy class in Uni. The assigned readings intrigued me, but my god was the prof awful. 7y
batsy @TheKidUpstairs I had the same experience with profs. One in particular made fun of Asian languages, names, and told me he was surprised I did well considering how philosophy is not an "Asian thing". Of course he was a tenured professor... ? 7y
merelybookish @batsy OMG that's horrible! What an ass. I do think philosophy is more conservative than some of the other disciplines. And attracts some egomaniacs. I had a friend in grad school who took a philosophy class and was the only student in the class not named John. (It was a small class, but still...) 7y
batsy @merelybookish 😂😂 In my year there was one class filled with Andrews. 7y
merelybookish @batsy Clearly some very diverse classes.🙄🤣 7y
Centique @batsy I can‘t believe that awful professor you had! 😡😡😡 7y
Pruzy Simone de Beauvoir is better than Sartre! 7y
batsy @Pruzy I've a soft spot for him as my intro to existentialism, also his support for Fanon. But otherwise, yes, I think so too 😉 7y
RohitSawant Terrific picks! And that's awful about the prof you mentioned. Just wow. He probably believes in phrenology, too... 7y
batsy @rohit-sawant Thank you! And yes, it's entirely possible he does 😡 7y

I had to think on this one a bit, but I finally came up with my #phil5 choices. ?

1. Aristotle
2. Sun Zhu
3. Confucius
4. Immanuel Kant
5. Søren Kierkegaard

?If you‘re game for sharing whose philosophies you live your life by and you haven‘t been tagged already to do so then I tag @JoeStalksBeck @Samwise_Gamgee @DarcysMom @Silent_Whispers @GinEyre22 @rohit-sawant @JenP @MinDea @Izai.Amorim @speljamr @gossamerchild ?

JoeStalksBeck Love this! 7y
JoeStalksBeck I love all these philosophers! Kant , man that guy can take philosophy so deep you can't even think. It's like you have to be in a deprivation tank to get that deep inside your own mind 7y
readinginthedark 👏🏻Great choices! 7y

JoeStalksBeck Hey would you like to do a philosophy buddy read? Like get a some Littens and read one and discuss it? 7y
monkeygirlsmama @JoeStalksBeck Depends on what you choose. I gotta be honest, if it‘s too deep it might seem too much like work. LoL 7y
GoneFishing @JoeStalksBeck @monkeygirlsmama interesting idea about a philosophy buddy read. I‘m intrigued. 7y
