“For the soul walks upon all paths. The soul walks not upon a line, neither does it grow like a reef. The soul unfolds itself, like a lotus of countless petals.”

What a stunning little book! Thank you, Gibran for this beautiful book— the words stirring feelings of vulnerability in me. I really enjoyed the passages on Joy and Sorrow, Pain, and Beauty.

This was my #doublespin pick for April!

"The timeless in you is aware of life's timelessness. And knows that yesterday is but today's memory and tomorrow is today's dream." #OnThisDay in 1883, Kahlil Gibran was born in Bsharri, Lebanon. His best known work, The Prophet, is one of the best- selling books of all time, has been translated into more than 100 languages, and has never been out of print. #HistoryGetsLIT

“You work so that you may keep pace with the earth and the soul of the earth. For to be idle is to become a stranger unto the seasons, and to step out of life‘s procession that marches in majesty and proud submission towards the infinite.”

Absolutely obsessed with this little book!! I see why it is a classic. The passage on death is particularly moving.

Bookwomble I love the passage on parents and children, too 💗 3y

This little book includes The Prophet, for which Gibran is most famous, as well as extracts from two other works.

I thought it might be a bit deeply philosophical for me but I liked The Prophet, the others not so much.

Short, sweet, and full of poetic prose that speaks about the human experience. Religion is referenced, but even those who aren't believers can still find tons of value in Gibran's work. Hard to believe 96 pages took me 4 days but these are hard times 😅😓 hope you're all doing well!

Nute I still think of this as one of my most treasured reading experiences and it‘s been many moons! 4y
dainarmb I'm definitely grateful it was passed down to me and available on my shelves, I'm not sure I would have picked it up otherwise and I'm so very glad that I did! 4y

I read this as part of my #doublespin as well as #booked2020 #bannedbook - as the bookseller that sold it to me cautioned that it is a banned book in my country.
I loved the poetry - the words just washed over me as it talked about philosophies about love, marriage, life etc. Not in great detail - but perhaps enough to prompt some thought.

#PoetryMatters - Knowledge: I should liked to have spent time in the company of Kahlil Gibran. There is a beauty and tranquility exuded from his words. If he was true in nature and like the uttering of his soul then surely I would have enjoyed sitting someplace with him conversing in quietude.

Yup. That time in the evening. Makeup off, headlamp on, and taking a break from the gore of Stephen King to revisit the beauty of Kahlil Gibran, who's always been one of my favorites. 🤓📖💡💋

Anyone else use headlamps instead of the traditional book light? They're not a sexy look for the boudoir, but they're much more efficient. 🤷🏽‍♀️

If nerdy is the new sexy, is dweeb the new nerd? 🤣🤣

You have been told that, even like a chain, you are as weak as your weakest link.
This is but half the truth.
You are also as strong as your strongest link.
To measure you by your smallest deed is to reckon the power of the ocean
by the frailty of its foam.
To judge you by your failures is to cast blame upon the seasons for their inconstancy.

I‘ve mentioned before that I tried listening to an audiobook only once in my life so I decided to try again. I downloaded the tagged on Libby for my flight. Not into it. Despite being stuck in one place for 3 hours with no other entertainment and listening to one of my favourite books, I couldn‘t focus on it. I just get too distracted for audiobooks, which is weird because I like podcasts.

mcctrish I have struggled with audio books as well. I keep thinking I will find the ‘magic‘ one that works for me 6y
CouronneDhiver I don‘t always do a great job with audiobooks either... to each her own 😊 6y
VeganCleopatra But you're ok with podcasts? That does seem strange. 🤔 6y
See All 7 Comments
teebe @mcctrish Good luck! I‘m going to try a few more but I think the only way they‘d be useful to me is if I follow along with a book. I need the visual element. 6y
teebe @VeganCleopatra yeah, there‘s definitely times I have to re-listen to podcasts to fully absorb the info but for the most part, I can focus on them fine even while multitasking. Something about audiobooks makes them easy to tune out 🤷🏻‍♀️ 6y
teebe @CouronneDhiver yeah I don‘t think they‘re for me, I need something with a visual element. 6y
VeganCleopatra Maybe because ABs usually only have one reader? Or podcasts are shorter and often have more chatter? 🤷‍♀️ 6y

One Tree Hill brought me here. I love that show, I'm still obsessed! Lucas Scott (the protagonist) quoted Gibran on an episode, saying : "For reason, ruling alone is a force confining and passion unattended is a flame that burns to its own destruction." Years later I'm at a friend's house, The Prophet's sitting on her shelf and I found those words again, and many many more. Profound, beautiful and haunting; I wish I was I just being generous.

"For how can a tyrant rule the free and the proud, but for a tyranny in their own freedom and a shame in their own pride?"

"There are those among you who seek the talkative through fear of being alone. The silence of aloneness reveals to their eyes their naked selves and they would escape. And then there are those who talk, and without knowledge or forethought reveal a truth which they themselves do not understand. And then there are those who have the truth within them, but they tell it not in words. "

quote

"You talk when you cease to be at peace with your thoughts. And when you can no longer dwell in the solitude of your heart you live in your lips, and sound is diversion and a pastime.
