I've been meaning to read a lot more philosophy, + a lot more nonfiction in general, but after reading Spillover at the start of the pandemic last year the muchness of life became too much & I retreated to fiction. Though not all of the fictional books I've picked have been consoling 😂 Anyway, this was a great overview of key philosophical thoughts & systems laid out in a comprehensive & engaging manner. Very thinky & conducive to contemplation.

I have this as an ebook, but I feel like it will be so much more helpful as a physical book. I‘m going to read it along side Sophie‘s World to get a stronger/deeper understanding of each of the philosophers presented. This also brings in eastern philosophy, where Sofie‘s World doesn‘t. We shall see how it all works out. 🤞🏻🤞🏻🤞🏻

Pythagoras is probably my favourite ancient philosopher. He was a bit of a nut, but he did like how math is in everything, so he put it into his philosophy.

GingerAntics @Crazeedi and to think he discovered this (and oddly thought it was divine intervention) in about 500BCE, and now we are finding this is entirely true. It‘s amazing, really. 6y

Crazeedi @GingerAntics yes, observation has discovered many things. And maybe there was some divine intervention. I read an article once about the symmetry of everything from the macro to the micro. I remember the author talking about things like spider webs, and leaves etc. It sent shivers through me when I really thought about it 6y

Too bad we‘ve stopped teaching people to think independently (even though factory work hasn‘t been the standard work place of the masses for generations), or America might actually be having a philosophical revolution right now as opposed to tearing apart at the seams.

This book gives a great overview of philosophy. I was a philosophy major in college and this book covers many of the ideas I learned at school. However, my only grievance is that it leaves some ideas out like Kantian ethics. But other than that I highly recommend this to people who like philosophy or want to learn more about it.
