And the Land Lay Still | James Robertson

Pickpick

This is my book of the year as I finish my lunch overwhelmed by the final pages.Taking in 60 yrs of Scottish history from 1950 to 2010, the book tracks a series of characters who all interconnect. Dealing with political changes it has at its centre a man back from the war in Japan who leaves his family to live on the road. His image is captured by a photographer, in 2010 the son stages an exhibition of his father's work. Tender + tough at times 5*

Jaykristoff Your note stopped me cold-what a journey. Sixty years, one image, generations stitched through memory and movement. Tender and tough is exactly it. Adding this to the top of my reading list. Thanks for the nudge. 1mo

Who, really, is the woman behind the man Macbeth who would be king?

A lovely retelling of one of my favorite Shakespearean that really gets into who Queen Macbeth was. Unfortunately for it, it also didn‘t do what I wanted. I had gone in expecting a tale of an ambitious, manipulative queen, & instead got a story of really good, beloved King Macbeth who united Scotland, accepted all. I might like this better on a reread.🌕🌕🌕🌗🌑

So I Am Glad: A Novel | A. L. Kennedy

A very blue library haul. I cannot for the life of me remember who or what had me request the tagged book! But I guess we will see how it goes.

Everyone seems to hate Extinction of Irena Rey so I thought I would give it a try 😂 I feel I enjoyed her last book more than others and I love to be a contrarian

I read about Vanishing Treasures in my research for possible Women's Prize nonfiction books. Not sure if essays count there

squirrelbrain Yes, I saw Vanishing Treasures on a WP list too. 9mo
Ruthiella I‘m also often curious about books that elicit such strong reactions! 😅 9mo
ChaoticMissAdventures @squirrelbrain I am curious if it qualifies, but then the rules for NF are hard to pin down (I feel) I don't see anything against essay collections. 9mo
ChaoticMissAdventures @Ruthiella I need to know what all the fuss is!! I often read these much hated and sort of shrug they are usually "not that bad" to me. 9mo

Brooklyn botanic garden does a Lightscape winter walk at night for a couple months every year. I love going and getting some hot chocolate (with baileys!) and wandering the exhibits.

I‘m a member and like doing walks around there any season tbh, it‘s so close to my apartment.

This is a short, modern retelling of Macbeth from the point of view of Lady Macbeth or Gruoch. I loved Grouch‘s relationships with her women; they are her heart and strength as much as Macbeth. Queen Macbeth is the 5th in the Darkland Tales series in which various Scottish writers reimagine events from Scotland‘s past in new ways.

Just sitting back and starting this one. The MC ( or what I think might be the main c ) is a serious over-thinker… interesting psychological profile 🤞🏻set in France , Saint-Louis. Someone is going to disappear from mc‘s local restaurant .. I think I could love this.

Tamra I am anxious to find out whether you end liking it. If so, I‘ll stack! 11mo

I definitely recommend revisiting Shakespeare‘s Macbeth before reading this novella or at least have a good understanding of it. McDermid‘s retelling is short but does not lack substance. I love when we get a more fleshed out character (particularly the women) in a retelling of a classic. Added bonus here for the more historically accurate story as well.
