Stonehenge: A Novel | Bernard Cornwell
Mehso-so

This was my first of Bernard Cornwell. It wasn't the greatest book, so I'm told, so I'll look for some others of his to enjoy. I was expecting more historical fiction rather than fantasy, and it took a while to really get into it because of all the dealings in war & with the gods. It, overall, was good but kind of so-so. I'll donate this to my little free library.

While the 7th book in the series has just as much to love as previous installments, there are some consistent problems that are starting to get to me. First, too much is crammed into one book. I‘d prefer something shorter with less going on (maybe Wayward Children-style). Secondly, & most frustratingly, Taylor seems to struggle to embrace body positivity. Bigger bodies are beautiful, too. The repeated fat-shaming is becoming hard to overlook.👇🏻

monalyisha 1/1: Still, the cast of characters is one of my favorite groups of *any* series. I can‘t bring myself to give any of these novels a so-so rating…especially not one that features King Arthur‘s sword, Stonehenge, and The Wild Hunt. A lot hinges on Book 8. 4mo
julesG I didn't have the impression it's fat-shaming. In most cases Max talks about herself, or repeats that the medical section thinks she should lose some weight for health reasons (bum knee, ankles,...). 4mo
monalyisha @julesG There‘s also the whole first bit about Caroline of Brunswick. 4mo
julesG Oh. Yes. I had forgotten about that part. You're right. That could have been done better. Especially from the POV of future historians. The contemporaries are allowed to be unkind, they don't know better. (I hope you understand what I mean) 4mo

I've read enough of these and the shorter stories now to feel a sense of camaraderie with the core group of characters. This installment was full of the fun OTT antics I've come to expect from St. Mary's.

Bookwormjillk Oops I must have been a chapter ahead. I finished today. 12mo
BarkingMadRead @Bookwormjillk that‘s ok, it was only one extra chapter, I‘m betting a lot of people will finish today! 12mo

Cuilin @Bookwormjillk yep I finished it too. 12mo
Cuilin I loved these chapters as they ran and hid together. They fact the novel begins with a pagan tradition of the May dance and towards the end at Stonehenge is interesting with all the Victorian morals throughout the book which was so damaging for Tess, I found interesting. (edited) 12mo
Clare-Dragonfly Oh my goodness, Angel ran into a big rock and I go, “it‘s Stonehenge!” I did not expect to be right 😂 12mo
Clare-Dragonfly I don‘t love that Tess‘s stated motivation for killing Alec is “maybe Angel will love me now.” How about “he‘s a horrible, asshole rapist who deserves it,” Tess?! 12mo
BarkingMadRead @Clare-Dragonfly 🤣🤣🤣 and also, yes! 12mo
currentlyreadinginCO The only time that Tess gets to enjoy a little happiness with the man she loves with all of her secrets laid bare ... andddd she's running from the law & living in delusion. Perfect! I did like these chapters, though. The image of Tess getting apprehended at Stonehenge has stayed with me since I read this in high school! Made myself safe the one-pager for tomorrow 🤓 12mo
Bklover @Clare-Dragonfly You‘re right about her motivation. I‘d like to see her get really pissed off just once. 12mo
dabbe It's interesting to me how many crucial scene take place “offstage“ as it were, like the rape scene, the killing scene ... even the 5 days of bliss only gets like two brief paragraphs. Hardy leaves us with a lot of imagining on our own. I like that I'm left to fill in the gaps; he truly respects his readers and wants them to visualize--maybe because we'll make it even more epic ourselves. This book will stay with me a long time. 💜 12mo

If you haven't read this author yet...you need to add him to your list. He seamlessly blends true historic events and his own world building and characters to give you a beautiful saga like read. Not unlike Michner. This is a #chunkster but don't let it intimidate you. Highly recommend this author.

vlwelser Upvoting. I love this author. 1y
