My arms are getting the hardest of work-outs: Holding a big book over your head 💪

But with weather like this, I just can't stay inside 🌞

hlgreenfield Oh wow you've made tons of progress on the book! You are inspiring me with a desire to give moby dick another chance! 8y
Kalalalatja @hlgreenfield the last 100 pages have been a bit more action-focused, which have helped a lot! It will never be one of my favourite books, but I am kinda glad that I stuck with it! 8y
hlgreenfield I hope one day I can say the same. I tried it once quite a few years ago, but I gave up the first time it started talking in a LOT of detail about whaling 😂 8y

Kalalalatja @hlgreenfield I will confess, I skipped a lot of the pages about whaling. To me, they didn't feel like a part of the story, and it felt more like Melville just wanted to show how much he knew about whaling. So that might make it easier if you try it again 😉 8y
underthebelljar I've heard that chapter about whales makes a lot of people bail. That would be a good chapter to skim read 😂 8y
Nat_Reads This is my favorite (one of) book. I'm so glad you read it ❤️🖤👏 8y
Kalalalatja @BookishJess I certainly did! 😂 8y
Kalalalatja @Nat_Reads I am glad I read it too, but I am also glad that it is over now 😄 8y
maich I love reading outside👍❤ Nice picture. 8y

I am about halfway with #tacklingthebeast, which is only because I have had so much uninterrupted reading time the last four days. Sometimes the story's pace picks up, but then there comes 3 chapters in a row that reads like non-fiction about boats or pictures of whales.. 🐳 the biggest trouble with reading this is that it makes me so damn sleepy. I feel like taking a nap every time I pick it up 😴😂

MayJasper 😁 there are certain books that do that! 8y
JuliaTheBookNerd I gave up a little over half way through, it would be a good story if all the how to whaling stuff was cut out 🙁I couldn't plow through that for another half 🌊🐳 8y
hlgreenfield Wow that's a lot of progress! They story does seem interesting, but I just can't see myself reading hundreds of pages about whaling! 8y

JazzFeathers A friend of mine read it on Serial Reader. She said taking it in small doses helped 😉 8y
Kalalalatja @Mayjasper and this is definitely one of them! @JuliaTheBookNerd I am pretty stubborn, so I plan on persevering, but I might skip the how to chapters 😉 @hlgreenfield it is interesting, but the story just drowns in all the uninteresting stuff... @JazzFeathers I could imagine. I can't manage more than a few chapters at a time (and they are really short), so I take a lot of breaks too 😉 8y
bedandabook My goodness, it'll be an achievement to finish it. You've done well to get this far. 8y
Kalalalatja @bedandabook thanks 👍 8y

Sometimes my brain works in #mysteriousways. I have finally begun #tacklingthebeast, but when I saw that the first 40+ pages were "only" introduction and the like, and that the last 100 pages were mostly notes, I was so sure, that this would make it easier for me to read. But then I started reading - sooooo sloooow....

jpmcwisemorgan I've never read this and every time I think I might, I see a post like this that makes me rethink it - you're a much braver person than I. 8y
Kalalalatja @jpmcwisemorgan tbh, I don't feel very brave right now. I just had to go buy some candy to motivate me to read a bit further 😳 8y
tricours It's sitting here waiting for me as well! 8y

DGRachel Not to discourage you, as there are people that truly love this novel, but it took me an entire summer to slog through. So painful. I bitched to everyone I knew that whole summer. 😂 (edited) 8y
Kalalalatja @DGRachel don't worry, I have heard both the good and the bad about this, and I am prepared to spend quite a while on it. I don't really bail on books, and I am determined to get through it, whether I love it or not 😄 8y
jpmcwisemorgan Oh, candy can help anything. Or tacos. Tacos work too. 8y
Cinfhen Credit to you..not a book I would choose to tackle...brave girl! 8y
Kalalalatja @jpmcwisemorgan oooo, now I really want tacos! 🌮🌮 8y
Kalalalatja @Cinfhen I was finally in a place where I wanted to read it, so hopefully it will keep moving me forward 🤞 8y
hlgreenfield I plan on tackling this, but I keep pushing that task to future me. But then I did that with war and peace and ended up reading it in 5 days and becoming one of my all time favourites so maybe Moby won't be that bad! 8y
Kalalalatja @hlgreenfield I got a love/hate thing going with it at the moment. Some chapters are funny and interesting, but then some of them, I really have to struggle through. It is a weird read for me for sure. And I won't be done in 5 days, unless some kind of miracle happens 😄 8y
