The Light Between Oceans
The Light Between Oceans | M. L. Stedman
AFTER FOUR HARROWING YEARS ON THE WESTERN Front, Tom Sherbourne returns to Australia and takes a job as the lighthouse keeper on Janus Rock, nearly half a days journey from the coast. To this isolated island, where the supply boat comes once a season, Tom brings a young, bold, and loving wife, Isabel. Years later, after two miscarriages and one stillbirth, the grieving Isabel hears a babys cries on the wind. A boat has washed up onshore carrying a dead man and a living baby. Tom, who keeps meticulous records and whose moral principles have withstood a horrific war, wants to report the man and infant immediately. But Isabel insists the baby is a gift from God, and against Toms judgment, they claim her as their own and name her Lucy. When she is two, Tom and Isabel return to the mainland and are reminded that there are other people in the world. Their choice has devastated one of them.

I‘m posting this in response to @ljuliel ‘s Challenge to #LetsKeepLitsyActive by posting a book that moved us emotionally.

Could post many but The Light Between Oceans challenged my moral compass and made me cry long ugly tears! 😢😭😢😭😢😭😢😭😢 Such a great book and stayed with me. ❣️😍

What book moved you emotionally? Amy emotions. #BooksMoveUsEmotionally

TheBookHippie I‘ve thrown a few books in my day as all #BOTMBUDDYREADERS know. However Girl in Pieces had me sobbing in recognising myself as a teen and all the teens I mentor now and in the past 1mo

TheAromaofBooks Gah, this book got me, too! I thought the author did a really amazing job making Isabelle a sympathetic character even when I disagreed with her. I cried buckets over this one. 1mo

I‘m resurrecting my book bowl (I didn‘t have a jar) in an effort to help me focus on books I own. I love and use the library so much that I neglect the books I have on my shelves to read. I also have a hard time picking books from my own shelves so the book bowl will help.

bookful I do the same thing!👏👏 @Bookzombie 1mo
Karkar Do you ever pick one out and say nope, then you pick another one and another one? I feel like this could be an issue for me. Lol 😂 I am so bad at sticking to something like this. 1mo
Bookzombie @Karkar Yes, I have and will probably again. Lol. It‘s definitely not a fool proof plan. 🙂I also have had my husband pick it. 1mo

marleed library books are like dipping into someone else‘s cookie jar! Since book fitness challenge round 2, I started a commitment that‘s worked well. For every 2 Library books I must read one book off my shelf. It‘s actually kind of fun now. 1mo
Bookzombie That‘s a good commitment. I might have to do something similar. 1mo
bookful I stick to the ones I pick, I pick 7 out a cup and then see which ones i want to read out the 7, I dont throw it back in and I get excited if the ones I pick I want to read , I have books I bought I need to read those before any more purchases lol @Bookzombie 1mo
readordierachel I like that idea @marleed ! 1mo
Eyelit Same!!! I need to give my library a rest for a bit and focus on my own books. The jar idea is a good one! 1mo

This book has been such a wild ride. Although it was slow up until about page 140, you'll understand why it needed to build up the emotion to continue on. I just finished this book and I'm sitting here feeling satisfied by the ending and also sobbing. If you're going to read this, at least see it to the end. Such a powerful story and I'm beyond impressed by the authors wit and twists created throughout. PICK! 😍👏

This book about a couple that chose to keep a baby who was shipwrecked and claim it as their own, and the subsequent consequences caused by that decision was emotionally heart-wrenching. It made me cry, smile, and reflect on my own children and what I would do or how I would react in a similar situation. Reading this book was one of the few times that I wasn‘t sure what the “happy ending” would or should be.

A beautifully written story set in Australia. Lucy-Grace was my favorite character, and the one I felt for the most. The adults in this novel drove me crazy with their poor decisions. I lost count how many times I was SMH. Why did Izzy and Tom never consider adoption?

For bookgroup. I can see why this is popular: strong characters, emotion, a moral dilemma. And it follows the formula of making the characters want something, preventing them having it and seeing how they respond. I enjoyed it until I lost interest towards the end when the emotion turned to outright flailing. Most days I'd lean towards a so-so (don't like blatant attempts at plucking my heartstrings) but it was a good holiday read so it's a pick.

squirrelbrain I have this on my TBR shelf still... great review! 5mo

52 week reading challenge: Recommendation from a friend (9)

There is a lot of depth packed between the pages of this extraordinary book. Some of the issues it deals with are war and its effects, trauma in various forms, searing loss, overwhelming grief, moral choices, the poison of prejudice, and harmful religious beliefs.

She knew that if a wife lost a husband, there was a whole new word to describe who she was: she was now a widow. A husband became a widower. But if a parent lost a child, there was no special label for their grief. They were still just mother or father, even if they no longer had a son or daughter. That seemed odd. 😭

I'm trying to get my book buying under control this year. Last month I only spent $15 (on 6 books), but that's probably more to do with the shutdown than any willpower on my part. So, today I headed to the FOTL book sale - they have these every month - and I picked up these 3 (spending $2.50). I don't know if I should feel good or bad about buying (only) 9 books in 32 days. 🤔

“The cruelest joke was on the fellows everyone called ‘lucky‘ because they got to come back at all: back to the kids spruced up for the welcome home, to the dog with a ribbon tied to his collar so he could join in on the fun. The dog was usually the first to spot that something was up. Not just that the bloke was missing an eye or a leg; more that he was missing generally - still missing in action, though his body had never been lost sight of.”

Tom and Isabel, isolated from the Australian mainland due to his job as a lighthouse keeper, have been trying for years to have a child. One day a boat washes up on their island carrying a dead man--and a baby. Isabel sees the baby's arrival as fate. Tom thinks they should report it to the police. But he caves, and they pretend to the world that the baby is theirs. All goes well for a time. Until it doesn't. This book is awash in moral dilemmas.
