I nearly sobbed at times listening to this one, as Sadie navigates life with a condition that begins suddenly. It‘s sweet, reflective, humorous, with some dashes of romance. I loved listening to Sadie‘s growth and her journey to acceptance in a variety of things in her life.

While I enjoyed The Bodyguard just a smidge more, I absolutely loved this one. So good! #52BookClub23 #TitleStartingWithTheLetterH

squirrelbrain I haven‘t read anything by this author… definitely sounds like one to try! 1y
Librarybelle @Clwojick @robinb @Read4life @Cinfhen I may have to read her backlist. I think I have one or two BOTM selections by her, so that will be a start! 1y
Librarybelle @squirrelbrain This one was a fun one, with also serious bits thrown in. Definitely worth a try! 1y
robinb So far I‘ve read 7 from her backlist…loved them all (some more than others). My very favorite was the first one I read from her below. BTW, two of her novels have been made into Netflix movies: The Lost Husband and Happiness for Beginners. 1y
Librarybelle @robinb Good to know!! Thank you! 1y

From the reviews I knew this was going to be a tough read, but it was VERY dark. Set in 1940s #trinidad, much of the story takes place in the ‘barrack‘; the remnants of slave housing, where the incredibly poor eke out their ‘lesser lives‘. Another storyline features the disappearance of a local reclusive landowner, but it‘s all inter-connected.

There‘s no light anywhere in this novel, hence why it‘s touted as a Booker nominee. It‘s one of ⬇️

squirrelbrain …those books that you hesitate to recommend because it‘s so tough but, weirdly, I grew to appreciate it. TW for animal abuse. @TrishB - there were even more dead dogs later on in the book. 😬 #netgalley Published next week in the UK. (edited) 2y
TrishB Great review Helen 👍🏻 I‘ve cancelled the pre order for now. 2y

JamieArc “There‘s no light anywhere in this novel, hence why it‘s touted as a Booker nominee.” 😆. Oh my. Why do I subject myself to such books? 2y

CarolynM Sounds like you've taken one for the team. Great review, but definitely not stacked😆 2y
Hooked_on_books I tend toward darker books, so I‘m glad you mentioned the dead dogs. No way! 2y
Cinfhen I had this one stacked but I feel like im gonna hold off - I can‘t do REALLY DARK right now or animal cruelty 2y
azulaco I have this one on my possibles list for #readingtheamericas2023 as well. We‘ll see if I feel like reading it when I get to #trinidad. 2y

While I felt the weight of the story dragged at times, I was highly invested in all the characters. Tales of witchcraft, the Underground Railroad, and forbidden love woven seamlessly. I fully admire Isobel‘s backbone and grit! There were a few surprising twists, and I rather enjoyed the ending.
