Mom & Me & Mom | Maya Angelou
post image
Pickpick

Maya Angelou never fails. This memoir recounts the sometimes complicated but loving relationship she had with her mother, who she reunited with as a young woman after being raised by her grandmother. Angelou is a beautiful, honest storyteller that brings out humanity in herself and everyone else with the touch of her pen. It's a love letter to mothers and daughters and siblings, and lessons imparted to her about gender, race, class, and aging. 🌷

Loretta I've set myself a goal of finishing the main 6 volumes of her memoirs this year and next. ❤️💕 8y

"The bridge I must be
Is the bridge to my own power
I must translate
My own fears
Mediate
My own weakness

I must be the bridge to nowhere
But my true self
And then
I will be useful"

Beloved | Toni Morrison
post image

#BannedBooksWeek version of #WonderWomanWednesday, feat Toni Morrison! Morrison is one of the most decorated writers & a Nobel laureate, yet her books are frequently banned, citing violence & sexual content. Yet how do we get an accurate portrayal of the awful effects of slavery & race in the US w/o discussing violence? She confronts difficult racial & women's issues w/blunt, necessary observation & powerful prose. 🙌🏾

BookishFeminist Hi Android folks! If you're confused about #WonderWomanWednesday (or #WWW), it's a hashtag I made for us to share inspirational women on Litsy, like authors, activists, characters, whoever you'd like! It's like #WomanCrushWednesday or #WCW on other platforms but with an effort to be more inclusive. Feel free to use it, share your own, and tag me so I can see them! 8y

theshrinkette I love this! 8y
BookmarkTavern I'm a little ashamed to admit I've never read anything by Toni Morrison. What would you suggest as a starting point? 8y
InLibrisVeritas My mom had all of Toni's work, and I remember hearing about some of them being banned and read them. I'll admit she's not a favorite of mine, but she has a power to her words that is indescribable. 8y
BooksForYears All the yes for this post! 👏👏 8y
kristenlcoates @krysannethemums Hi! Jumping in to say that if you've never read #ToniMorrison, the best way I've found to introduce folks is to go in publication order. She has a distinct writing style and has evolved over the years, and most of her books do contain elements of magical realism. Reading them in the order she wrote them allows you to move with her as an authorial voice! So, I'd start with The Bluest Eye, published in 1970. 😊 8y
BookmarkTavern Thanks @kristenlcoates ! I just put a hold on it at the library. I'm really excited to read it. 8y
Notafraidofwords @kristenlcoates I totally agree! 8y
BookishFeminist @krysannethemums I was going to recommend the bluest eye as well so I agree with @kristenlcoates. It's also one of my faves of hers. Enjoy! 8y

Tuesday night relaxing with a good book and a tea latte. ?☕️

Finally jumping on this bandwagon. I need to read like the wind because it has to go back to the library soon! It had me sold at "retelling of 1001 Nights." I love me a good retelling. Plus I adore these covers. ??❤️

stacybmartin These books are beautiful! 😍 8y
BookishFeminist @erinreads Awesome! I keep hearing praise for it. It's been on my TBR forever but Litsy keeps talking about it so I have to jump on board. Can't resist some good ole fashioned peer pressure! 8y

BookishFeminist @stacybmartin They are! I love the covers. I'm guessing you mean the writing inside too? I'm slowly discovering that. 😍 8y
JustTrish Oh dear, my tbr pile is towering, but this looks scrumptious! 8y
stacybmartin @BookishFeminist actually, I haven't read them yet lol. I've bought them both and yet, there they sit on my TBR pile. I'm terrible, I know! 😬 8y
erinreads @BookishFeminist Hope you enjoy! The second one doesn't quite hold up to the greatness of the first one, but still a great series. 8y
BookishFeminist @JustTrish Sorry not sorry! 😉 I've heard nothing but great things about them. My TBR is unsaveable at this point 😂 8y
BookishFeminist @erinreads I've got them both out from the library so I'm hoping to get to it right after 😀😀 8y
