A dashing man of honor... En route to propose to his sensible acquaintance Lady Hester, Sir Gareth Ludlow finds young, pretty Amanda wandering unattended and knows it is his duty to bring her back to her family. This turns out to be a challenge as Amanda seems to possess an imagination as intriguing as it is dangerous. A shocking refusal... Lady Hester stuns both him and her family when she refuses him. At her age, no one would expect her to turn down such an eligible suitor. But Lady Hester has met the indomitable Amanda. How can the quiet, intelligent Hester hope to compete with such a lively young lady? Celebrate the 80th birthday of Regency Romance with great books from Sourcebooks Casablanca! WHAT READERS ARE SAYING: "Wonderful Heyer! You must read this one, really it's one of her best ... charming and funny." "Crisp, funny, and wonderful to read." "The best Regency-era romance novel ever written ... I had exactly the same reaction to Sprig Muslin that I had with Austen's Pride and Prejudice-an overwhelming sense of relief and satisfaction that it had ended in exactly the way I had wanted it to ... So excellently done and such fun!" "Hilarious. I recommend Georgette Heyer to anyone in need of a bit of cheering up."

This was a unique one! A determined young lady sets off on her own plan of campaign, but inexorably draws others into her whirlwind along the way. Midway through, I felt “Oh no - there is no way this can end well.” But of course Heyer brings it all to a satisfying end. Lady Hester was a surprise favorite, and Amanda was a trip 😆

1. Horror or fantasy, usually.
2. When I need a good comfort read, I grab one of Georgette Heyer‘s regency romances. I‘ve read them so many times that I don‘t have to devote a lot of brain cells to follow the story. Her delightfully sharp wit, masterly plot building, and beautifully silken prose are a perfect distraction!
3. Sprig Muslin, Venetia, A Civil Contract, and The Talisman Ring are my favorites, but they‘re ALL great!

Just off the mark with this one. It seemed to take an age to get going and the mature older couple/headstrong younger theme was just more fun in the Talisman Ring. A lady minute free space entry for #bookspin. @TheAromaofBooks

This was a delightful read. It helped me through many a sleepless night. The antics were ridiculous, but that just made it fun. Heyer‘s writing is actually good, IMHO, so her skill in description and storytelling kept it from feeling cheesy. I especially enjoyed the dynamics of the four main characters.

batsy I really enjoyed this one and should read more of her books; this seems like the right time 4y
saresmoore @batsy Good to know, thank you! They‘re the perfect palate cleanser for life right now. 4y

Woot! Finished my last read of 2018. I‘ll get my stats up soon.

This is an atypical romance, because there aren‘t even any kisses, and the heroine is offstage for a solid 100+ pages. But it‘s hilarious and so clever. #georgetteheyer #jesshowreads2018

Stayed home from church with a slightly sick kid. {She‘s not that bad, but her cough sounds gross, and I didn‘t want to be *that* parent.} 📚

So used the opportunity to roast up all the veggies we hadn‘t eaten this week. {Strangely, however, there are zero wilting cookies lurking. 🤔} 📚

Sitting down to a bowl full of veggies and an old friend. {😍} #georgetteheyer

On of my favorites! The hero, Sir Gareth, is still in love with his dead fiancée and decides to propose to a friend, Lady Hester because she seems nice enough. Lady Hester is not enthused, and tells him so. Then they get to know each other through some wonderful Heyer-style hijinks. #romantsy

I love Heyer, but I think I would have enjoyed this one more when I was younger. Most of the adventure and shenanigans happen to the young Amanda, but the love interest is our more mature Lady Hester. I'd have liked more of Hester's story - Amanda is very young.

However, the end of the book made me laugh out loud 😀

moranadatter I remember thinking the heroine was immature when I read this in my early 20s. It didn't stop me from enjoying the book though. 7y
moranadatter Oops! I meant the younger woman not the heroine. 7y
ScientistSam @moranadatter well, it's hard not to like Heyer, even when it's not my favorite Heyer😋 7y

This book is so incredibly hilarious, you guys! If you love Heyer and want to read a book where she is in top comedic form pick up this one! On his way to propose to a sensible friend Sir Gareth runs into a young lady that is clearly a runaway so there is nothing for it but to bring her along... Oh dear!

A study in contrasts.
On the left: books I took on holiday.
On the right: books I brought back from holiday.
Three are presents for other people, the rest are presents to myself!

Riveted_Reader_Melissa Looks like my trips. 7y
gibblr Same here! I usually end up mailing them to myself because it's easier. 7y
Ian Reminds me of my last trip! On the way to my trip my suitcase weighed 28 pounds. On the way back from my trip it was 51. The only difference was books. I was shocked, I'd been convinced I hadn't bought that much!!! 7y
Eyelit Accurate for me as well! 7y
