This one is proving to be a disappointing read. I mean I was expecting space pirates and Firefly vibes but it's just flat. I can't motivate myself to pick it back up!

LazyOwl That's a shame, I really enjoyed this one. I listened on audio 7y

I am obscenely excited to be reading another Guy Gavriel Kay book but also am simultaneously dreading the day I'll exhaust his backlist. #book #fantasy #historicalfiction

read_diverse_books It truly is! I have this one on my Christmas wish list. 😍 8y
KatieLovestoRead @read_diverse_books I've owned this since it came out but I'd reread Harry Potter too recently when I bought it. I can say though rereading the illustrated edition is a whole new experience and I'm picking up on things I hadn't noticed before! 8y

If you're looking for a historical fiction book set in Renaissance Europe with a touch of the fantastical Guy Gavriel Kay's got your back. This book is beyond beautiful in it writing, it's incredibly atmospheric and the setting itself really becomes a character. Perhaps not where is start with Kay (the Sarantine Mosiac Duology or Tigana are better start points) but if you've read his stuff and liked it, you'll love this!

Labyrinth Lost | Zoraida Cordova
Panpan

This is a ya novel about a teenage bruja who mistakenly send her family to the realm of Los Lagos in trying to get rid of her powers.

Unfortunately a disappointing books. It lacks complexity in plot line and features a lot of ya tropes like the reluctant chosen one and bad boy with a sad past trope. The world building is cool and the book is very atmospheric. The inclusion of diversity and Latin culture was great though. #ya #diversebook

This book is so much fun. Go into it knowing the mood is different from the first Mistborn trilogy and go in expecting slapstick comedy. This book is so different from the original trilogy but great in its own way.

I really enjoyed this one though perhaps not as much as a few others. It's a space opera about an inter-species space crew who dig wormholes in space and take on a difficult and dangerous contract. The way it approaches sexuality is so amazing! The observations about humanity are so insightful. However, I wanted a little more tension through out to make it perfect.

I want EVERYBODY to read this. It's a story you need to hear. It will move you, it will surprise you, it will frustrate you and it will inspire you. No matter your gender, ethnicity, race or creed, you need this in your life.

PS: the audiobook is wonderful

The writing in this book is glorious but for whatever reason, the plot really did nothing for me.

3.5/5*

A very different take on the genie idea. Lots of unique fantasy elements and a really interesting insight into Russian culture. A bit over dramatic at times and the writing was quite simplistic. All in all still worth picking up! #fantasy #sff

"For us, the places we went were home. We didn't care if they were good or evil or neutral or what. We cared about the fact that for the first time we didn't have to pretend to be something we weren't. We just got to be. That made all the difference in the world."

The whimsical, wonderful, dark and insightful novella I didn't know I needed in my life until I read it. Also how often do we get asexual protagonists? Not very often. #fantasy #LGBT
