I have been 100 pages into this book for 2 months and I can't bring myself to go back to it. Something about the writing! My brain can't take it! #OokBOokClub

julesG I can relate, I powered through because it's the last Discworld novel. 1y
khooliha @julesG I was hoping it would click with me in a way it didn't when I first read it, but no dice. 1y
julesG Shame! But they can't all be winners. Will you be doing the rest of the buddyread with us? 1y
khooliha @julesG I will for the last 2 books I own, his nonfiction collection and The Shepherd's Crown. I haven't read The Shepards's Crown before and I'm looking forward to doing it for the first time with everybody! 1y
julesG I'm also looking forward to Shepherd's Crown. It will be my first read, too. And then I'm looking forward to the biography to round up the whole book club. 1y

Steam engines have come to the Disc. At the same time, a small & vocal group of dwarves are committing terrorism & arson in the name of “Dwarves First.” Fortunately, chaos is where Moist von Lipwig thrives.

I love the Moist novels. Chaotic & thrilling, but also thoughtful commentaries. Here we watch a vocal group push against progress & change, because they are scared & angry. Loved the whole cast, loved the goblins, loved the ending. 🌕🌕🌕🌕🌗

jitteryjane724 Have you read much Pratchett? I'd be curious for the sequence you recommend going through Discworld. 1y
Vansa I love his Moist books.Theyre a beautiful alternate description of Victorian era technological developments. 1y

Vansa @jitteryjane724 I read Discworld in the chronological order of publication of books! They're hugely enjoyable either way. But for books with a particular set of characters, for instance, The Watch series, or the Witches, you have to read those in order. 1y
BookmarkTavern @jitteryjane724 I first read them in the order that my library had available copies! 😂 So no order at all, but I love sharing this flow chart for people interested in starting! https://goddamnshinyrock.tumblr.com/post/702487404966232064/goddamnshinyrock-god... 1y
jitteryjane724 @ozma.of.oz thanks for the flow chart! I'll probably use this to help decide, but I too am at the mercy of my library 😁 1y

Soubhiville I loved this. The cast of characters, as always, was great. I love that the engine was her own character in a way. The trolls are some of my favorite characters. And I‘m a big Moist fan. I‘m just sad that this is the last of the Discworld novels. I may reread the Tiffany Aching series later this year. Thanks for hosting the discussions @julesG ! 1y
julesG @Soubhiville 😘 I'm also sad this is the last Discworld novel. 😭 Moist has become a favourite of mine too. 1y

BookmarkTavern It always boggles my mind how timely his books remain, whether they were written ten years ago or forty. I absolutely loved the complete chaos that results from the steam engines. I loved more of the goblins. I‘ve always wondered if Pratchett had written more, would we have seen Vetinari molding Moist into the next patrician? 1y
julesG @ozma.of.oz Interesting question. Probably. It makes sense. But I always thought Vetinari was going to be patrician forever. 1y
khooliha @ozma.of.oz It feels very much like that was going to be Moist's path, but maybe in a way we wouldn't get to see. Don't know how Ankh-Morpork would handle a lighthearted Patrician! 1y

A whole lot of my favorite characters work together in this final Discworld novel. Moist, Vimes, Vetinari (who is on my bookmark 🥰), along with some new characters, help to usher in the age of the steam engine. Dwarven politics come into play again, with some twists I really loved.

It makes me really sad that this concludes my reread of the entire Discworld series. I think in 2023 I‘ll reread the Tiffany Aching series.

BoldCityBooks Did you reread all 42 of them this year? 1y
Soubhiville @BoldCityBooks no, I started my reread about 4 years ago. When these clothbound editions started being released I started collecting them, then decided to read the whole series in order. My previous readings were random order, whatever the library had. 1y
Ruthiella Awesome achievement! I only started reading these a couple of years ago. Only 39 more books to go! 😂 1y

I think this paragraph is a good example of the problem I am once again having with this book - I feel like it's constantly skipping over dialog or happenings with the narrative just saying "Moist did this." Why not just write this dialog?
#OokBOokClub

khooliha Turns out it's probably good that I started this book a month early - I really cannot take more than a couple pages of it at a time. 1y

I am trying to put my finger on what doesn't feel right about this (because it didn't feel right the first time and it doesn't feel right now) and: maybe it's the very long speeches people are giving uninterrupted?
(Moist also hasn't been in it much, for a Moist book, but that's more disappointing than anything.)

A joy. The best of the Discworld books leave you with hope about the future, and this one did. It reminds people that hate is corrosive to the individual and the group, that acceptance is something we should all strive to practice, that invention can be essential, life-saving, and change, necessary. I had a lot of fun with the train journey and flipping back frequently to the map at the front. 🚂

julesG Oh. Current #OokBOokClub read. I need to dig up my copy. 1y

As always with Pratchett, an adventurous tale that is actually an in-depth look at many issues — the challenges and dangers of progress and change, the instability of peace, and always, always the incredible power of the imagination, both singular and collective. I‘m not sure it all held together as seamlessly as some of his earlier work, but thoroughly enjoyable regardless. The Librarian recommends.

It hurts a little to rate a Pratchett only So-So, but I'd say this was the weakest of his books I read so far. Sure, it does have its good moments, especially with the dwarfs, but all in all it just ended up way to long. The story drags on, no real plot is in sight, and Terrys usual wit is totally missing. Actually, this was the first time I got bored reading a Discworld novel...

1.Moist is one of my favourite characters ever,I absolutely love how he always tries to do the right thing.Adorabelle Dearheart too.Genuinely badass
2.Lauren Olamina from Butler's Parable duology,so resourceful,brave and humane.
3.Psmith, from Wodehouse,totally hilarious.
4.Captain Vimes, for the humanity and sense of honour.
5.Gilbert from Small Island,he reminds me of my dad who's one of the nicest people I know.

AnkhMorpork enters the Railway Age.

Lots of cameo roles for people from previous books, making it a conscious swansong even if it wasn't actually the last book.

#audiobook Moist von Lipwig drags Discworld into the modern (steam) age by way of the railways. A fun installment of #Discworld, but this felt like it was trying to wrap up too many characters‘ storylines at once for me. I know it‘s one of the last of Pratchett‘s novels, but I‘m reading them all out of order. I‘ll probably appreciate more of the references when I‘ve read more of the books.

Today I got the last two of the Discworld series in this edition. I‘m hoping maybe they‘ll reprint the Tiffany Aching series in a matching edition, but there are already so many different releases of those, I‘m not sure they‘ll actually do it.

It couldn't pain me more to give the last Discworld novel before Sir Terry's death a so-so but I feel that some of his decline comes through. There are brilliant bits, angry bits and that essential moral core but the pacing is off and the plot feels loose and uncoordinated. There's plenty of Vetinari and I was thrilled to see Vimes but they weren't quite themselves. A bittersweet end to the "adult" Discworld. Just The Sorcerer's Crown to go ?

jillrhudy I felt the same about the last few. 😔 6y
Moray_Reads @jillrhudy the Moist books aren't my favourites though I enjoyed the first two well enough but I loved Thud! and Snuff so I really only felt it slipping significantly with this one 6y

Not a surprise that this is far from my favourite Discworld. I love most of STP's characters but his genial, heart in the right place capitalists don't appeal to me. Too much Vetinari as well - I love him but he should be used sparingly. He also seemed strangely ooc here. #read2017
