House Rules | Jodi Picoult
The astonishing novel from the #1 "New York Times "bestselling author Jodi Picoult about a young boy with autism falsely accused of murder. "When your son can't look you in the eye...does that mean he's guilty?" Jacob Hunt is a teen with Asperger's syndrome. He's hopeless at reading social cues or expressing himself well to others, though he is brilliant in many ways. But he has a special focus on one subject--forensic analysis. A police scanner in his room clues him in to crime scenes, and he's always showing up and telling the cops what to do. And he's usually right. But when Jacob's small hometown is rocked by a terrible murder, law enforcement comes to him. Jacob's behaviors are hallmark Asperger's, but they look a lot like guilt to the local police. Suddenly the Hunt family, who only want to fit in, are directly in the spotlight. For Jacob's mother, Emma, it's a brutal reminder of the intolerance and misunderstanding that always threaten her family. For his brother, Theo, it's another indication why nothing is normal because of Jacob. And over this small family, the soul-searing question looms: Did Jacob commit murder?

Jodi Picoult is a master at writing novels based around hot topics… Jacob, an 18 year old boy with Asperger‘s, looks incredibly guilty in the murder of his social skills tutor, but did he do it and how does he get a fair trial when our court system is stuck in the past. Complex, compassionate and incredibly thought provoking.

all_4_kb Ohhh this is another JP book sitting on my TBR shelf… I might read this next!! 😃😃😃 2y
Kshakal @kbibliophilific it had been on my shelf forever too and then I needed to read a book with a character who was autistic for a class and I am taking! 2y

I enjoyed this book. It pulled at my heartstrings. I rooted for them and I liked the way it ended. But I don‘t know. Something felt off. The main character had high functioning Asperger‘s (yes I know that‘s old terminology but the book is ten years old). Something about him didn‘t feel authentic to me. Maybe I don‘t have enough experience with this type of ASD but it didn‘t sit right with me. #autism #asd #autismawareness

Book 24
I listened to this courthouse murder mystery with an 18yo suspect with asperger's. The voice acting was annoying at times, but it was engaging and kept me guessing how it would end. The ending felt rushed after the length of the book and a little anticlimactic, but an enjoyable read. 3.5

Shame. I usually like Jodi Picoult books. But this one was too long, very repetitive, and predictable. The review on the back promised 'a strong whodunnit element' but it was obvious what happened and the avoidance of solving the crime felt manufactured and out of character. The voices in the story weren't differentiated enough and Jacob's in particular had a self awareness and analysis that didn't fit with his diagnosis of Asperger's.

This was a really good one by Jodi Picoult. She is so skilled at taking topics that we hear about and making them personal. This book gets into the mind of a by with Aspergers and his family and the people around him. I didn‘t put this one together in the end at all and was really impressed with the detail and the ethical questions that still have me thinking.

This is one of the lesser-known Jodi Picoult novels, however I enjoyed it immensely. I loved Jacob's character, and being immersed into the mind of someone with Asperger. I did read some reviews saying Picoult's description of Asperger was not accurate - I don't really know anyone who has the syndrome, so I can't say one way or the other. But the book was a beautiful, compelling read.

Ugh. This book. First of all, there‘s a huge anti-vaxxer message in it which just made me angry. Second, it was totally obvious what happened in the story from the first 50 pages or so.. and the characters just dance around it for 500 freaking pages. The story development here was just awful. Ended up skimming the last 1/3 because I couldn‘t do it anymore.

Burghbookaddict Gah.. I bought this audiobook during Audibles 4th of July sale. Idk if I can handle any anti vax garbage though 😖 6y
Cinfhen Im NOT a fan of Jodi P 😩 6y
MelissaSue81 @BurghBookAddict - it‘s not a huge portion of the story but they mention it more than once. I guess to be fair, I think the book was written before the Wakefield study was retracted... but...it put a bad taste in my mouth and the rest of the book did nothing to redeem it. 6y

MelissaSue81 @Cinfhen - I used to read her books constantly.. then they all started to seem the same, so I stopped. I recently read small great things, which had its plot flaws, but was overall a good read. And I got the ARC of her new one Spark of Light which I thought was REALLY good (and not so much the same as all her others). This (and a bunch of her others) has been on my shelf for years so I decided to give it a shot. Mistake. 6y

This story has the same dynamics with "My SIster's Keeper". It just had a different set of characters and a different "sickness" but "House Rules" is still a must-read. I liked it because I work with special needs children and can relate with the story. However, if you're expecting a really emotional book then it does not compare to "My Sister's Keeper".
