Small Great Things
Small Great Things | Jodi Picoult
Raised the daughter of a black maid in a privileged white household, Ruth Jefferson is no stranger to prejudice - though as a respected senior nurse, she feels a world away from the inequality that defined her mother's life. Kennedy McQuarrie is a lawyer who defends those who would otherwise be helpless, and would not consider herself a racist by any means. When a white supremacist accuses Ruth of a crime that leads to the death of his new-born baby, and costs Ruth her job, Kennedy knows it is the kind of case she became a lawyer to win. As the trial unfolds and the efforts to establish the truth about what happened in the hospital continue, all three - accused, accuser and defender - will be forced to confront much bigger truths: the truths they tell themselves about the world they live in, the values upon which they've raised their families and the beliefs around which they've lived their lives. Never afraid to confront the moral dilemma of our times in the most human terms, SMALL GREAT THINGS is Jodi Picoult at her thought-provoking, life-affirming best.

This book was challenging and timely (though I think this subject matter is always timely/relevant). It wasn‘t easy to listen to, but it was certainly worth it. Thought provoking and important. The narrators were very good.🎧

I don‘t know now to rate this book.I liked the writing and the story. I liked most of the characters. I admit that the author and I have different political views.I‘m not basing this statement solely on this book.My life experiences have taught me that some things work both ways. This doesn‘t mean that I don‘t believe that the things described in this book happen. All in all, this was a really good book that I am glad I read.

mrp27 I just don‘t get how people can‘t understand this very basic concept. 10mo
dabbe That's how it worked in the “old days“. If a parent did not want their child (I use “their“ now because you just never know) to read (for example CATCHER IN THE RYE), I would just find another acceptable novel from the same time period that the parent would approve. Now? Lordy be. 10mo
TieDyeDude Our local bible thumpers are trying to counter this by saying that "those" books don't belong in libraries, they don't want their tax dollars spent on them, and if parents want their kids to read them, they can buy them from a bookstore or online. The mental hoops they jump through to justify their posturing is amazing. 10mo

Characters were nicely fleshed out and it was easy to relate to them.

This wasn't an easy book to read but really interesting. This made me to ponder some things and that's always positive.

Sometimes I felt there was a bit unnecessary repetition: same scene from several POVs.

This was captivating read.

One day, you look in the mirror, and see gray hair. One day, you realize there is less of your life left than what you‘ve already lived. And you think, How did this happen so fast? It was only yesterday when I was having my first legal drink, when I was diapering him, when I was young.
When this realization hits, you start doing the math. How much time do I have left? How much can I fit into that small space?

this book consists of by far one of the greatest courtroom scenes. the story is excellently written, and learning about the inspiration and process from the author‘s note is so interesting. focusing on hate and love, this book highlights just how similar those strong feelings are. it takes you through so many emotions, highlighting the impact of passive racism, and the resolution is everything. a phenomenal read, truly!

Some times you read a book & you have to take a pause to think whether it was a plot twist, a character, a theme or that it was just such a good read. It was all those things, you are able to stand alongside each character share their experiences with a hand on your shoulder saying "No your experiences are not the same. No you don't really understand." I am still processing this book, my own white privilege & how I can strive to be better.

I just started this book, but it is about a African American labor and Delivery nurse that experiences racism and discrimination from some of her patients. I choose this book because I like realistic fiction, you wild like this book if your into realistic fiction.

Elizabeth.Spiess One theme in this book is perseverance, it is shown by the amount of hard work Ruth the main character has to go through being a single mom but also working as a dull time labor and delivery nurse. 2y
Elizabeth.Spiess The point of view of this story is third person omniscient. This point of view is established by the author by having each chapter being from the point of view of a different character and how different each character experienced the events that happened in the first chapter. The way this boom it written offers different perspectives on the events. 2y

While this book certainly had its flaws, I really enjoyed it overall. It definitely kept my attention, and I zoomed through it really quickly. If you're able to get past the fact that one of the main characters is a Black woman being written by a white woman (I know it's a sticking point for some), I think it's worth reading.
And it checked off another #Booked2021 prompt -- #COVIDheroes!

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ So for someone who isn‘t a big fan of this author, I had to read two of her books this month 😂 As my #sundaybuddyread friends know, I am not liking her latest book. But yes @TheBookHippie I found a Picoult book I can get behind. This was a very good story about the racial problems of our justice system and I couldn‘t agree more. The sections in the white supremacist‘s voice were very hard to read. I didn‘t like the end but 👍 overall

FelinesAndFelonies @mollyrotondo Are you struggling with The Book of Two Ways? I started it and put it aside. It just wasn't working for me. 3y
mollyrotondo @FelinesAndFelonies yes I am really struggling! We read a section a week for the buddy read and I can only handle a section a day at the end of the week because I keep putting it down every 20 pages or so. I don‘t like the main character at all. 3y

I selected this book with no idea of content as I read down my JP stack, but very nearly bailed after 15 minutes. I have no tolerance - none - for the opinions of a white suprematist. Before bailing, I saw my library made the audiobook available. The incredible Audra McDonald gives voice to the narration of Ruth Jefferson - it changed my whole experience.

JamieArc Oh I love Audra McDonald. Will have to put this on hold for the audiobook! Glad you added that tidbit. 4y
JamieArc Fun puzzle by the way! 4y
marleed @JamieArc - Yes, her voice on this story is excellent. Also, there‘s an author‘s note at the end with Jodi explaining why she wanted to tackle this subject. ...Oh my gosh, I put that 1000 piece Charlie Harper puzzle together this month - it was hard and it kept me up until 3 am one night which is unheard of for me! 4y
