Small Great Things
Small Great Things | Jodi Picoult
Raised the daughter of a black maid in a privileged white household, Ruth Jefferson is no stranger to prejudice - though as a respected senior nurse, she feels a world away from the inequality that defined her mother's life. Kennedy McQuarrie is a lawyer who defends those who would otherwise be helpless, and would not consider herself a racist by any means. When a white supremacist accuses Ruth of a crime that leads to the death of his new-born baby, and costs Ruth her job, Kennedy knows it is the kind of case she became a lawyer to win. As the trial unfolds and the efforts to establish the truth about what happened in the hospital continue, all three - accused, accuser and defender - will be forced to confront much bigger truths: the truths they tell themselves about the world they live in, the values upon which they've raised their families and the beliefs around which they've lived their lives. Never afraid to confront the moral dilemma of our times in the most human terms, SMALL GREAT THINGS is Jodi Picoult at her thought-provoking, life-affirming best.

I really liked this. Turk and Brit were so hateful! Kennedy provided a very interesting perspective as a white woman who never saw herself as racist, but through Ruth sees how many little things that white people take for granted that don‘t even bring a second thought, when it‘s so different if you are black. Picoult does have a note at the end where she does address her, as a white woman, writing from the point of view of Ruth, a black woman.

My son read and reccomended it to me. It amazes me how many try to deny white privilege exists. It can be tough to read in parts, but I'm so glad I got through it. I do love the authors notes at the end about her research and how she wanted to make sure it was a true representation of some of the issues of race. No one book can do it all, but this sure makes you think about our part in the world. I think I will be recommending this one a lot.

OMG!! Lucky Me!
Look what I just found at my girls circus class tonight!! I was tidying up some books left around the tables, getting ready to go and I see this tucked away behind some other books in the little community library they have there. The very book I'm currently reading!
I'm 2/3's of the way through the audio and ebooks on my phone so woo hoo, now I can read the physical copy!!
Super excited! Such a great book so far :)

Over the summer I was able to read anytime I wanted. With the school year starting and soccer season in full speed, my reading time unfortunately takes a hit. But I made a goal to take time away and read one book a month. I'm always telling everyone else to make sure they take time to breathe and take time to just relax. Here I am taking my own advice, for once. My Setpember Book. #selfcareisnotselfish #smallgreatthings #readingtime

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
This is one of the bravest books I have ever read. I can only imagine the balls it took to have written it.
Small Great Things discusses BIG TRAGIC THINGS that are day to day experiences for so any people. It does one of the most important things in paving a path to equity: forcing upon the isolated a realization of what happens outside our safe social economic bubble.

MUST READ!

Two very emotionally charged books about #Babies... A Spark of Light is my least favorite Jodi book. I think because of the way it was told backwards. Both deal with very powerful and controversial issues as always with Jodi‘s books!

The picture is the dressing gown that my mother and then my oldest daughter wore home from the hospital.. So that makes it 66 years old... 👶🏻 🍼

This book has me emotional. A black nurse is told by a white supremacist to not touch his newborn, but when she hesitates to give CPR and the baby dies, the parents accuse her of murder. I‘m only 1/3 of the way through because I need emotional breaks while reading this book!

So glad I picked up this book blind. It's been on the shelf for a bit and I just bought it on a whim. Wow did the story line smack me in the face. I'm only a few chapters in but I'm hooked. I've been called two racist words (my mom is Spanish) in my life and they have always stuck with me and I have never forgotten them or felt lower in my life. I really can't wait to see how this turns out.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ I‘m happy I read this but the POV of Turk was so disturbing that I struggled to pick it back up each time though I do think people should read more things that make them uncomfortable and consider their own situations and/or privileges more often. The trial had me on the edge of my seat, but starting at the verdict, I found the ending a little too neat and perfectly tied up for my taste but overall, a good read.

I‘m in the minority on this one because I did not love this book. It was ok but not great. I really feel like Jodi Picoult did her homework and very obviously wanted to open some eyes here but she threw all the stereotypes and cliches in there and banged us over the head with it. There was no nuance. I appreciate the effort but it was just a little too forced for me.

This needs to be required reading in every high school in America. I absolutely loved this book. This year, I have made a conscious effort to examine my own racial biases and work on changing them. This book reminds me I still have a long way to go. This book is written for a white audience to begin to see their own racial bias, & I highly encourage the reading of this book!

I'm struggling to write a one-size-fits-all review. I think many will benefit from reading this, because it shows a character arc from denial of their own biases and privilege to acknowledgment. This said, the Turk POV chapters (based on interviews with former white supremacists), while enlightening, are a trigger minefield. Overall, a moving and well-realized story with minor logic issues.

Like Picoult herself says in the author's note, I wasn't sure what to make of a white person writing about a black person's experience with racism. I mean it's okay for a woman to write as if she's a man, but race is different.

In Picoult's signature style there are alternating perspectives told in first person and there is a twist that I did not see coming.

The picture is just my current reading view.

Reggie I haven‘t read this book but I read her latest one about abortion. But I did go look up some interviews with her and she does this one with Oxford for this book and I fell in love with her. She is so authentic, articulate, and empathetic. She describes what she did to be able to write this book because she knows she comes from a place of privilege. She also goes into the event that inspired the book. Anyways I need to read this book. 8mo

Ruth is a well respected labor and delivery nurse, so why, on this typical day, are these new parents suddenly requesting a new nurse. Because she‘s black.

The parents are white supremacists.

Then, after the unthinkable happens, Ruth is put on trial, and Jodi Picoult so elegantly weaves the characters lives together and gives us readers every perspective.
