Got distracted at the library today! Went in for an audiobook and came out with these two. 😊
I watched The Joy Luck Club ages and ages ago - I think the book will be great. I've had my eyes on The Memory Police too.

Not sure what took me so long to read this book from 1989, but I'm glad I finally did. It was a joy.
I really enjoyed this modern classic, and I'm glad it included a character list and a table of contents, because I was a little confused at first about who was narrating, how it was related to the rest of the story, etc. But in the end it was just so enjoyable. 4⭐
I just started this, and I can already tell it's going to be way up my alley. Having trouble putting it down so I can go to work!
My only reference for this is the movie, and for some reason I keep combining it in my mind with How to Make An American Quilt, which must have come out around the same time. They were also both mom books when I was a kid. I'll have to put HtMAAQ on my TBR, has anyone else read it?
This #alphabetbookishquiz was fun! Thank you @RealLifeReading!
Bookish mail! I got 3 sleeves made by @createdbyraemn over on Instagram and she threw in the bookmarks. I also got this book for less than $3 shipped. Not the best condition, but yeah! It's old and it was $3. $2!
I‘m featuring this novel #Because it‘s an inspirational read about the lives of four daughters and their respective mothers as they navigate life in America. Great for #ImmigrantSong and Mother‘s Day celebration today.
Happy Mother‘s Day!

#QuotsyMay19 Day 8: It is good to #shift one‘s thoughts and beliefs depending on context and experiences and demonstrate a measure of flexibility. Not sure, though, if this quote is directly from tagged book which I must have read decades ago. 😭🧚🏼♀️📚💕
First day of Easter vacation, and spring has arrived!!
Had a lovely, quiet morning at the balcony in the sun finishing up this little gem of a book. Very much enjoyed reading all these short stories about the Chinese American immigrant experiences, that blended tales from two generations and old folklore.
Every story had high quality, and there really were no weak ones. But I do think the older generation held the edge. 4.5⭐️

Reliving my favorite decades book by book. Here‘s my #80sretroreads list!

The 80‘s! My love for books knew no bounds & I read every spare minute (I‘m a huge nerd but loved to disco too) 👯♀️🤓
The Joy Luck Club by Amy Tan 👭😭
The Prince of Tides by Pat Conroy 🌊
The Remains of the Day by Kazuo Ishiguro 🥇
Queen of the Dammed by Anne Rice 🖤⚰️🧛🏻♀️ @monalyisha
Lmk your faves! Any disco lovers?
The book tagged is the latest one in my collection. I love the colors- this collection is so pretty! 😍 Anybody else collect these?
While a lot of it was beautifully written and compelling, I wasn‘t sure what to take away from this read. Family dysfunction is universal? It‘s certainly more nuanced than that as it explores conflict across generations, countries, and cultures. Ultimately worth the read.
Highly revered for a reason. I loved the details and learning about Chinese superstition and culture! Loved the relationship of mom and daughter and the vignette style read this was! I loved how it all tied together by the end and the set up of the chapters. A quick read but a memorable one! Of course no book is perfect, I do wish there was more detail to characterizations but overall, enjoyable and leaves the reader with stuff to think about!
On a better note, starting this one after years of my mother suggesting The Joy Luck Club, I am finally reading it. It‘s her favorite book and this dedication already has me smiling as someone incredibly close to my mother!
Do you all have any books that mean a lot between you and a relative?
Last book of 2018.
Yesterday evening I finished The Joy Luck Club. I wanted to post something right then and there, but for a moment I was immobilized. Amy Tan gives a tender beautiful and at times painful examination of motherhood (specifically mother-daughter relationships). I, being a daughter, should have gravitated there, but instead was lead to examine how I am mothering my son...how am I recognizing the individual within him?👇🏽
This was book no. 30 for 2018 and inspired my TBR for 2019. Wanting a diverse literary viewpoint, I will only be reading books from female authors and people of color for 2019.
I always enjoy this book whenever I read it. Reading it in this day and age brought out its definite boomer aspects in an interesting way.
"When you lose your face..., it is like dropping your necklace down a well. The only way you can get it back is to fall in after it."
This was a re-read for me - I originally read it in the early 90s, and it was just as touching the second time, but with a different perspective of now having a daughter of my own.
A look at mother-daughter relationships though the viewpoints of Chinese mothers and their American-born daughters.
Someone seems to have borrowed my copy of this novel of Chinese-American families in San Francisco, #California and never returned it 😑 Though the book isn't perfect, I was deeply touched by the depiction of fraught mother-daughter relationships in both the book and the movie adaptation. #NoFemmeber

Been a while since I shared what I was reading! Just finished Rules of Magic and I‘m diving into this classic. Also finally trudging my way through the Red Rising series, which is kind of disappointing me 😒
For 25 years this book has been a classic novel of family, myth, history, and love- that kind of love between people who are bound together by blood and sacrifice. Equal parts playful and heartbreaking, this interwoven collection of stories is the definitive work of first generation Asian American writers coming to terms with their parents hopes for their children‘s lives to extend beyond their reach.
😭I have a flat tire which I could have changed myself, but it‘s rainy, sleeting and all of 34 degrees outside. So I‘m hanging out at Big O Tires waiting for what I hope is a patch repair job. I have my water bottle and my book and some unexpected time off from work. This is doable...possibly even with some joy!😃
Amy Tan‘s writing is gorgeous. I‘m embarrassed that it took me so long to read this book.

This is what I decided to read next. It called my name after I watched the second episode of The Great American Read show. I actually thought that I had read it. It sounded so familiar and it was so big at its debut. It was one of my book club selections years ago, but I don‘t have it marked as ‘read‘ anywhere. I can only conclude that it is unread...an astonishing revelation that must be fixed.😳

I can see how #thejoyluckclub is highly regarded for being the pioneer of its own genre—I‘m not certain if others of its kind have been able to follow its success since its publication. Outside of the cultural references, the book showed many facets of mother-daughter relationships that probably any woman can identify with. I‘m a couple of decades late in catching on, but I‘m glad I finally came around to reading this. #amytan
She was perfect. I found every detail about her to be remarkable, especially the way she flexed and curled her fingers. From the very moment she flung her fist away from her mouth to cry, I knew my feelings for her were inviolable.
If you are greedy, what is inside you is what makes you always hungry.
Amy Tan is the only author at #NatBookFest who has a book on the #GreatAmericanRead list. Who knew! On the right is Marie Arana.

New day and I‘m reading a new book! Already almost halfway finished. #summerlovinreadathon #telleverybookworm9
Book Two from my #MakeMeReadIt list. Such a moving view of Chinese culture, mother vs daughter, hopes and dreams, and sorrows and triumphs. I enjoyed this and am glad I finally took the time to read it. Definitely worthy as one of the Great American Reads and fulfills one of my #GARBingo squares.
What a lovely dedication. Looking forward to finally reading this. It's only been on my tbr for, oh, 10+ years...

#agameoffavorites Day 6: Author of Color
I have a lot of favorite authors who are people of color (Toni Morrison, Zora Neale Hurston, N K Jemisin, Min Jin Lee, Isabel Allende, Arundhati Roy, etc.) but today I wanted to share one of my very favorites: Amy Tan!
In an interview in 2013, Tan mentioned she had enjoyed Ford's Canada and Jane Eyre, and that she liked writer Ha Jin and Chinese classic book Jing Ping Mei, among others. Link in comments.
This is number 2 on my #MakeMeReadIt list. Starting this today, but will have to set this aside tomorrow, as I will have to start this month‘s historical fiction book group book.
Part of my #tbr for August. Other books will be added to this, but as these are most of my #MakeMeReadIt books, I can at least take a picture of them. #austeninaugust
How have I never read this before now? Such a beautiful book!
Finished the audio of this beautiful story of 4 Chinese women, recent immigrants to San Francisco who form The Joy Luck Cub. 40 years later story and history continue. Amy Tan examines deep connections between mothers and daughters. A very moving account and a true classic. Sad but story ends on a very positive note. #thegreatamericanread #amytan
