The Map of Salt and Stars
The Map of Salt and Stars: A Novel | Zeyn Joukhadar
This powerful and lyrical debut novel is to Syria what The Kite Runner was to Afghanistan; the story of two girls living eight hundred years aparta modern-day Syrian refugee seeking safety and an adventurous mapmakers apprenticeperfectly aligns with the cultural moment (The Providence Journal) and shows how interconnected two supposedly opposing worlds can be (The New York Times Book Review). This beguiling (Seattle Times) and stunning novel begins in the summer of 2011. Nour has just lost her father to cancer, and her mother moves Nour and her sisters from New York City back to Syria to be closer to their family. In order to keep her fathers spirit alive as she adjusts to her new home, Nour tells herself their favorite storythe tale of Rawiya, a twelfth-century girl who disguised herself as a boy in order to apprentice herself to a famous mapmaker. But the Syria Nours parents knew is changing, and it isnt long before the war reaches their quiet Homs neighborhood. When a shell destroys Nours house and almost takes her life, she and her family are forced to choose: stay and risk more violence or flee across seven countries of the Middle East and North Africa in search of safetyalong the very route Rawiya and her mapmaker took eight hundred years before in their quest to chart the world. As Nours family decides to take the risk, their journey becomes more and more dangerous, until they face a choice that could mean the family will be separated forever. Following alternating timelines and a pair of unforgettable heroines coming of age in perilous times, The Map of Salt and Stars is the magical and heart-wrenching (Christian Science Monitor) story of one girl telling herself the legend of another and learning that, if you listen to your own voice, some things can never be lost.

I tend to read a lot of fantasy, but my reading gets more diverse when I'm working in a library, and here we have one about Syrian refugees travelling to safety. This book really struck me in places, though at times the alternate timelines annoyed me as I wanted to rush through the present timeline

Itchyfeetreader I agree - whilst the modern day story was incredibly sad it was the older one that captivated me 4mo
LacklustreRogue I mean, I wanted to rush through to find out what happens present day- I was more interested in the present day than the past. I think I would appreciate it more on a second read through 4mo

What a beautiful story that was mesmerizing and inspiring to read. The story of a familys struggle as they travel from their home and make their way throughout the middle east. To see the struggles this family faces and how they depend on one another to overcome it. Beautiful.

Beautiful, amazing, magnificent inspiring just wonderful.

Not read but found this fitting for #ayupaugust #star and #LetsTravelAugust

The novel tells the story of a family on their journey from their home in #Syria to safety in another country, through the eyes of Nour, the youngest daughter. The story moves between two narratives - an account of a Syrian refugee and a medieval tale of a mapmaker‘s assistant.

What a beautiful story – two stories, actually! The imagery it provokes made me feel like I was right there with them. It also opened my eyes as I had to keep reminding myself that one half of this book was set in 2011, you could easily fool yourself into thinking this stuff was happening 20–30 years ago. The sad thing is it still happens today, but books like this keep the beauty of those places alive.

I loved this story. There is so much going on. A legend of a girl centuries ago, a modern refugee story, the trials of travel and trust while female. Above all, the magic of family and our histories.

This is a great option for #readharder2019 task 18 too.

The Map of Salt and Stars is important (so important) right now in understanding the crisis in Syria and in understanding why so many people cannot stay in their countries and must flee. Nour‘s story is told alongside a fable that was passed down their family and it ultimately all comes together in the end. A beautifully written and important book!

Moved back to Syria with her family, they end as refugees after their house is bombed and Nour almost dies. 800yrs ago 16yr old Rawiya must do something to support her widowed mother, disguising herself as a boy, she becomes apprenticed to the royal mapmaker. A solid debut about a refugee family fleeing from Syria in 2011, and all they have to give up along the way. I enjoyed this book, but not as much as I had thought I would. I had some problems with the plot, but overall I thought this was worth reading. Certainly should leave you with more compassion for the horrors endured by refuges when leaving their homeland.

Can‘t stop thinking about this book. 💗

“I don‘t get how you can draw a map without the blank parts.”

“Some people are born knowing they have to fill those places in. They are born with a wound, and they know from the beginning that if they don‘t find the story that belongs to them, that wound will never heal. Others take a long time to figure that out.”

12yo Nour sees the world through synesthesia, observing her sisters & mother after the loss of her father in 2011 prompts a move to Syria from New York (the only culture/language she knew). The girl‘s wisdom & the war-torn story both reminded me of the masterful writing of Bianca Marais who also paints an intricate story. Add in the adventure from Tomi Adeyemi with “banal” travel of Orhan Pamuk‘s— and you get Joukhadar, who has serious chops.

I was delighted to learn I have tomorrow off so I wanted to celebrate the holiday. But it took 5 stops at other bars post-work to find a place I can settle in to a chair in a room that is a dull enough roar for me not to want to pull my hair out.

Here‘s a query for you Littens: is it crazy to think I could establish a bar/bookshop designed for introverts/bookworms and be successful? Would you go out to a bar alone to read/drink & talk quietly?

Slajaunie Yes! 2y
Billypar I've had this dilemma- it seems like an issue with crowded and loud versus dim. The first kind are impossible, but reading by tea light wears on the eyes, no matter how quiet and cozy. I would love a bar designed specially for reading. 2y
Melissa_J Honestly, if I‘m looking for quiet I would just stay home rather than go to a bar, even one designed for introverted bookworms. That said, I would definitely go to a literary themed bar quiet or not. 2y
SomedayAlmost Yes! Wine and quiet! My extensive research into my personal demographic suggests that mothers of kids under 10 appreciate wine and quiet reading time! 2y
JHSiess Truthfully, I wouldn't go out. My kids are grown, my house is quiet. I have a lovely patio & lots of wine because I live in wine country -- last I heard, there are app. 85 wineries in Lodi! 🍇🍇🍇🍷🍷🍷 But it's a lovely idea & if I needed an escape, I'd be a customer! 2y
Leftcoastzen Changing Hands has its First Draft wine and beer bar, usually quiet except when there is an event.light good enough to read of course. 2y

Leftcoastzen @QuietlyLaura That little Changing Hands bar serves coffee and tea too. 2y
Bookcation74 Yes! And it should have a patio! I hate that most places get pissy about a table for one on the patio 😡 2y
Hollie I would definitely love to go to a place like that. I keep saying when I win the lottery I‘d open a bookstore/bar because we are a 3 1/2 hour drive one way to the nearest bookstore 👎🏻 2y
KateFulfordAuthor Isn‘t that what a lot of bookstores do now anyway? Quiet reading spaces etc. 2y
mrozzz @Billypar Yes! If I find a place that is actually quiet but has no light, I‘ll pull up an ebook usually. But it‘d be great to find a place that checks all the boxes 2y
mrozzz @Melissa_J That‘s fair, of course. 🙂 I‘d want to create a space for people who want to go out on their own, or with a small group and actually hear others without shouting and not be overwhelmed by rowdy crowds. 2y
mrozzz @JHSiess That‘s heavenly! I‘m jealous. Happy to hear you might check it out if the idea came to life 🤗 2y
mrozzz @Leftcoastzen I just looked it up and I wish I wasn‘t so far from AZ!! 2y
mrozzz @QuietlyLaura I would definitely offer plenty of caffeinated drinks, mocktails, and a delectable menu of small bites. And literary events 😊 2y
Bookishthoughts Yes!!🎉🎉😊😊 2y
mrozzz @Bookcation74 DEFINITELY a patio!! And plenty of seating options catered to people who came alone! I‘m tired of feeling guilty for taking up a table for 4 when I‘m on my own 2y
mrozzz @Hollie Yes!! I would definitely quit my job and pursue it if I happen to win the lottery. It can‘t be fun being so far away 😫 2y
mrozzz @KateFulfordAuthor A few stores have cafes attached but they‘re not open late. Most bookstores don‘t have any seating, and if they do the chairs are uncomfortable & minimal 2y
KateFulfordAuthor @mrozzz Mel: If you‘re seriously considering this as a proposition, I‘d test it out in a low risk way. At the risk of stating the obvious (!), look to find a venue that could be filled at a time when its otherwise empty (e.g. a cafe that isn‘t open at night), locate a few book clubs who need a venue that is interesting, a mobile food supplier and then broker a deal so that you make a bit of money and learn what works or not ... 2y
mrozzz I‘m seriously considering, but not for a few years. This is great advice 💡😄 Thank you!! @KateFulfordAuthor I‘m often at Emma Straub‘s Brooklyn store (it just turned 1!) so I might try picking their brains as well. I mostly think I can‘t be the only one who feels a huge hole in nightlife options. I also play a lot of pool so that‘s a fun alternative, but I‘d love to be able to go out & be surrounded by books and other likeminded bookish people. 2y
