Gods Behaving Badly | Marie Phillips
39 posts | 69 read | 55 to read
From Marie Phillips, hailed by the Guardian Unlimited website as a hot author destined to break through in 2007, comes a highly entertaining novel set in North London, where the Greek gods have been living in obscurity since the seventeenth century. Being immortal isnt all its cracked up to be. Lifes hard for a Greek god in the twenty-first century: nobody believes in you any more, even your own family doesnt respect you, and youre stuck in a dilapidated hovel in North London with too many siblings and not enough hot water. But for Artemis (goddess of hunting, professional dog walker), Aphrodite (goddess of beauty, telephone sex operator) and Apollo (god of the sun, TV psychic) theres no way out until a meek cleaner and her would-be boyfriend come into their lives and turn the world upside down. Gods Behaving Badly is that rare thing, a charming, funny, utterly original novel that satisfies the head and the heart. From the Hardcover edition.

I am posting one book per day from my extensive to-be-read collection. No description and providing no reason for wanting to read it, I just do. Some will be old, some will be new. Don‘t judge me - I have a lot of books. Join in if you want!

This is really funny. Definitely jump in expecting something closer to chick lit than something more serious. The Greek gods are living in modern day London. And they are definitely up to their old tricks. A major goal seems to be making each other look as foolish as possible which is pretty on brand. I enjoyed it.

While the satire in this story was a lot of fun sometimes, at other times it was a little over-the-top for my taste. I'm glad I finally got it off my list, but not something I'd revisit.

3/5 for this one. This book was interesting. It was funny, but I didn‘t love it. I loved the premise but it wasn‘t exactly what I wanted.

I tried. It sounds hilarious, but it's not, it's so so so silly... I can't.

I have mixed feelings about this one. I almost DNFed this at one point but I didn‘t want to pick another dining table book so I kept with it. It was fairly fast to read but I didn‘t really connect with the characters besides Artemis and the plot was very predictable. All I can really say is meh. Book 4 for #ReadingEurope2020 #UnitedKingdom @Librarybelle @BarbaraBB

Librarybelle I like how colorful the cover is! 5y
BarbaraBB The cover is promising indeed 5y
lukulamppu @Librarybelle @BarbaraBB I like the cover as well! It‘s a shame the story wasn‘t really special (to me anyway). 5y

This was the perfect book, at the perfect time. It‘s an easy read. I didn‘t have to think too much. And it‘s silly stupid. Or is it stupid silly. It was a great distraction from real life.

Really wanted to like this one but it just never reached its potential. Glad to have some heroic action, but it wasn‘t enough to save the day for me. Perhaps if I knew more about Greek mythology...??? #igaveitatry

I love Greek/Roman mythology and this book puts all their "adventures" into a modern context. A quick, easy read, which I have reread several times ?

#mythology #aprilbookshowers. This is a story about a group of ancient gods living in modern England. Their power is waning due to a lack of true believers. This one is funny🐉 I have donated my copy so thanks Google.

Funny, completely bunkers, yet endearing. Yes, it's a retelling of Orpheus and Eurydice, yes, the end is simplistic and the reader can figure it out a mile away, how the gods didn't, well, Athena did but poor thing, she can't communicate to save her. Light tale of true love, family feud and how even gods need a little love. #aprilbookshowers #mythology

I was at the doctor this morning so I was able to get some reading done! 😊👍🏽
Now let's hope the doc finds out what's wrong with me🤞🏽. I hope all of those tubes of blood they took out of me are worth it. 😆 🤞🏽
Now, on to doing laundry, which means that I get to read some more! 🙌🏽😁💕📚💕

thegirlwiththelibrarybag Yes, inconclusive blood work is very frustrating! Hope that's not the case for you! Happy reading! 8y

Started this one too...it's not because the other two books I've started already aren't good. They're both wonderful, but I just remembered that I promised to start this one this weekend.😔 I wish I didn't have homework. #HomeworkSucks #NeedMoreReadingTime 💕📚💕

Mimi28 Even when I was an English ( creative writing) major I hated homework. The teachers were trying to force me to read hundreds of pages in between Monday and Wednesday classes and I had 5 classes. I rebelled big time and had a big grudge for Jane Austen because of it. This was back in 1995. I would read her stuff now, lol 8y
TheBookAddict @Mimi28 😂 you took out on Jane Austen. Yeah, it's ridiculous how much they expect us to read. I would have to quit my job and life to read everything they want us to. I just keep on telling myself that I have one more year left, I can do this. 8y
Mimi28 Yes!! You can do it!! I eventually changed majors. I got my degree in Interactive- Multi-media in 2006 after like 4 schools. Now I am unable to work because of emotional and physical breakdowns. I have a feeling you are MUCH stronger than I am though. Good luck!! You can do it!! 👍👍📚📚👩‍🎓👩‍🎓 8y
TheBookAddict @Mimi28 thanks, it definitely helps to have some moral support😊. Well some people are given more to deal with than others, so it's ok, as long as you're well and not suffering from breakdowns. Thanks so much! 😊 (edited) 8y

Not sure yet how I feel about this. Listening on audio and well, the narrator is interesting. The attempts to voice all the characters is kind of silly. This would have been good for a cast of voice actors. But it is minor I guess. It is definitely starting to get more interesting 50% through. So I will have to see how this pans out.

PS Android got the update. I can stickerize stuff now. 😆 I didn't but I can.

I've taken to writing a little note to whoever picks up the books I leave on trains/buses/planes ✨ this was a fun read; had some interesting philosophical theology problems that arise out of Greek deities converting to Christianity! The gods/goddesses were extreme caricatures of the versions that appear in the original myths, which was entertaining! ☀️☀️☀️🌤 #LitsyAtoZ @BookishMarginalia #litsyreadingchallenge #publishedtenyearsago @jessica

monkeygirlsmama I liked to leave a note 📝 inside books or on a sticky note on the cover. Your way is nice cause it won't get separated from the book while it's waiting for someone to find it. 8y
cleoh @monkeygirlsmama sometimes I'll use a sticky note if I have one, but I also like to think that whoever finds the book will pass it on again, so writing in the book means that someone will always find it 😊 8y

The age old question: how many books is too many for a week long trip? I currently have four tucked into my backpack, plus my Kobo 🙈 in my defence, I have several long train journey ahead of me! 🚂

scripturient I think that's a perfectly reasonable number. :) 8y
cleoh @scripturient one of them is Dark Matter so hopefully I'll actually have time to read it 😉 8y

I fought with myself whether to say "Pick" or "So-So" for this book. When I started it I was in a book slump, and I put it aside for a long time out of boredom. But when I picked it up again just now I really liked it. It's a fun satire. A creative story about Greek gods living in today's London. Characters aren't deep, but they're amusing. So, I'll give it 3.5/5 ❄️❄️❄️?

LilMamaMastro Love the premise; gonna have to add. Yeah, 'cause I don't have enough books on my TBR 😳😂 8y

In Gods Behaving Badly, we find the Greek gods and goddesses living together in a filthy, run-down house in London. Artemis is a dog walker. Apollo is working as a tv psychic. Aphrodite is a phone sex operator. Eros is a born-again Christian. Dionysus owns a sleazy bar, "Bacchanalia". Hermes is still responsible for shepherding the souls of the dearly departed on their way into the underworld, but the entrance to Hades lies within a subway tube.
