The Meadow
The Meadow | James Galvin
9 posts | 6 read | 7 to read
An American Library Association Notable BookIn discrete disclosures joined with the intricacy of a spider's web, James Galvin depicts the hundred-year history of a meadow in the arid mountains of the Colorado/Wyoming border. Galvin describes the seasons, the weather, the wildlife, and the few people who do not possess but are themselves possessed by this terrain. In so doing he reveals an experience that is part of our heritage and mythology. For Lyle, Ray, Clara, and App, the struggle to survive on an independent family ranch is a series of blameless failures and unacclaimed successes that illuminate the Western character. The Meadow evokes a sense of place that can be achieved only by someone who knows it intimately.

Defies categorization. It is a natural history of a WY mountain meadow, but is much more in that it includes sketches of the few people who have been closely connected to it over a 100 year period. The writing is evocative, beautiful, poignant, and sometimes snort aloud funny. Author is a poet so that tells you something. Absolutely loved it and will definitely will be a reread.

Pic is a Big Horn meadow above our favorite WY campsite.

Beatlefan129 Absolutely gorgeous 🏔 5y
Tamra While on the drive home I ordered Galvin‘s only novel. 🤞🏾 I also ordered his most recent compilation of poetry from the library. I wish he wrote more prose, but he doesn‘t appear to be prolific on that score. 😟 5y

Crazeedi Sounds like an interesting book! And lovely photo!❤❤ 5y

😆😂 I have enjoyed Faulkner. And the irony is of course that this book is not linear at all.

Zelma I completely agree with his Faulkner assessment. 😂 (edited) 5y

I‘m feeling sorry for myself (totally ridiculous) that our camping vacation is coming to an end we‘re driving thru the plains home. 😫 First of first world problems.

The beauty of the prose in the tagged book is so utterly amazing that for the first time ever I think I‘ll immediately reread it. The author is primarily a poet so no surprise there. I‘m midway thru and trying not to rush.

Cathythoughts So beautiful 5y
Tamra @Cathythoughts it‘s my favorite landscape. 😻 5y
Crazeedi I'm always so sad when we have to leave our camping trip after 2 weeks, I always want it to be 3, lol. The days just fly by 5y
ErickaS_Flyleafunfurled That book sounds beautiful! 5y
Tamra @ErickaS_Flyleafunfurled it really is. It isn‘t so much a novel or story per se, but a collection of descriptions of a meadow over time - weather, landscape, wildlife, people. 5y

WY meadow: “No one owns it, no one ever will. The people, all ghosts now, were ghosts even then; they drifted through, drifted away, thinking they were not moving. They learned the recitations of seasons and the repetitive work that seasons require.”

I haven‘t gotten very far into this one, but it is ringing all the right bells!

I‘m picking up one of my favorites for a reread.
I love this book. It is not big as far as plot but I feel it‘s sort of an epic, even though it is short. The sparseness of the lovely prose mirrors the beauty of where this book takes place. I love the Rocky Mountains, having lived most of my life in or near them.
#Booked2019 this book mentions many of my happy places, reminding me of them 🖤

jmofo Checking in for #24in48 came up short at 21:20 but I did make a decent meal with my roommate and after we read for an hour in the living room together which was great (he reads but reluctantly). Now it‘s not yet midnight in Colorado so I‘m going to enjoy the last bit of #24B4Monday curled up with this dear book. 🖤 to @TheReadingMermaid @Andrew65 (edited) 6y

This is one of my all-time favorite books. I don‘t know how many copies I have bought because every once in a while, there‘s someone I hope will love it too. It‘s quiet and beautiful, much like the meadow it is about. I am from Northern Colorado and I know I can‘t go home, but this book helps me feel close and something better. He also uses dreams to the best effect I have read. #24in48 #flyingundertheradarchallenge

I love all of my clients, but the retired librarian who brings me book suggestions holds a special place in my heart. Here's yesterday's list. The tagged book is what she's reading right now. #happybibliophage

"I better die soon," he said. "If I don't I'll have to move away. I can't make another winter here. I sure don't want to move. Don't think I could do it. All I ever wanted to be was home."
