pickThe wildly popular novel, Rebecca, was my introduction to Daphne du Maurier long ago, and it was always a favorite. (How could such a tale of "all-consuming jealousy and its murderous consequences" not be?) Only in recent years did I read any of du Maurier's other works. Tatiana de Rosnay beautifully furnishes us with du Maurier's story, which reads like a novel itself. I loved this biography. "And what if life was, ultimately, about pretending?"

Still partying! I didn't know anything about Daphne Du Maurier's life before reading this book. It is interesting although the writing style is kind of annoying. I tried the Grapey Grape and Tea at Starbucks this morning🍇

pickIt took me several pages to adjust to the writing style. It is written in present tense, which feels more like fiction than biography. Once I acclimated to the format, though, I really enjoyed this look into Daphne Du Maurier's life. She was a fascinating woman and I enjoyed reading about the inspiration behind her books...now I just need to finish reading them all:)
I didn't do as much reading during a weekend camping trip as I wanted but I did start this. Has anyone read it? I like it so far but it is written in a strange style that I'm afraid I won't get used it.
pickVery well done and gave a full image of a classic author. Will have to go back and read Rebecca with new insight and Du Maurier other works. I also had no idea that the Hitchcock film the Birds was based on one of her short stories.
Another clue ... Milton Hall was a house Daphne had visited as a child. I believe this photo labeled Manderley was the house used in the Laurence Olivier/Joan Fontaine movie.
@LauraBeth This is from the biography I mentioned. Daphne becomes fascinated with Menabilly, an abandoned house in Cornwall where she will eventually live.
This would play much better as a novel than as nonfiction. Labeling it "biography" predisposes me to certain expectations about genre, voice, and evidence that this book doesn't meet. I just can't see it as biography, even with the pages of notes (really just page references to other books). I can't get over the label. Readers more openminded than I will probably enjoy this look at Daphne du Maurier's life.

panI was so excited about this book. I first read Rebecca in middle school and then read through my local library's du Maurier collection. But I found the writing in this biography to be completely off-putting. Full of rhetorical Qs along the lines of: oh, what is a girl to do?! And she insists on referring to relationships and sex using the childhood code words of the du Maurier sisters throughout the entire book. Felt prudish and disrespectful.
So, the snow forecast produced only a light sprinkling here. But, the cold and ice are keeping everyone home. Time to curl up with some good books. Here's what I'm reading this weekend. ❄️☕️📚
