Manderley Forever | Tatiana de Rosnay
17 posts | 12 read | 45 to read
The nonfiction debut from beloved international sensation and #1 New York Times bestselling author Tatiana de Rosnay: her bestselling biography of novelist Daphne du Maurier. It's impressive how Tatiana was able to recreate the personality of my mother, including her sense of humor. It is very well written and very moving. Im sure my mother would have loved this book. Tessa Montgomery dAlamein, daughter of Daphn du Maurier, as told to Pauline Sommelet in Point de Vue As a bilingual bestselling novelist with a mixed Franco-British bloodline and a host of eminent forebears, Tatiana de Rosnay is the perfect candidate to write a biography of Daphne du Maurier. As a thirteen-year-old de Rosnay read and reread Rebecca, becoming a lifelong devotee of Du Mauriers fiction. Now de Rosnay pays homage to the writer who influenced her so deeply, following Du Maurier from a shy seven-year-old, a rebellious sixteen-year-old, a twenty-something newlywed, and finally a cantankerous old woman. With a rhythm and intimacy to its prose characteristic of all de Rosnays works, Manderley Forever is a vividly compelling portrait and celebration of an intriguing, hugely popular and (at the time) critically underrated writer.

The wildly popular novel, Rebecca, was my introduction to Daphne du Maurier long ago, and it was always a favorite. (How could such a tale of "all-consuming jealousy and its murderous consequences" not be?) Only in recent years did I read any of du Maurier's other works. Tatiana de Rosnay beautifully furnishes us with du Maurier's story, which reads like a novel itself. I loved this biography. "And what if life was, ultimately, about pretending?"

Congrats to @BarbaraBB and thanks for doing a #GiveAway. 😊 My favorite book of the first half of 2017 was this fascinating biography of Daphne du Maurier. It made me want to read and reread all of her books.

BarbaraBB That sounds great. I love her books but didn‘t know of this biography. Thanks! (edited) 6y

Still partying! I didn't know anything about Daphne Du Maurier's life before reading this book. It is interesting although the writing style is kind of annoying. I tried the Grapey Grape and Tea at Starbucks this morning🍇

It took me several pages to adjust to the writing style. It is written in present tense, which feels more like fiction than biography. Once I acclimated to the format, though, I really enjoyed this look into Daphne Du Maurier's life. She was a fascinating woman and I enjoyed reading about the inspiration behind her books...now I just need to finish reading them all:)

I didn't do as much reading during a weekend camping trip as I wanted but I did start this. Has anyone read it? I like it so far but it is written in a strange style that I'm afraid I won't get used it.

rubyslippersreads I loved it; the writing style didn't really bother me, and it left me wanting to read more du Maurier. 7y
Lissa00 @rubyslippersreads Great! I'm only a few pages in and can't tell if I'll get used to it or not. Thanks! 7y
Moonpa I couldn't read this one because of the writing style. Hope you have better luck! 7y

Very well done and gave a full image of a classic author. Will have to go back and read Rebecca with new insight and Du Maurier other works. I also had no idea that the Hitchcock film the Birds was based on one of her short stories.

Another clue ... Milton Hall was a house Daphne had visited as a child. I believe this photo labeled Manderley was the house used in the Laurence Olivier/Joan Fontaine movie.

@LauraBeth This is from the biography I mentioned. Daphne becomes fascinated with Menabilly, an abandoned house in Cornwall where she will eventually live.

Demanda I got an ARC of this and haven't gotten to it yet. Pretty good? 7y

rubyslippersreads @LauraBeth I'm wondering if Manderley is based on Menabilly? 7y

This would play much better as a novel than as nonfiction. Labeling it "biography" predisposes me to certain expectations about genre, voice, and evidence that this book doesn't meet. I just can't see it as biography, even with the pages of notes (really just page references to other books). I can't get over the label. Readers more openminded than I will probably enjoy this look at Daphne du Maurier's life.

LeahBergen I get really irritated by "biographies" that take too much license with a real person's voice. 7y
ValerieAndBooks And if this is written in present tense throughout even though it's actually the past, that would really irritate me too! @BookishMarginalia @LeahBergen 7y

BookishMarginalia @Anabnieto I definitely agree I'm a lot hard on this one! I couldn't overcome the labeling as biography. Had it been historical fiction, I'd likely have enjoyed it. 7y

I was so excited about this book. I first read Rebecca in middle school and then read through my local library's du Maurier collection. But I found the writing in this biography to be completely off-putting. Full of rhetorical Qs along the lines of: oh, what is a girl to do?! And she insists on referring to relationships and sex using the childhood code words of the du Maurier sisters throughout the entire book. Felt prudish and disrespectful.

Reviewsbylola What a disappointment. The issues you raised sound like they would irritate me too so I will skip this one. 7y
rubyslippersreads Oh no, I was looking forward to this. 7y
