Reality Is Not What It Seems
Reality Is Not What It Seems | Carlo Rovelli
From the New York Times-bestselling author of Seven Brief Lessons on Physics, a closer look at the mind-bending nature of the universe. What are time and space made of? Where does matter come from? And what exactly is reality? Theoretical physicist Carlo Rovelli has spent his whole life exploring these questions and pushing the boundaries of what we know. Here he explains how our image of the world has changed over the last few dozen centuries. In elegant and accessible prose, Rovelli takes us on a wondrous journey from Aristotle to Albert Einstein, from Michael Faraday to the Higgs boson, and from classical physics to his own work in quantum gravity. As he shows us how the idea of reality has evolved over time, Rovelli offers readers a deeper understanding of the theories he introduced so concisely in Seven Brief Lessons on Physics. His evocative explanations invite us to imagine, beyond our ever-changing idea of reality, a whole new world that has yet to be discovered.

Ah, finally it's Saturday and I can sit down and read. Also listening my beloved Rose Daughter by Robin Mckinley which is an absolute treat. 📚🎧👾

Incredibly informative but not the easiest to read 🤷🏻‍♀️

#Audiowalking my way home from work. I‘m enjoying the tagged book - even though a lot of the more abstract concepts are over my head - partially because I like the author‘s voice, partially because I like the narrator‘s.

#TBRtemptation post 2! What are time and space made of? Where does matter come from? What is reality? From Aristotle to Einstein, Faraday to the Higgs boson, the award-winning scientist shows in layman's terms how our ideas about reality have changed and how they'll continue to change because of quantum physics. #blameLitsy #blameMrBook 😎

LeahBergen I've been eyeing The Card Catalog. 👀 7y
mrozzz Agreed, excellent math @mcipher 7y
batsy Yes, you're doing it right 😀 7y
Suet624 Oops. And yippee! 7y
Redwritinghood @LeahBergen I'm looking at it today. There's some history on the development of the card catalog and the Library of Congress, but mostly it's pictures from their collection, many of which are great. Wish I could see the real thing now. 7y

Quantum gravity, quantum mechanics, loop quantum gravity, and time. I'm not gonna lie, some of this went right over my head but some was pretty engrossing. Give it a try, it's better to try and understand a little than be a complete Trump! 🌌🌠⌛️⏳🔬🔭⚗️

Laura317 A complete Trump! 😂😂😂 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼 7y
vivastory A complete Trump! I'm going to start using that! 👏 👍 7y

KathyWheeler My husband, who is a physicist, just read this book and recommended it to me. However, I don't have his understanding of the discipline and am afraid I won't understand any of it. 7y
Books_Wine_Repeat @vivastory 😁👍 @KathyWheeler This is the second Rovelli I've read. I think Seven Brief Lessons was easier to follow and understand. 7y
KathyWheeler @Books_Wine_Repeat My husband recommended that one to me too, but he consistently overestimates my understanding of these things. 😄 Maybe I will start this that one though since it's short. 7y
Books_Wine_Repeat @KathyWheeler The other one is less than 100 pages. He keeps it brief! 😉 (edited) 7y

Independent bookstores should be celebrated everyday, but today's a good excuse to visit your local (if you need an excuse). Here are a few more:

I really enjoyed this audiobook, even though I feel quite thick-headed when it comes to quantum physics. My favourite part describes the notion of thermal time: "There is no preferred direction of time without heat." And: "It is always heat and only heat that distinguishes the past from the future." An accessible translation from Italian by Simon Carnell & Erica Segre, smoothly narrated by Roy McMillan.

"The fact that [the Higgs particle] has been called the God particle is so stupid as to be unworthy of comment."
(Rovelli does not mince words.)

"To us, the idea of space seems natural, but it is our familiarity with Newtonian physics that makes it so. If you think about it, empty space is not part of our experience."

I love listening to science audiobooks, even though I sometimes have to rewind to be sure I've understood.

#TBRtemptation post! This cover is much too busy and hurts my eyes, lol; luckily, it doesn't carry over onto the pages. From the guy who wrote "Seven Brief Lessons On Physics" comes this just-released work. What's time & space made of? Where's matter come from? What exactly is reality? Rovelli explains how our image of the world has changed from Aristotle to his own contemporary studies. He explains in laymen's terms. #blameLitsy #blameMrBook ?

I judged the book by its cover (though 100x more attractive in hard cover) and now I am going to read this physics book.
