A Home at the End of the World
A Home at the End of the World: A Novel | Michael Cunningham
From Michael Cunningham, the Pulitzer Prize-winning author of The Hours, comes this widely praised novel of two boyhood friends: Jonathan, lonely, introspective, and unsure of himself; and Bobby, hip, dark, and inarticulate. In New York after college, Bobby moves in with Jonathan and his roommate, Clare, a veteran of the city's erotic wars. Bobby and Clare fall in love, scuttling the plans of Jonathan, who is gay, to father Clare's child. Then, when Clare and Bobby have a baby, the three move to a small house upstate to raise "their" child together and, with an odd friend, Alice, create a new kind of family. A Home at the End of the World masterfully depicts the charged, fragile relationships of urban life today.

Based on the reviews I had read, I didn‘t particularly expect to enjoy this book, but I ended up invested in the characters. It‘s a story of a love triangle in which things really do seem the best when Jonathan, Bobby, and Clare are all together, yet they can never truly be happy with that unconventional decision. It‘s also a story of friendship, family, and loss.

I finished it this morning on another walk with Luthien.

Daisey @CatLass007 I am not aware of this being part of a series. What other book are you thinking of? 4mo
CatLass007 I‘m sorry. I think I meant to post this on someone else‘s review and I didn‘t realize the the feed had scrolled on without me.🤷‍♀️ 4mo
CatLass007 Yep. The post before yours was the second book in a series. But I already added the book you reviewed to my Audible wish list before I saw your post. I guess someone else mentioned it. (edited) 4mo

A different kind of #LoveTriangle -- Clare, Bobby, and Jonathan have a baby and move in together to raise their child.

So much to think about, how to be yourself when you never quite fit in. Needing to find that home and self. Very reflective book.

Centique I loved this 😍 Just seeing the cover makes me feel like I‘ve seen an old friend. 3y

🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 I really loved this. We follow 2 boys from Cleveland, seeing the difficulties inside each one‘s family from their child‘s point of view - then as they become friends, grow and change and move away - we also get a mother and a girlfriend‘s point of view. Cunningham does self reflection like no-one else; this is a deeply naval gazing book for sure - but done so well. I fell in love with Bobby and the way he sees the world is so unique.⬇️

Centique I feel that Cunningham is trying to ask some of those huge life questions - do we have some kind of real self we should be trying to achieve or is muddling along all there is? Can we truly love another, truly know another? How much of our lives is approximation, compromise, failure to act? Does trauma change us essentially? No big answers just beautifully phrased questions. 4y
Centique If possible, read this book without reading the blurb which gives a bit too much away imo. 4y

First paragraph of this book. I love Michael Cunningham‘s writing. “Don‘t ask me. I was five.”

Brilliant.

I‘m only 20% in so no judgement yet on plot or characterisation - but the writing is so good. 🙌

Freespirit Lovely start....the plastic bags remind me of my grandmother who recycled EVERYTHING!😂😂😂 4y
MicheleinPhilly This reminds me - I should re-read some Michael Cunningham! 4y
batsy Ha, I love it! 😆 My mother is 81 this year and because I'm the youngest who's always having to answer all of her questions when my older siblings check out of a conversation 🙄, she keeps asking me if I remember things that happened before I was born 😭 4y

Centique @MicheleinPhilly I‘ve only just discovered him - I‘m 20 years behind 😂😂😂 4y
Centique @batsy you‘ll have to use that quote then! 😂 My dad will sometimes do that when he mixes me up with one of my three older sisters. “It‘s like that place we used to stay in Orewa” “Right, that would be when you took the girls in the sixties before I was born” “Well you‘ve seen the photos haven‘t you?” #Dad1-Paula0 😂😂 4y
batsy @Centique Ahahaha! That's my mum's response, too wrt "there's photos, why don't you remember" ?? 4y
BarbaraBB Great opening of the book. Cunningham used to be an auto-buy for me. 4y
Reggie There‘s a whole world in this page. This is wonderful. 4y
Centique @Reggie I know right? I wonder how long he wrote and rewrote and fine tuned to get it perfect? It‘s a heartbreaker this book so far 💔 4y

It was such a pleasure to revisit this beautifully written book. It's a story about chosen family, about three people who are all in love with each other in different ways and about creating a sense of home in the world. A true delight! #LitsyAtoZ #LetterC #queerbooks @BookishMarginalia
