Unhei moves to the United States from Korea. After the kids from school make fun of her name, Unhei considers choosing an “American“ name. The kids in her class make a name jar full of suggestions. Unhei realizes that her name is the one she wants and tells her class her name!

“'I liked the beautiful names and funny names you thought of for me,' she told the class. 'But I realized that I liked my name best, so I chose it again. Korean names mean something. Unhei means grace.'“

I relate to this book because as a child I always wanted to change my name to something different, like famous people I loved names. As I grew older I realized that the best name was my very own name because it was unique to me.

This book is a great book for elementary school students at the beginning of the school year or if you have a new student coming to your class because like the character in the book she feels like she has to change her name because she is worried the kid in her new class wont like her. She tries to pick an American name. She eventually learns that the best name is her name she was given.

I‘m not sure how the book came across my radar but i‘m so glad it did! Unhei is new to the US and nervous about making friends and fitting in at school. Her name feels strange to her and so she decides to consider something new. She finds her way to the right name with help from a new friend. #BookspinBingo @TheAromaofBooks

Poetry. This is a story about a little girl who is trying to fit in. She wants her name to fit in too and begins to wonder if she should go by a new name. It explores themes of difference, identity, and cultural assimilation. Overall a wonderful read.

This RF book is great RA for teaching acceptance for yourself and your culture. When Unhei moves to America from Korea she does not like her name and decides to tell her class she does not have a name and that they should put names in a jar to help her decide. A sweet story about being proud of your heritage and the trouble immigrant children face trying to fit in. As a child of immigrant parents, I struggled to fit in as well. I love that there are books like these around now that can help kids empathize with others that are different as well as empower those who feel different to be brave and embrace who they are.

Unhei is at a new school in a new country, and after some teasing, initally decides she needs a new 'American' name that doesn't stand out. This is a lovely story that addresses cultural identity and how to be sensitive and inclusive towards new students from other cultures. And reinforces that everyone deserves to have the people surrounding them learn to pronounce their name properly.

I love this book! In our class this semester our professor read it to us to show ways we can incorporate diversity into our class! This is a really great story that I think younger students will enjoy!

This is about a new student named Unhei. No one pronounces her name correctly so she really wants an american name. Her entire class starts coming up with names and adding them to a name jar for her! Another student though really loves the meaning and history behind her name so he convinced her to keep it!

This is a great book about a Korean girl moving to America and considered changing her Korean name to an American name. What a sweet story about friendship.

When Unhei immigrates from Korea and begins school in the U.S. she finds that some kids have trouble pronouncing her name. Wanting to fit in, Unhei decided to choose an American name for herself.

Her family and community remind her that she should be proud of who she is, and her name, giving her the courage to teach her name to her new classmates.

Good story for gradeschoolers, even though the layout and pics are just okay.
