This Year You Write Your Novel
This Year You Write Your Novel | Walter Mosley
13 posts | 11 read | 17 to read
No more excuses. "Let the lawn get shaggy and the paint peel from the walls," bestselling novelist Walter Mosley advises. Anyone can write a novel now, and in this essential book of tips, practical advice, and wisdom, Walter Mosley promises that the writer-in-waiting can finish it in one year. Intended as both inspiration and instruction, the book provides the tools to turn out a first draft painlessly and then revise it into something finer. Mosley tells how to: - Create a daily writing regimen to fit any writer's needs--and how to stick to it. - Determine the narrative voice that's right for every writer's style. - Get past those first challenging sentences and into the heart of a story.

A very short and approachable primer for writing a novel. It covers all the basics: establishing a routine, choosing your POV, crafting plot and dialogue, using language appropriately, reading your drafts, and making edits. He also ends with a bit of advice for getting published.

My one gripe with this was his excessive use of examples that involved sex and/or violence. Is that all he could come up with??

“The process of writing a novel is like taking a journey by boat. You have to continually set yourself on course. If you get distracted or allow yourself to drift, you will never make it to the destination.”

Good advice, albeit not very helpful for writers with ADHD, in my opinion.

(Post 2 of 3) But also have really made great strides in my mental health and tackling my self worth (or lack there of) and anxiety/depression. I found on my journey that my reading for sure fell by the waste side with only reading 11 books thus far this year.. HOWEVER I have learned that im done putting pressure on myself to try and keep up with my friends who are apparently all velocireaders 🤣😂🤣

Becker 11 books is almost 1 a month. That is pretty consistent reading. Hopefully you enjoyed most of them. I would say a lot of people would be quite pleased to have read 11 books in a year. 👏 3y
Callemarie @Becker i probably should have put a disclaimer that 5 of those were in January and then I didnt finish a book again until july 🤣😂... typically I range from 50-60 a year so, for me, it was not a typical year.. but you sre right.. in hindsight im.oroud I got through that many this year 3y

(Post 1 of 3) I wanted to take a few moments to discuss my past year on my favorite platform out there. I feel, like probably everyone else, this year has been filled with unknowns, fear, heartache, joy, anxiety/depression, and the list goes on. As shitty as this year has been, it has made me refocus on myself.. which is something I hadn't been doing for years. So this year I've worked on both my physical and mental health, losing 65 pounds so far

zezeki That's amazing! 💪🏼💪🏼 3y

A good starter book on writing by a great novelist. Not a long read but a good one. Filled with straightforward guidance of practical value. I understand he will be publishing another monograph to help writers later this year. Which reminds me I should get back to writing.

Got this in the mail today. Looks like something I can knock out in one sitting so maybe I'll do that over the weekend. It looks like it might be fairly basic but that's okay if it motivates me to get some writing done!

This book is easy to read, not boring, and a great length. Not too long, not too short.

This is book two in my year of working on my craft. Mosley gives great ideas and thoughts into writing without coming off as a lecture. Indeed, this book reads like a novella. I recommend it to any writer, new or advanced.

Rachael_reads I just ordered this book!! 7y

"You will not become a writer by aping the tones and phrases, form and content, of great books of the past."

This is great, to be a writer you need to write, not just read. The masters are important, but so is the book you haven't written yet!

MrBook Looking forward to more of yours 😊👍🏻! 7y
