You all must be thinking (I'm just joking, you have important things to do) that have I completed "Charlie and the great glass elevator'? ? The answer is No. I have not. I'm close to completing it but homework and house chores got in the way ?

This book is so great! Sill reading it though! The writing is really simple to read. I hope to complete it today, if I can :P Recommend it to all of you! But first you have to read "Charlie and the chocolate factory".

Which books are you reading??? @Booksanduniverse @Mavey

mavey I'm currently on a hiatus😂 as exams are coming up soon. But the last book I read was the epic finale of Sabaa Tahir's Ember Quartet, A Sky Beyond The Storm. It is gold! I highly recommend the series if you love fantasy!💖 3y
BooksChocolatesCoffees Well, study well! I LOVE fantasy! 3y

It was OK. I can‘t help thinking if a child read this they‘d get bored and shifty. It felt like he had a hard time with this one, and it doesn‘t end well. He actually started a third but only got into one chapter which is probably for the best. I did enjoy his disdain for politicians in here. The ‘Chinese speak‘ was a bit weird, but not actually that bad considering his vintage? Every time I looked at the cover I saw the elevator as a joint haha

Plus: I now know where Vermicious Knids came from, which appears in family jargon occasionally.
Minus: everything else about this book.

Racism, sentient malevolent...turds? (See above, the Knids), de-aging and re-aging vitamins...and no framing story of any sense or consequence. Do yourself a favor and don‘t read this.

rockpools Oh heck. I‘d promised my brother I‘d re-read all the children‘s books here, to see which were utterly inappropriate for a 21st century book-mad toddler (she won‘t be a toddler by the time I‘ve got round to it). I hadn‘t even thought of these 😟 4y
KatieDid927 Roald Dahl was a vehement misogynist, racist and anti-Semite. He called Hitler a “stinker” who “didn‘t pick on [Jews] for no reason.” He was a deeply awful man. That being said, I still read and like some of his books, but yeah, they need to be read critically for this kind of stuff. And people should be careful about what they expose their kids to in his work. https://www.bbc.com/culture/article/20160912-the-dark-side-of-roald-dahl 4y
ravenlee @KatieDid927 I thought I liked Dahl as a kid but I realize now I only read two or three. As I‘m reading them now I honestly don‘t see the appeal of a lot of it. I read Fantastic Mr. Fox to the kiddo recently without reading it myself first and was not thrilled with my decision. I will read that article carefully; thanks for the link. 4y

ravenlee @rockpools that is a daunting undertaking! I wish you luck. I‘ve been working on something similar for my kiddo - so far I‘m happiest with Lloyd Alexander, of what I remember reading myself as a kid. Nancy Drew (which I never read) had some surprisingly problematic things in a lot of the books! 4y
KatieDid927 @ravenlee No prob! I still really like Matilda, personally, but I do think some of his other famous works are a tad overrated. 4y
nanuska_153 Yes, I'm doing a book club with my nephews and we are reading all his books and I didn't enjoy this one at all either, felt tempted so many times to just give up... 4y

I‘m about 1/3 in and really can‘t wait for this to be over. If it wasn‘t short I‘d ditch it. I know Dahl tends toward the goofy, but this...is just dumb so far.

megnews I didn‘t care for this. 4y
TheBookHippie I agree 😬 4y
Ruthiella I liked it at 10 but maybe it doesn‘t hold up for adults. 4y

The sequel to Charlie and Chocolate Factory. The whole family go on board of the Great Glass Elevator to go back to live in the Chocolate Factory. The whole book goes from one adventure to another all caused because the grandparents are terribly annoying and complaining all the time. Wonka is too much Wonka and seems to have less magic and more senseless craziness in this book. I didn't enjoy it at all, although my nephews still liked it

Ruthiella I liked this as a kid! 😀 4y

It was over all a good story. Several racist bits that were not ok, I believe this was written in the 60s but that doesn‘t excuse it.
I like Dahl‘s writing and his creativity. This doesn‘t hold up the The Chocolate Factory but it‘s a nice continuation.
⭐️⭐️⭐️1/3

Reviewsbylola We just finished this one and my kids were gobsmacked that there isn‘t a third book. Which I don‘t think there is but I‘ve been wrong before. 😆 5y
OrangeMooseReads @Reviewsbylola I don‘t think there is a 3rd book either. It would be interesting to see how the Bucket family and Willy faired on their next adventure. 5y

It's been...five years(?) since I read the first one, but you don't really need to in order to read this. It would give you context for the characters, but the story is almost completely separate from Willy Wonka's factory. The narration on this one was great. I enjoyed the story as well, but it felt a little more disjointed than the first book. I can see how it probably inspired Douglas Adams in HGttG. Overall, a fun little book. First of 2019!

I read this with my six year old daughter, the first time for both of us. We agreed that it just didn't have the same magic as Charlie and the Chocolate factory.

StairwayToHeaven I admit not remembering if this was any good or not. But this was the first book I ever read in English, so it does hold a special place in my heart. 7y
Joanne1 @StairwayToHeaven I can understand that sentiment. Did you read it as a child or an adult? I found it quite absurd and without a great deal of plot (all of Dahl's work has elements of absurdity but usually within a fantastic story). Have you read any of his others? 7y
StairwayToHeaven @Joanne1 I have read a great many of his books in Dutch when I was little and loved them (Matilda I have read and reread both in Dutch and English), but never Charlie. It was pure chance that I read Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator later on when I was twelve. My mom had just said that it was time for me to begin reading in English and this was the first book I encountered on our shelves that looked doable, so I went for it. 7y
Char @Joanne1 I remember reading this as a kid, and I re-read both books a few years ago; I agree the second one just doesn't have the same magic as the first. 7y
Joanne1 @Char for some reason I never read this one as a kid. I read most of the others though. 7y

This book is bonkers ridiculous and not ashamed of it. But it is entertaining and scary how much I can imagine Trump tweeting all the stuff Dahl attributes to the American President in this book.

I loved reading all of these books when I was younger and this one is a classic. "Charlie and The Great Glass Elevator" by Ronald Dahl, Illustrated by Quentin Blake. The last everyone saw of Charlie he had won an endless supply of chocolate and Willy Wonkas factory. To celebrate Wonka toke Charlie and his Grandfather on a ride in his glass elevator, no one could have guessed what happened next. As the glass elevator shot through the sky..

Dbenford Willy Wonka, Charlie and his Grandfather went straight into the clouds and into outer space. Read as Wonka, Charlie and his Grandfather battle monsters, and discover in worlds in the future. This book takes the reader on a crazy adventure. The link that I found for this book is a fun lesson plan that can be utilized in the classroom www.roalddahl.com/docs/Lesson1-Charlieandthe_1436786237.pdf. 7y
Dbenford The UDL that I chose was 5.2 (Use multiple tools for construction and composition). The ELL strategy I chose was 8 (Use direct instruction: modeling, explaining, scaffolding, name the strategy and show how to use it). This book would also be great to use for IR, S, LC, RA, PR, and AS. (edited) 7y
DrSpalding Every child should read this book! Going straight to the author's website is wise. There are so many wonderful resources there. Use them. 7y

Launching into this with 6-year old Bella after a few anti-chapter-book weeks. She's skeptical "...it can't be as good as the Chocolate Factory..." and I've never read it. Wish us luck! The question is whether she lets me make it to the end, she fully exercises her "rights of the reader" and can be ruthless if she's not impressed!?‍?

Joanne1 My daughter loved Charlie and the chocolate factory but insisted we bailed on this one. Didn't cut it after the first. 8y
JillR I think mine would agree - her review "it's not as good as the Chocolate Factory; not enough talk about chocolate"! 8y

The kids wanted to start the sequel the very moment we finished listening to Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, and not even rain could stop them from getting the next audiobook. The kids were dazzled by the sweet shop across the street from the library, so they each picked a treat and planned their next visit to a chocolate factory. We also spotted a rainbow on the way home. Only Roald Dahl could write such a magical day. #RaisingReaders

While I can still say I've never read a Dahl book I didn't like, this doesn't hold a candle to the first Charlie Bucket book. I enjoyed it and remembered liking it as a child, but it almost feels like two stories smashed together and kind of made me dislike the family that I was so fond of in the first book.

I remember picking this up in grade school reading the first few chapters and never finishing it. This weekend I finally put that to rights, and in classic Roald Dahl fashion the story is creative, odd, funny, and a little touch dark. I thought it was great.
