In Secret | Emile Zola
Emile Zola's story of adultery, murder, and madness soon to be a major motion picture starring Elizabeth Olsen and Jessica Lange In a dingy apartment on the Passage du Pont-Neuf in Paris, Therese Raquin is trapped in a loveless marriage to her sickly cousin, Camille. The numbing tedium of her life is suddenly shattered when she embarks on a turbulent affair with her husband s earthy friend Laurent, but their animal passion for each other soon compels the lovers to commit a crime that will haunt them forever. "Therese "caused a scandal when it appeared in 1867 and brought its twenty-seven-year-old author a notoriety that followed him throughout his life. Zola s novel is not only an uninhibited portrayal of adultery, madness, and ghostly revenge, but also a devastating exploration of the darkest aspects of human existence."

The excellent Backlisted podcast prompted me to pick up this cheerful little tale of stunted lives and murderous lust among the shopkeepers and petty clerks of Gay Paree. Even in translation, the power of Zola's descriptions is remarkable - the scenes in the Morgue, for example, would put Stephen King to shame.

BarbaraBB This was good! 2y
Daisey I agree that Zola writes amazing descriptions. I‘ve read and truly appreciated a few of his books, but this one is still on my TBR list. 2y

I always thought that I would have liked Émile Zola... and so it is!
This book is a brutal but accurate portrait of a woman of nervous temperament that get in intimate touch with a man of sanguine temperament.
Most of all, I loved the writing style! Direct but evocative 🤩

I am so thankful for a hot Oscar Isaac gif on Twitter for leading me to read this gem today. 😅

Deliciously dark, with a pervasive atmosphere of dread and loneliness which made me think often (and fondly) of Poe‘s The Tell-Tale Heart. Full of completely unlikeable characters, well-written, and pretty much a perfect gothic-type read.

I‘m off to watch In Secret now. 😬

Palimpsest I just saw that original painting that‘s on the cover of your book called Melancholy by Degas at the Milwaukee Art Museum last weekend in a special exhibit. I love it. I‘ve also been meaning to read Zola, but never have. 5y
vivastory I really liked this one. I agree about the Poe comparison 5y
sprainedbrain @Palimpsest very cool! This was my second Zola, and I liked it much better than Germinal. 5y

AlexGeorge Oh, it‘s such a good, creepy read! I recently purchased this again - looking forward to revisiting it! 5y
Daisey I haven‘t read any of Zola‘s books yet, but I‘m hoping to get to Germinal next month and I may need to move this one up the TBR as well. 5y
arubabookwoman I am slowly reading the entire Rougon Macquart series. I am currently on book 14, The Masterpiece. I love Zola! (Therese is not part of the series, but I've read it ad well). 5y

I already had a healthy appreciation for Oscar Isaac, but earlier I was scrolling around Twitter, minding my own business, when I saw this tweet (don‘t click if you‘re easily offended by potty mouth and sexy stuff, but it‘s not THAT bad):

https://twitter.com/rdotspoon/status/1215859401162051584?s=21

So anyway, I saw that this movie is based on a book on my TBR, and now I‘m halfway through it so that I can watch the movie. And WOW. 🔥🤤

Andrea313 There is just...so much that is great about all of this. 5y
ErickaS_Flyleafunfurled Love this! 😂Interesting book too - I liked it a lot. So dark! 😈 (edited) 5y

sprainedbrain @AlaMich mine is translated by Robin Buss. I‘m almost done with it. 😨 5y
AlaMich @sprainedbrain I‘ve also heard that Kate Winslet‘s narration of the book is excellent. I‘m stacking it. 😊 5y
Reggie Lolol wow those lips just kinda swallow her up. So lucky that Elizabeth Olsen! 5y
sprainedbrain @Reggie So lucky. I can‘t stop looking at that gif periodically. I may need help. 😂 5y

sprainedbrain @HOTPock3tt It was sufficiently hot! It does get dark (like the book) but I really enjoyed. As usual, the book was better, but good heavens that man is fine. 🔥🤤😂 5y

I chose this book on a whim and, though much of the plot, societal criticism, and dark humor is predictable, it breaks from expected storytelling norms in other satisfying ways. Plus, Kate Winslet did a fantastic job reading it.

I loved the thought process of each character throughout the entire book. I also loved the language used especially. The storyline was utterly fascinating. Once I completed the book, I watched the BBC 3 Part Series, then listened to the audiobook again. Fantastic story and storytelling!!

If Eastenders was set in France in the 1800s and lacked subplots. I freaking loved it.

Ye_Mighty_Andy_Spare That's quite possibly the greatest one-sentence book review i've ever read 6y
tournevis The made a movie out of Thérèse Raquin? Ok. 6y

catsuit_mango Strangely I read some zola when I was too young for it, then studied some more at school and not thinking of zola as a fun read... ;) 6y
BookishTrish @tournevis Apparently they did. Jessica Lange is the mama. I haven‘t seen it. 6y
BookishTrish @catsuit_mango I didn‘t realize it was a classic when I got into it because of the movie tie in cover so I read it like a trashy plot-driven novel and thoroughly enjoyed myself. 6y
tournevis @BookishTrish I started the book but Zola is not my guy. I've read a lot of his Rougon-Macquart books because 19th century Paris and that was my first field of study, but I never liked him. 6y

Melodrama abounds and in the heat of the moment I am in the action. Until. Within half a page I encounter not one but two words I‘m pretty sure are made up.

Sace Thanks for the excuse to use my dictionary app. 😂 6y
CouronneDhiver Ha! Oh English... such a funny language. 6y
Bette Not familiar so I looked them up: Hebetate- to make dull or obtuse; crispation - act or process of being curled, undulation. I probably will never use them. 🤣 6y
catsuit_mango I would have gone for the false-friend :in French crispation is when you are tensing up (and usually can not relax for a while) 6y

This book is insanely intense—it‘ll definitely make you feel something, but it‘s not a good feeling at all. I love that the guilt is the undoing of the characters even though they “get away” with their crime.

The quality of the writing is without question - not for nothing is it a classic of French literature (i.e the control of the language, the tightness, the sparseness, the accuracy of description, the illusions and metaphors - all a class above) But what a horrid little tale - vile characters, grim lives, monstrous acts, no joy, no redemption, no let up in the misery .... fantastically entertaining stuff! Appealed to the Gothic lover in me.

readingjedi Have to add - Adam Thorpe's translation was masterful. 7y

Oh, the drama of adultery and its consequences! One of my favourite themes! This one shocked France at the time of its publication (1867), an effect it didn't have on me in 2014. Nevertheless, a real page-turner, described so visual that I can visualize most settings and scenes as if it were a movie. #1001books

These two classics definitely contain deadly passions, and having referenced my love of hardy heroines earlier i had to include my favourite Tess of the d'urbevilles.

DeborahSmall Love love love Tess. ❤️️ Hardy my favourite 8y
andrew61 @DeborahSmall snap, definitely a desert island book, and julie christie as bathsheba is a desert island film. 8y
DeborahSmall I must say I prefer Natassja Kinski in Tess. It's a long movie but fantastic 8y

andrew61 @DeborahSmall thanks for reminding me, I'll try and find it ☺ 8y
TobeyTheScavengerMonk The last thing I had to do my freshman year in college was write a 9 page paper comparing Tess to D. H. Lawrence's A Shadow in the Rose Garden. I remember enjoying Tess and bits and pieces of the plot but literally nothing about the Lawrence story. Except that there was presumably a rose garden containing a shadow. 8y

He knew that, from now on, every day would be alike, that they would all bring the same sufferings. And he saw the weeks, the months, the years that awaited him, gloomy and implacable, coming one after the other, falling on him and suffocating him bit by bit. When the future is without hope, the present takes on a vile, bitter taste.

So this was a major milestone for me this past year. I read Therese Raquin in spanish in October and absolutely loved it. Best book I'd read in a while. I decided to choose it for one of my book clubs in March, and wanted to try reading it in its original french (I had taken lessons throughout my school years). Well, I did it! First book I've ever read in french (with a little help from kindle!) #translation #septphotochallenge #somethingforsept
