North Haven
North Haven | Sarah Moriarty

Sarah Moriarty's stunning debut is a portrait of the family scars and faults passed along the generations, brilliantly capturing life on the Maine coastline, where time seems to stand still even as the waters never stop moving. On an island in Maine, four siblings arrive at their sprawling, old summer place for the Fourth of July. It's the Willoughbys' first summer without their parents, and their beloved house is falling apart. When a substantial offer is made on the estate, the two brothers and two sisters are forced to confront issues they had hoped to keep hidden. An homage to the layers and limits of the family bond, North Haven explores the shifting allegiances between siblings as they contend with their inheritance, the truth of family lore, and even the veracity of their own memories. This lyrical and moving novel delves into the secret world that exists between parents, one their children don't fully understand, much as they may think they do.

This novel wormed its way into my heart.Beautiful lyrical writing, evoking a sense of the sea and sky and their colors,of salt air and sand and rocks and lobsters, and shared cocktails on the porch.A sense of place, on the coast of Maine,so vivid. It‘s about siblings with their secrets, misunderstandings, different experiences of their parents‘ parenting and marriage. It is about love transforming and transcending all,of grief and loss and letting go.

kspenmoll @monalyisha Thanks. I find them intimidating to write so appreciate your comment! 6y
pgh.femme I just got back from vacationing in Provincetown and want to read all of the New England shore books. Your review led me to adding this one to the growing list! 6y

“Carole King felt the earth move.” This line captivated me- allusion to Carole King perfect. Her music was playing in the background but this sentence still took me by surprise. Love the simplicity and the effect it had on me. #whenbooksmentionmusic #CaroleKing
Just started this library book today. Never heard of it; just looked like I should give it a chance. 📚🎼

#LibraryGirls
Our library‘s memorial statue to a young girl who died of cancer is joined for the summer by #ReadingGirl. These statues were loaned to the town & fun to find in both expected & unexpected places.

Littens! I don't know which kindle first to pick! These both sound so good - which would you pick?

Eyelit I had the same dilemma. I ended up picking the great passage. 8y
TrishB I picked The Great Passage too. 8y

RealLifeReading Me too! 8y
saresmoore I went with North Haven because of the setting. And Great Passage sounded a bit on the sentimental/sappy side for my taste. 8y
Zelma No idea but I adore both of those covers! 😍 8y
Kitta @saresmoore I'm worried I'll feel the same, I love translated works and Japanese fiction, but the content seems like it might be a bit meh. Love the setting of North Haven too. 8y

Kindle First pick for May. Wasn't sure which book to choose so I went with this book after reading that it takes place in Maine, one of my favorite places.

alanacristin Looks good! I went for the one translated from Japanese since I'm trying to read more from here than just crime 😂 8y
Sweettartlaura I went for this one, too 🙂 8y

My Kindle First May pick. Another added to the never ending TBR list. Sounds like an interesting read.

Kangaj1 I grabbed The Great Passage too. 😀 8y
Texreader I can't decide what to pick. 😬 8y
LauraBrook I grabbed North Haven. I think I'll be able to handle it in a couple of years. (Lots of family deaths for me the last 3 years and we're dealing w a messy estate situation now, but I'm hopeful that I'll get some healing and insight out of this one. Eventually. ) 8y
Bostonmomx2 I chose North Haven as well. I'm actually trying to slog thru my April kindlefirst book. I don't like the bitchy women but for some reason I keep going lol 8y
ValerieAndBooks I picked this one too -- mainly because of the Maine location! Probably will start it tomorrow on the treadmill, as I don't really have anything else new on it that's grabbing me. 8y

Just downloaded this free thru the #kindlefirst program. Hope it's good. I'm actually reading last month's pick right now and not really liking it. I think this gal might be related to the other Moriarty sisters but not certain.

Suzze I didn't pick any of them last month, nothing caught my eye. This month I picked The Great Passage. 8y
Denisereads75 I picked this one too, also because of the last name. I hope it's good. 8y
sprainedbrain I picked this one too! 8y
