Sisters | Raina Telgemeier
Raina Telgemeiers #1 New York Times bestselling, Eisner Award-winning companion to Smile! Raina can't wait to be a big sister. But once Amara is born, things aren't quite how she expected them to be. Amara is cute, but she's also a cranky, grouchy baby, and mostly prefers to play by herself. Their relationship doesn't improve much over the years, but when a baby brother enters the picture and later, something doesn't seem right between their parents, they realize they must figure out how to get along. They are sisters, after all. Raina uses her signature humor and charm in both present-day narrative and perfectly placed flashbacks to tell the story of her relationship with her sister, which unfolds during the course of a road trip from their home in San Francisco to a family reunion in Colorado.

I felt bad for Raina through a lot of this one. It was a well-told story, but it made me not like most of the family. I‘ve read a fair number of these GN memoirs recently (Shannon Hale‘s Friends, and the Nat series by Maria Scrivan is a fiction version) and they‘re all good. I‘m glad kids have books like these now.

Hooked_on_books It‘s a great cover 1y

Not sure if it was the same park, but when my oldest niece was about 7, my mom planned a trip to meet my brother‘s family for a vacation. It included a dinosaur park like this. My niece was so horribly disappointed she cried. Somehow she‘d gotten this idea there was a dinosaur petting zoo, and was just heartbroken that she couldn‘t meet and play with actual dinosaurs. This bit reminded me of that story and made me smile.

paper.reveries Hahahahaha such a cute memory you have! 😂🩷 We live in Alberta, dinosaur country, and one of my favourite trips to make is Drumheller, the hoodoo lands where they are still finding fossils to this day! 1y

Graphic Novel, 2014. This is a book about a girl who gets a new baby sister, but their relationship isn‘t how she expected it to be. Her baby sister plays by herself and is cranky, and their relationship doesn‘t improve much over the years. When a baby brother comes into the mix, they figure out how to have a better relationship as sisters.

This book is easy to follow and the font of the speech bubbles represents the ideal comic to me. The story is cute and easy to read, however it is extremely long and not broken up at all into chapters. There are also many boxes on each page of all different sizes, so it may be difficult to read.

Very relatable graphic novel that focuses on sibling relationships. Two sisters have to figure out how to be nice to each other and stick together because now they have a baby brother. Anger and humor combined to portray sibling rivalry.

This book is really good about teaching kids about having siblings and has so many cool and fun illustrations. The illustrator used a lot of dark colors to describe the sadness that the older sibling felt about having a younger sister.

3✨The animation like the previous book was really good. The story was one most of us can relate to growing up with siblings. There is also a road trip situation that all of us our familiar with in getting on each other‘s nerves. It was meh overall.

I really liked this book because it‘s actually non-fiction but the story is so heart felt and interesting that students would really enjoy it and it‘s easy to draw connections with! This book is a non-fiction/ autobiography novel and is a Will Eisner and New York Times best seller. I would use this book for a Literature circle as well but more as a beginners literature circle to get the hang of it because it is a bit shorter than most novels.

Hannacallaham For ESOL I would use 2. Promise cooperation and 10. Teach think, pair, share strategies in cooperative groups. For UDL I would use 8.3 and 7.1 5y

Another enjoyable graphic from Telgemeier. I bought this one for my middle one , we have exactly the same biological composition as the children in the book and some moments are very similar to ours, others of course are not. My two daughters are more similar than the ones in the text and that's possibly why they don't fight as much. A good fun quick read nonetheless. Recommend for anyone with 30mins to spare.

A peaceful moment among the worldwide chaos. I knew something was going on because it was too quiet! Luckily, it was something good. 😂 They‘re both (re)reading graphics by Raina Telgemeier. We do love our graphic novels. When I snapped the pic my son asked, “Is this for Litsy?” I guess I‘m predictable. 🤷🏻‍♀️

I liked this, but didn't love it. The different facets of the story were interesting & I liked the depiction of how hard life is at 14: everything is changing (inc. family relationships), younger siblings are a pill, & all you want is to disappear into your music. What didn't work for me was the way these stories were combined & how few were resolved. I did like how it ended, but I couldn't help feeling a sense of anxiety about the missing pieces.

This book is about Raina and her younger sister, Amara. This book details a long summer road trip taken from San Francisco to Colorado by her family. The main conflict in this novel is interpersonal, ( Raina vs. Amara ). This book is interpersonal because Raina and her younger sister Amara never get along and if they don‘t start soon, they never will.

I really love this book, it has so much heart and humour. The heart part of the story was mixed in well with money, job and relationship problems problems. If you like books that are funny but still have some sadness and maturities I think you will like this book. I think the author was feeling happy about writing this book because it shows that even if you don‘t always get along with your siblings you guys can last together in a car for a week!

MrsBabki I love that you are not afraid to write! 5y

I love rediscovering notes that my sister wrote to me when she was little 😂 we have a long standing joke about vampires which kind of explains this photo - I just remember how much fun we used to have taking silly selfies with an old school digital camera 😂

Free Comic Book Day, part 2! After I left the gals, I stopped by two more of the shops I like, so here is my final #BookHaul. Yes, I realize Uprooted isn't a comic book, but one of my faves is a used book store as well and I have been wanting this since I read it. Also, it looks like I'll finally be reading Raina Telgemeier! All in all, it was a nice day!

A good follow-up story to Smile. I always wanted a sister and after reading this, I was laughing my butt off between their back-and-forth banter! It‘s amazing as to how these sisters fought constantly, but they made it through a long road trip just fine 😊
