How to Live Safely in a Science Fictional Universe
How to Live Safely in a Science Fictional Universe: A Novel | Charles Yu
*This ebook includes photos, illustrations, and a bonus short story, which add to the ever-expanding world of Minor Universe 31. Photos and illustrations appear as hyperlinks in text. National Book Foundation 5 Under 35 Award winner Charles Yu delivers his debut novel, a razor-sharp, ridiculously funny, and utterly touching story of a son searching for his father . . . through quantum spacetime. Minor Universe 31 is a vast story-space on the outskirts of fiction, where paradox fluctuates like the stock market, lonely sexbots beckon failed protagonists, and time travel is serious business. Every day, people get into time machines and try to do the one thing they should never do: change the past. Thats where Charles Yu, time travel technicianpart counselor, part gadget repair mansteps in. He helps save people from themselves. Literally. When hes not taking client calls or consoling his boss, Phil, who could really use an upgrade, Yu visits his mother (stuck in a one-hour cycle of time, she makes dinner over and over and over) and searches for his father, who invented time travel and then vanished. Accompanied by TAMMY, an operating system with low self-esteem, and Ed, a nonexistent but ontologically valid dog, Yu sets out, and back, and beyond, in order to find the one day where he and his father can meet in memory. He learns that the key may be found in a book he got from his future self. Its called How to Live Safely in a Science Fictional Universe, and hes the author. And somewhere inside it is the information that could help himin fact it may even save his life. Wildly new and adventurous, Yus debut is certain to send shock waves of wonder through literary spacetime.

Every so often I encounter a book that feels like serendipity. If I had read this years ago, I would have panned it. I slogged through the beginning. I liked his world building, but had a hard time caring about the narrator. Then I got to the last 100 pages. I can see how it would be a bit of a downer, but he presents a very real articulation of life that is rarely heard in times where we must always portray our optimal selves.

Pathos and dry humour employed in the expression of the immigrant and first generation experience, slamming up against a wall of racial and class/economic privilege, seems to be Charles Yu's stock in trade. So does experimental writing styles. I'm basing this off of having only read Interior Chinatown before this one, but they do share some similarities.

Robotswithpersonality The frustrated ambitions of the father, the frustrated love of the mother, how a family is warped by the obsessive focus of one parent on scientific breakthrough and perceived prestige, when such never happens.
The wasted time in that pursuit of trying to find a way to manipulate time: tragic irony of humans pursuing time travel. 1/?
2y
Robotswithpersonality Amazing how much sense it makes that there would be a whole job created because humans would repeatedly attempt to rail against not being able to change the past. We already spend too much time dwelling on it now, wishing to rework it, without the mechanisms to do so, imagine if we had access to machinery that made us think it might be possible. 2y
Robotswithpersonality I've only read Mrs Dalloway for comparison, but I got similar Woolf style stream-of-consciousness in many sections.
There are also flashes that feel similar to The Maze of Transparencies - esoteric musings, disembodied yet somehow corporeal clouds of data and media.
The sensual description of the witing process in chapter nine is probably my favourite part, so satisfying in detail, textures, sounds! 3/?
2y
Robotswithpersonality The world building that presented as casual or introspective observations, notes, sci-fi slice of life, seemed promising. 4/? 2y
Robotswithpersonality There is a tiny bit of Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, a highlight reel of popular sci fi concepts told through the mode of an unconventional manual, but feels a bit misleading, to begin with meandering through an alternate universe in a time machine doing repairs and circling the idea of getting a life, and then develop into a full blown observation of the history of one father-son relationship as a metaphor for people's regrets writ large, how they wallow, and shouldn't.
Either is a good premise for a book, I'm not sure how well the two gelled together.
Still unsure what purpose was served by the self-insert, making the author the protagonist, felt a little too messy to be meta-narratively relevant.

I am posting one book per day from my extensive to-be-read collection. No description or reason for wanting to read the book. Some are old and some will be new. Don't judge me - I have a lot of books.

What the heck did I just read?

Catherine_Willoughby Explain lol 5y
vlwelser @Catherine_Willoughby So basically the author/narrator ends up in a time loop. But you can only time travel to the past because the future hasn't happened and you can't change the past because it already happened. It's pretty theoretical but I don't get the title because obviously it's fiction and you can do anything you want in fiction. So my brain is caught in its own loop. 5y

Whadayaknow, I got to finish another before 2018 goes out into the sunset!

This book reminds me strongly of John Dies at the End, it's all very meta in that the very book is a plot device & the author shares the same name as the protagonist. I was intimidated of this book a long time because science isn't my strength but you don't have to be a time traveler to appreciate the story of a guy trying to escape death and fix his life and family ties.

whimsy And also indulges on the bit about books being time machines on their own. 6y
whimsy Also I used one of the plastic book covers I got from Kinokuniya so it looks textbooky. 6y

One of the odder things I've read this year. Meta speculative fiction that takes time travel & turns the normal version of it on its edge. The author plays a lot with language & tenses & your brain gets a bit turned around trying to apply the linear-like concepts that help you keep track of things to a story that's not completely linear. An interesting read to be sure but definitely one where you need time to concentrate on what you're reading.

This really wasn't the "science fiction" book I was expecting. It's my pick for #lmpbc so I don't want to ruin it for #groupx. But I'll put some more thoughts in the comments.

Sarz I wanted this to be a fun, science fiction story about time travel, time loops, and murder. What it actually is is a bittersweet story about family, failure and loss. I didn't like it, not because the story was bad but mainly because it wasn't what I wanted. I didn't enjoy it. 6y
CarolynM Looking forward to trying this one when it gets to me🙂 6y

This book is fascinating and boring, at once. The idea—a guy who does nothing but zip around various universes fixing broken time machines—is great. But he‘s depressed and fairly inarticulate so it feels like you‘re spending a lot of time with a morose 13-year-old even though he‘s supposedly 30-ish. I‘m half way through and I keep reading because occasionally there‘s something great, like the bit above. #scifi

LiteraryinPA Great review! Thanks! 6y

I dig the experimental structure of the book itself, and I loved the conceptions of a kind of mathematics to describe narratives...I just felt like there wasn't much more going on than huge passages of narration with not much happening in too many places. Be aware: the title might lead you to think this is a comedy. It is not.
