Texas, My Texas
Texas, My Texas: Musings of the Rambling Boy | Lonn Taylor
17 posts | 1 to read
In a collection of essays about Texas gathered from his West Texas newspaper column, Lonn Taylor traverses the very best of Texas geography, Texas history, and Texas personalities. In a state so famous for its pride, Taylor manages to write a very honest, witty, and wise book about Texas past and Texas present. Texas, My Texas: Musings of the Rambling Boy is a story of legacies, of men and women, times, and places that have made this state what it is today. From a history of Taylors hometown, Fort Davis, to stories about the first man wounded in the Texas Revolution, (who was an African American), to accounts of outlaw Sam Bass and an explanation of Hill Country Christmases, Taylor has searched every corner of the state for untold histories.Taylors background as a former curator at the Smithsonian National Museum becomes apparent in his attention to detail: Roosevelts Rough Riders, artists, architects, criminals, the founder of Neiman Marcus, and the famous horned frog Old Rip all make appearances as quintessential Texans. Lonn Taylors unique narrative voice is personal. As he points out in the foreword, it is the stories of Texans themselves, of their grit and eccentricities, that have brought the past into the present . . . the two seem to me to be bound together by stories. Peoplereal Texansare the focus of the essays, making Texas, My Texas a rite of passage for anyone who claims Texan heritage. There are just a few things every good Texan knows, like the fact that it is illegal to pick bluebonnets along the highway, or that the Menger Hotel bar is modeled after the one in the House of Lords in London. Taylor points out with his usual wit that it is not, in fact, illegal to pick any of the six varieties of bluebonnets that grow throughout our state, and that few Texans would know that the bar is modeled after the one in the House of Lords, as few Texans are Lords. These are just a few examples of Taylors knowledge of Texas and his passion for its citizens.

I like cozies, historical fic and historical mysteries, and romance the most! Also looking for suggestions of fun things to do with an 11 year old! 2 months is a long time so will definitely need ideas 😂

No words

Everyday: I , my daughter (a school employee), my son and grandson are in separate public school buildings… the last lockdown we were all locked down… online threats… teachers I love you - my heart is broken… Texas teachers sending so much light.

So weary.

It's 18 kids now.....reportedly......so far..

Hooked_on_books And we never do anything. We make sure as many people as possible can access guns, then we ring our hands when they mow down a bunch of innocents. Then we change NOTHING while waiting for it to happen again. There are more guns per capita in the US than anywhere else in the world. We are radical outliers when it comes to guns but many Americans think we‘re “normal.” There‘s nothing normal about this. I‘m so angry. Again. 2y
GingerAntics @Hooked_on_books right? You hear these nuts talk about “it‘s been proven time and again taking away guns makes this worse” and I can‘t helping thinking these idiots really don‘t know how proof works. This ONLY happens here and it doesn‘t have to. 🙄 2y
Hooked_on_books @GingerAntics And the whole, “the only thing that can stop a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun” garbage. Ask the dead security guard in Buffalo how that one works. 2y
GingerAntics @Hooked_on_books or those two cops that were shot in Texas. Luckily they‘ll go home to their families. Plenty of other “good guys with guns” haven‘t. So ridiculous. I wonder how many of teachers were armed. Thats a newish thing in Texas. 🙄 Nothing better than more guns in schools. 2y
Hooked_on_books @GingerAntics Yeah, especially if the shooter is a kid they know. We should really be asking teachers to shoot a kid they know? There goes their mental health, permanently. And that‘s beside all the safety issues more guns in schools would mean. So much lunacy. 2y
GingerAntics @Hooked_on_books exactly!!! Then again, they tend to believe the solution to mental health is more Jesus and then even more Jesus. They don‘t really care about mental health. They don‘t really care about physical health, either. 🙄 I mean, just think of all those kids who had to be picked up at that convention Center yesterday. Those poor kids are totally messed up now. 2y
TheBookHippie @Hooked_on_books I am so so so angry. We do nothing. Ever. 2y
Hooked_on_books @TheBookHippie The hypocrisy of forcing women to carry unwanted pregnancies to term then doing nothing to protect those kids once they‘re born makes my blood boil. 2y
TheBookHippie @Hooked_on_books I just cannot … I just dropped my grandson and son at their schools - my daughter is administrative assistant at the middle school -I‘m heading into my elementary after I purchase gallons of coffee curbside for teachers and all of us who haven‘t slept and have no right to our own bodies or to keep our students safe. Madness. They don‘t care about life. It‘s all power and control. Always has been. 2y

Hey littens! I have a non-bookish question. Who lives in Austin, TX or surrounding areas? Lucas and I are 99% sure that we're moving to Austin this spring, but we don't know where the good areas are to live.

We moved to Boise without ever visiting it, and ended up in a really bad area. Sorry for the non-book post, but I also feel like you guys would be good to ask! 😊

Megabooks I‘ve moved a lot as an adult! Good luck! Sorry I don‘t know Austin. 4y
Rachel.Rencher @Megabooks Thank you! We've been in Boise for 3 years now, and really only came because it was in our home state but we really haven't loved it since day 1. Time for an adventure. 😍 4y
tpixie @Soubhiville do you live in / around Austin? 4y

Soubhiville I love just north of Austin. Feel free to email me: magicbelly@Gmail. We love it here, and I can put you in touch with a terrific realtor who can help you figure out where to find the best home for you (even if you‘re looking for a rental.) 4y
Scochrane26 I have a friend who isn‘t on litsy who lives in Austin. I can ask her, but I know there are several Littens from Austin who can answer. 4y
Soubhiville Thanks @tpixie 😊. 4y
Rachel.Rencher @Soubhiville Oh my gosh, that would be fabulous! Thank you so much. 😊🙌 I'll send you an email soon! 4y

Eyelit Yes, I live in Austin. It‘ll really come down to how much you can easily spend. The housing/rental market is kinda nuts here. I can give you a little low down of the different areas if you want to email me. (lleyelit at the gmail). I have an awesome realtor I can recommend if you like. 4y

Our Aunt and Uncle have lost their home and vehicles in the flooding, they've been rescued and are safe. Things can be replaced, people can not be. Waco is preparing shelters and donations. Everyone is eager to help. It makes my heart so full. I feel like we've been so bombarded with negativity lately, it's refreshing to see people coming together to help and support one another. We are so much more than the America we see on TV.

Sophoclessweetheart I'm so sorry. That's awful, but at least they are safe and well. My thoughts are with you x 7y

Prayers to everyone in Texas, my heart hurts from the devastation. 🇺🇸♥️🇺🇸 7y
