I haven't been finding time to read much for months as I'm caring for someone with vascular dementia round the clock.
Desperately needing a bit of self care / downtime so going to ease myself in with an old friend.... Probably my 8th time reading this novel since it was published in 1993

Leftcoastzen Hugs to you.Caregiving is hard . 2y

I am posting one book per day from my extensive to-be-read collection. No description and providing no reason for wanting to read it, I just do. Some will be old, some will be new. Don‘t judge me - I have a lot of books. Join the fun if you want.
This is day 219 #bookstoread #tbrpile #bookstagram

I finished this tonight, with #Cordélia on my lap, while trying to ignore the talking heads on TV. A coming of age story with a bit of mystery, a bit of a love story, and a huge dose of Scottish language and scenery. I really liked it.

Continuing my TBR project:
This is one the oldest selection on my TBR list - Originally added November 5, 2015.

Basically, this is a coming of age story. It is set in a fictional village outside of Glasgow, Scotland. The main character is a boy named Prentice. It is also a bit of a mystery because while Prentice is trying to “find himself“ he is also trying to find out what happened to his Uncle Rory who mysteriously disappeared.

I read this mainly for Peter Capaldi reasons (he plays Uncle Rory in the miniseries) and found it to be very very good (although I was less crazy about the occasional sex scene -- I had to squint-read at those points). The sort of book that benefits from a weekend or a vacation to read it on.

Loved this! Wasn't what I was expecting at all, having previously read the wasp factory, it was a brilliant coming of age story - family disagreements, love and death. Finished on a packed, smelly train back south - nothing pretty about my view!

Now @TrishB @Libby1 @Balibee146 this was one of our #reading1001 books.... Who shall I send it onto now?!

TrishB That‘s a timely reminder to read the next one I‘ve had off @Libby1 for ages! Not sure who it goes to next sorry! I loved this book 💕 6y

After that.... if no other takers I'll take this for a welcome revisit .... Must have read it a dozen times... Used to read every year but its been a while 📖👍 6y
jhod @Balibee146 oh no, sounds rubbish! Here's to a much better 2019! Great, I will send on soon - think it must go you to Libby, Libby to Trish, Trish to me, me to you... don't worry - we have all been a bit sh*t! 6y
Libby1 Hi, @jhod , @Balibee146 , @TrishB - I haven‘t received anything from this exchange yet! 🤣 Looking forward to this whenever it‘s my turn. 😊 6y

1. It is a bit dreich in Scotland (grey, threatening rain)
2. Romance and Chick Lit
3. Read, relax, dogwalks on the beach and visit historic sites (for me) and waterparks (for my boys)
4. Red brick and brownish
5. Pride and Prejudice and The Crow Road have joint first
#HumpDayPost @mindea

Lcsmcat I love the word “dreich!” I can see so many uses for it. How do you pronounce it? Also, The Crow Road has been on my TBR for awhile now. I think I need to bump it up. 7y
Balibee146 @Lcsmcat it is a fab word.... Dree-ch.... With the ch said like a Scottish person would say Loch if your throat can manage it lol xx 7y

What an absolutely bloody brilliant book!! Family drama, deaths, mysteries, love, life and the fantastic Scottish countryside. Great political and musical asides.
I can see why this book has all the love from other Litsy friends @Balibee146 @DeborahSmall @arlenefinnigan
Read as part of #1001bookstoread - fellow group members who haven‘t yet read I hope you love it as much as me.

arlenefinnigan Great isn't it? Also possibly the funniest sex scene in 20th century literature 😉 7y

Christine11 Lovely cover ! 7y
Balibee146 @Caroline2 it was.... And it was bloody awful.... Dreadful casting of most of the mains.... Honourable mention to Peter Capaldi as Rory though.... Avoid! This book has one of my favourite phrases from Banks 'the sea was a taste'.... Unfortunately I'm pretty sure it's in there twice lol. I also know where all the typos are in the typesetting #nerd #obsessed 😉 7y
TrishB @Balibee146 maybe they‘ve disappeared in this version!! 7y
JazzFeathers Love that cover 😍 7y
Balibee146 @TrishB maybe 😉 but if each chapter heading has a wee design same as the cover it's probably still the original typesetting. I have had several copies over the last 20+ years and the innards were always the same even when they changed the cover for a spell. Looking forward to it is - like meeting an old friend... Hope you enjoy it! 😘 7y
Balibee146 @Caroline2 Oooops sorry just realised I send you said you loved the series.... Wasn't trying to be rude lol... Just a diehard novel fan.... Glad you enjoyed it 💗💗 7y
TrishB @Balibee146 loving it so far! 7y
DeborahSmall @Balibee146 @TrishB such a great book! It could be time for a reread. Enjoy 😘 7y

This is not my normal sort of read and some of the descriptions were a bit much but in keeping with the tone of the book. The story however is so good. I really enjoyed it.
