I expected this to be more thriller-like than it was. After a real slow start and after having gotten used to all that confusing name dropping the plot gets absolutely fascinating. From the beginning of the part set in Munich I really loved it. I learned a good deal but sadly can‘t make up a well-sounded opinion because I know too few about all this.

Personally, I completely understand Chamberlain but it seems the vast majority criticises him.

As you see, I was sensitive enough to cut vegetables for tomorrow‘s lunch. Also, I had dinner – but mostly just because I bought cheese 🧀 that I imagined to be very tasty and was eager to have a bite of.

So I switched devices, from book to audiobook. It‘s fascinating. I‘m a bit more than 70 % through and now I feel that the plot _really_ gets going, but folks, is this complicated with all the history and the personnel or is it just me❓🤔

I am more than a bit sad but I definitely couldn‘t manage to squeeze in some pages in my current Jojo Moyes. I‘m quite sure you all know that feeling when you‘re already looking forward to coming home and caring for your book the moment you sit on your bedside in the morning.

Whatever, I try to focus on today‘s good things – less pain in my shoulder, wonderful book hints and conversations here on Litsy – and treat me with my audiobook.

My last blurb didn‘t have enough characters to express how much I look forward to this one. I‘m sure it will be a good commute companion that makes getting up in the middle of the night worth it. 🤷🏽‍♀️

To be honest, I don‘t know very much (nothing) about the conference that gives its title to the book but I hope that it will be like it was in Ken Follett‘s “Titans”-trilogy, that it‘s so well written that I will learn while listening.

New Year, fresh audiobook.

My last one was kind of “used” because I started it in 2019.

As often, I stumbled across this one accidentally and put it on hold – just to be surprised that it‘s available so soon.
More than 20 years ago, a co-apprentice borrowed me “Fatherland”. It deeply impressed me and for years, I was sure, that Harris must be German, how else could he write about German history with such knowledge and creativity❓🤔

Loved this book, which really caught the atmosphere around the possible outbreak of war in September 1938. This showed how close it was to war, & how badly prepared for war at this stage the U.K. was. You wonder how things will have turned out if this had happened, Hitler went on record in 1945 saying they should have gone to war in 1938. You have to make your own judgement as to whether this was great leadership from Chamberlain or bad!

This one takes place in September 1938 covering events that almost led to the start of WWII. Not know too much about these events so keen to develop my knowledge.

As other reviewers have pointed out, it has a slow start and I sometimes found myself frustrated that all the action is driven by Oxbridge males writing endless memos. It's a bit jarring reading about historical figures at times. The story of how a British diplomat and a Nazi who are trying to prevent Chamberlain from signing the Munich treaty so that Britain can avoid war does pick up the pace; and its not a bad thriller.

I expected this book to be a historical thriller, but I found it to be less a thriller than a study of the Munich Conference. Harris seems particularly interested in exploring the character and motivations of Neville Chamberlain. The book made me want to read more nonfiction, historical accounts of the conference. This is an enjoyable book, but it Is more a character study than a page-turning thriller.

This is a spy book set against the "peace in our time" munich conference. The spy plot is ok, no big twist ala Conclave or The Ghost, but for me the fascinating thing is the feeling of being there. A thrilling snapshot in time to a era when Chamberlain wasnt branded as a cowardly appeaser. Harris it would appear has a grudging admiration for a man out of his time making the best of a bad job and giving us an extra year to prepare for the conflict.

I don't read a lot of historical fiction, but this was a fascinating account of Neville Chamberlain's efforts to avoid war at all costs as Hitler threatened to invade Czechoslovakia in 1938. It was remarkably suspenseful, especially since the outcome is never in doubt.

One of Harris's strengths is showing how modern day thinking and trends are in fact seen throughout history, from Cicero to Dreyfuss to Munich. Are we condemned to repeat history ad nauseum?

Harris depicts the isolation of great responsibility with a simple paragraph. He sets the scene with the first few sentences and then slices to the heart of the matter with the last sentence. A little encapsulation of good writing.🤔👍🏻

Historical fiction at its best. It took place in a well known time in World War Two, the main characters interact with famous and infamous people. But it adds so much to the story and makes history even more engaging.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 1930s Munich agreement is the backdrop for two old friends to play some spy games defending their ideals. Character development - beautifully done for the lead. But the details on the German side of the story seemed lacking to me. I loved the restraint the author exercised when describing those high tension moments. Perfectly done. The book ends on the brink of war and the two friends are left with their decided paths for the war to come.

Reading another WW2 based fiction while I clean my apartment. Cleaning made tolerable by a good audiobook. This is my first Robert Harris book and it‘s very well paced in the first half.

Listening to the PBS News Hour interview with Robert Harris. This sounds like a great read.

Our library has a great idea for February- a blind date with a book! This was such fun to choose a surprise and to unwrap it! I haven‘t read Munich before and it‘s definitely not a Valentine‘s read but I‘m willing to give it a try 😊📖😊

I‘ve been getting more and more into historical fiction the last year or so. This was extremely well executed. Parts of it felt like a well written history textbook.

Another excellent novel of historical fiction from Robert Harris, the master. Let‘s be honest, it always interesting reading about Hitler and WWII. Harris‘s writing benefits from his excellent and detailed research. He‘s once again brought a moment in history alive. I loved it.

Lovely turn of phrase used here. Describes the sense of doom of the situation and simaultaneously conveys the lack of direction felt by the protagonists. 😮

Excellent historical fiction book. Feels like you were there when the world was watching to see if peace would be kept. The meeting between the key players in WWII met for the last time in Munich 1938. Even though we now the outcome, the author manages to keep the tension. So I didn‘t manage to finish the book last night. I was out like a light before 2 am. Oh well. Maybe next time. I‘ve recorded my place in my notebook so hopefully I will get back to it!

I have to return this beauty of a book tomorrow. So while a snow storm paints the town white and fluffy, I‘m snuggling up with a coffee and doing some time travelling! Here‘s hoping I can finish it!
