Votes for Women!
Votes for Women!: American Suffragists and the Battle for the Ballot | Winifred Conkling
23 posts | 7 read | 19 to read
On August 18, 1920, American women finally won the right to vote. Ratification of the 19th Amendment was the culmination of an almost eighty-year fight in which some of the fiercest, most passionate women in history marched, protested, and sometimes broke the law in to achieve this huge leap toward equal rights. In this expansive yet personal volume, author Winifred Conkling covers not only the suffragists' achievements and politics but also the private journeys that fueled their passion and led them to become women's champions. From Susan B. Anthony and Elizabeth Cady Stanton, who founded the suffrage movement at the 1848 Seneca Falls convention; to Victoria Woodhull, the first female candidate for president; to Sojourner Truth and her famous speech, "Ain't I a Woman?"; to Alice Paul, who was arrested and force-fed in prison, Conkling combines thorough research with page-turning storytelling to bring the battle for the right to vote to vivid life. Votes for Women! also explores the movement's often powerful, sometimes difficult relationship with the temperance and abolition movements, and takes unflinching look at some of the uglier moments in the fight for the women's vote. Votes for Women! is a mesmerizing read perfect for fans of propulsive narrative nonfiction stories like Most Dangerous and The Family Romanov.

I missed reading this during the 19th amendment's centenary, but finishing it on an historic Inauguration Day seems fitting. Not only is this an interesting history of the fight for universal suffrage, it's also a look at the challenges of political action, the risks of pushing too hard or not hard enough and of being divided by the myth of the zero-sum game. The racist words of Anthony and Stanton are disappointing to read but unsurprising.

Suet624 I haven't read this one, but your review is perfect. Politics is a crazy-making thing when you're trying to change society. 4y
ImperfectCJ @Suet624 It was really interesting to read in light of the protests this summer and the police reaction to the attack on the Capitol. So many of the same arguments are recycled. 4y

This was a great overview of the women‘s suffrage movement in the U.S. I listened to the audiobook and wish I had taken some notes. There‘s a pretty big cast of characters. I like that this did not ignore the racism and biases that were part of the fight for the 19th Amendment passed. It‘s a true picture, including the flaws. The parts about the anti-suffrage women were interesting & sounded much like those who were against the ERA decades later.

I‘m continuing to listen to the audiobook of this history of the women‘s suffrage movement in the U.S. In one of today‘s chapters I learned about Victoria Woodhull, the first woman to run for president, even before the 19th Amendment passed. She certainly had an interesting life, with some beliefs that were very outside the mainstream for the time. I‘d like to learn more about her.

A new listen for Nonfiction November. Today I learned about Elizabeth Cady Stanton‘s childhood, during which all of her brothers died during childhood, and her father told her she should have been a boy. This wasn‘t unusual then, but it sparked her interest in learning about how women were disadvantaged by law. I hope this book covers the ways the women‘s suffrage movement excluded black women who were also fighting for rights.

Thanks to @Riveted_Reader_Melissa and her #NonFictionChallenge2020 I discovered an awesome book/audio about the US Suffragist Movement. I “met” so many brilliant women who wouldn‘t be silenced or bullied by the government nor stifled from the ignorance of those who opposed them. This is a wonderful book for young budding feminists or the more mature gals and guys too 😉We can all benefit from a dose of #GirlPower 💪🏼💄

Riveted_Reader_Melissa Sounds excellent!! 5y
Cinfhen It really was @Riveted_Reader_Melissa there was SO MUCH I didn‘t know 🙈 I was surprised by all the fractures within the movements. It seems many individuals had their own agendas often at the expense of the other groups.

5y
TrishB That‘s how it was in U.K. too - one faction supporting non violence/confrontation and others supporting direct action. Also lots of splits with rich/poor women. Not one movement. I think in US there was also quite a race split? 5y
Cinfhen Yes, lots of “politics” involved ☹️some wanted just to focus on woman‘s right to vote, others were hesitant to allow black woman to march with them, some were focused on equality for all ( black males included) or some strictly wanted rights for women in regards to education, child rights and ability to own property and keep their wages. There were SO many issues @TrishB and shocking how long it took women to get the rights to these basic things (edited) 5y
TrishB I know! In our lifetimes. ☹️ 5y

Getting to know more about some feisty females; Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Lucretia Mott, Victoria Woodhull , Susan B. Anthony & Sojourner Truth. #AintIAWoman 🙌🏻❣️💪🏽

Hollie Victoria Woodhull was a friend of the woman I wrote my thesis on- they were all Free Lovers. It‘s pretty cool that Woodhull ran for president decades before women achieved equality in voting! 5y
Cinfhen This book is so fascinating/ I had never heard of Victoria Woodhull before 🙈 @Hollie and I‘m learning how many “distinguished” men were dogs 🐶 (edited) 5y

Cinfhen It‘s definitely easy listening /reading @TrishB but it‘s infuriating to realize how women were treated in the 1800‘s!!!!!! 🤬🤬😡 5y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @Cinfhen Yes it is! So infuriating! 5y
