Soundless | Richelle Mead
A NEW YORK TIMES BEST SELLERFrom Richelle Mead, the #1 internationally bestselling author of Vampire Academy and Bloodlines, comes a breathtaking new fantasy perfect for fans of Leigh Bardugo, Laini Taylor and Sabaa Tahir. "Fans of characters like Rose Hathaway and Sydney Sage will flock to this impressive stand-alone novel."--Booklist For as long as Fei can remember, there has been no sound in her village, where rocky terrain and frequent avalanches prevent residents from self-sustaining. Fei and her people are at the mercy of a zipline that carries food up the treacherous cliffs from Beiguo, a mysterious faraway kingdom. When villagers begin to lose their sight, deliveries from the zipline shrink and many go hungry. Feis home, the people she loves, and her entire existence is plunged into crisis, under threat of darkness and starvation. But soon Fei is awoken in the night by a searing noise, and sound becomes her weapon. Richelle Mead takes readers on a triumphant journey from the peak of Feis jagged mountain village to the valley of Beiguo, where a startling truth and an unlikely romance will change her life forever....From the Hardcover edition.

This is a dystopian style story where they are stuck at the top of the mountain mainly mining to get food rations from the “line keeper“. Everyone here is unable to hear and they are now slowly losing their sight as well. Fei suddenly gains her hearing after a dream and she finds herself on an adventure down the mountain. She and her companion find more than they bargained for at the base of the mountain, and need to hide that they “cannot hear“.

Though, not necessarily a ride or entertainment at Epcot, you can go to China, the location of Mulan. Also, I did spot the Mulan character actress!

Anyone looking forward to the live action Mulan? Heard the new Christina Aguilera song? It‘s beautiful! https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=Qo8gX1Evay8

Butterfinger I can't wait. I will definitely miss Mushy, but I love the ancient story. 5y
CrowCAH @Butterfinger it does look epic, with lots of cool fighting stunts! And I‘m interested to hear how Harry Gregson-Williams performs the score from Jerry Goldsmith‘s original. 5y

An okay read. I liked it in the beginning, but found myself struggling toward the end. I would have liked more world building and more fantasy in the plot.

For a stand-alone fantasy that‘s quite short, this is a very unique story with enough world building and character development to enjoy! I really liked Fei and really related to her as an artist and the fantasy element was really unique. I really liked the ending! I did wish there were a sequel even if it didn‘t follow the same characters but took place in the same world but for a stand-alone this is really good!

... And a scream of sorrow or rage...well, that is entirely different thing. That comes from a darker place, from the depths of our souls, and when we scream in those times, because we are sad or angry, there is a terrible knowledge that accompanies it, that we are giving voice to our emotions, to what is simply too big for our hearts to contain.

Won this book last year at a book club meeting, but have yet to read it. I love Richelle Mead‘s books, but I heard so many bad things about this one, that I‘m kinda scared to read it and be disappointed. Has anyone here read it? If so, what were your thoughts?

A quick light read that weaves Pixiu legends with the struggles of a mountain town. When the Pixiu leave the mountain the village becomes isolated and subjected to the King. They only receive food if they mine. The metals in the mine are toxic and the town loses its hearing and starts losing its vision as well. What will happen to the villagers if they can no longer see to mine or if the mine runs dry? Find this at your local library to find out!

I decided to start my YA binge with Soundless. I've always loved mythology and folklore and took as many classes in undergrad as I could on the subject. So while this book has very mixed reviews I'm loving it for the spinoff of an ancient Chinese tale. Anyways it's a bad weather day so perfect for a book, a hot Albuquerque Turkey sandwich and chips and salsa. #booknlunch

I have to admit, I did like the second half of the book when things really got going and I found out the reasons behind what was happening in the village. The writing is a bit dull, however, and the first half of the book moved fairly slowly. I wish this had been better.

This book is so beautiful 😍 I heard it's not very good though 😞Any thoughts on this one? Worth the read?

silentrequiem I didn't get very far before I DNF it. 7y
QueenOfWands I was disappointed in how the story came together. Really interesting world and characters, though. I don't regret reading it. 7y
silentrequiem If you want an East Asian-inspired YA fantasy, try Cindy Pon. I haven't read this but have heard it's good from people I trust. Also, it's actually written by an author of Asian descent. 7y

This was actually my first Owlcrate book. I was beyond excited to read this because it is based on Chinese folklore. This book delivered in a great way and introduced me to Chinese folklore, which I have never had the chance to study.

One of my goals this year is to read more books with POC main characters and characters with disabilities. This gets a solid 3/5: Great and UNIQUE premise for a YA fantasy, but the overall execution, plot, character dev just wasn't there for me. I would still recommend, but I just didn't love it as much as I wanted to.

First and foremost, I liked that this book has a diverse heroine and deals with disabilities. I see where Mead was going with this. I like that she tried. There's a lot of little details that I applaud her doing that make her characters a little more memorable.
With thaaat saaaiid, I wasn't super into this book. I don't know, it's not that I was bored, per say, it just wasn't thrilling.

This book has so many great things about it. It was very unique and at times I couldn't put the book down. But it took a while for me to get there. I feel like there could have been more of a build up of certain elements in the story. It left me feeling kinda blah.

It was an interesting idea but it needed more work. I felt like I was reading an outline of a book instead of an actual book. It was okay enough when reading but whenever I put it down, I had zero motivation to pick it back up.

Finally: my first Richelle Mead 👉🏻 I thought it was pretty good! Pros: I like the Chinese folklore / mythology spin + the ease of a standalone is very nice. Cons: I wasn't *totally 100% connected to place, characters, or the romance. Kim Mai Guest narrates the audio and does a great job with it!

Peddler410 You have me intrigued by the Chinese connection. My daughter just finished 1st grade in a Chinese Immersion program and I'm always looking for books with a connection. 8y
