Wilderness Essays | John Muir
20 posts | 5 read | 13 to read
Part of John Muir's appeal to modern readers is that he not only explored the American West and wrote about its beauties but also fought for their preservation. His successes dot the landscape and are evident in all the natural features that bear his name: forests, lakes, trails, and glaciers. Here collected are some of Muir's finest wilderness essays, ranging in subject matter from Alaska to Yellowstone, from Oregon to the High Sierra. This book is part of a series that celebrates the tradition of literary naturalists--writers who embrace the natural world as the setting for some of our most euphoric and serious experiences. These books map the intimate connections between the human and the natural world. Literary naturalists transcend political boundaries, social concerns, and historical milieus; they speak for what Henry Beston called the "other nations" of the planet. Their message acquires more weight and urgency as wild places become increasingly scarce.

#WondrousWednesday @Eggs

@Trashcanman Thanks for the tag George!

1. I wanted to be a Naturalist for as long as I can remember. When I was 3 or 4 I had already decided that I would be a nature show host.

2. No snooze for me, I sleep through my alarm bad enough already.

3. Mottos are for people who remember things. I just try to be kind.

4. Green in nature, grey for clothing.

I‘ve heard it said, “That if only we had the faith of a mustard seed, then we could move mountains.” While I am unsure about the power of faith, I know we have damaged the air, sea, waterways, and land with our power.

#QuotsyMay19 Day 25: #Hike.
We did trek a fair bit while chasing waterfalls in Bali. It was pretty steep and quite scary for my city-bred teenager. We met an elderly uncle along the path, possibly European, with a huge bloody gash on his knee, but he continued going on, moving forward, with grace and good humour. There is a lesson to be learned there. Onwards, always moving forward. #Hike!

Love the writing of John Muir.
P. 118 “...for going to the mountain is like going home.”

#friyayintro @howjessreads

This is me at one of my favorite hiking spots in Shenandoah National Park. I took a random Wednesday off of work a couple of weeks ago to enjoy the last bit of warm weather. Hiking is one of my favorite things to do!

Me: Oh that looks fascinating (Infinite Spaces). Hey, new author (Kate Atkinson) 😊 ! Oooh, I wanted that (The Lost Garden). Ooooh, and that (Beginning of the world). Oh, I REALLY wanted that, and in that edition too (John Muir‘s Essays)!!! 😊😊😊

Book purity at its best with thanks to @shawnmooney for a fantastic Secret Santa all the way from Japan ( #LittensGoneGlobal ). 😊😊😊😊

Found these pretty hardcover editions of nature books at a local gift shop today... drool. (They also had Walden, Leaves of Grass, and a few others I forget now.)

Bailedbailed

Regretfully bailing on this one. It was too descriptive and I found my mind wandering. Now I need another book of essays for the @bookriot #readharderchallenge. Any suggestions?

Redheadrambles Yeah still looking for a book for this task as well 8y
Theresa I bailed on my 1st essays selection too. It was a David Foster Wallace collection that I was slogging through. I bailed in favor of David Sedaris & flew through it in addition to thoroughly enjoying it. I read Barrel Fever, but there are several options, all of which are now on my TBR. 😄 8y
hike.read.repeat @Theresa thanks. I'll look into it. 8y

After sleeping a few hours, I stole quietly out of camp, and climbed the mountain...it seemed a sad thing that any part of so precious a night had been lost in sleep. 🌌 (pg 23)
