Armored Saint
Armored Saint | Myke Cole
"Cole weaves a fantasy world that feels comfortably familiar, then goes to places you'd never expect. You won't stop turning pages until the stunning finish." --Peter V. BrettMyke Cole, star of CBS's Hunted and author of the Shadow Ops series, debuts the Sacred Throne epic fantasy trilogy with The Armored Saint, a story of religious tyrants, arcane war-machines, and underground resistance that will enthrall epic fantasy readers of all ages.In a world where any act of magic could open a portal to hell, the Order insures that no wizard will live to summon devils, and will kill as many innocent people as they must to prevent that greater horror. After witnessing a horrendous slaughter, the village girl Heloise opposes the Order, and risks bringing their wrath down on herself, her family, and her village.

This was just an OK book for me. Sadly. Maybe it's because I was expecting something differently. It took for me too long until the story really started. Or maybe it was because I didn't really like the narrator of the audio book. But I never really got into the story, and the characters never came close to me. Even though bad things are happening, I stayed untouched. Therefore, I'm not going to actively continue this trilogy.

PuddleJumper That's great! One off your TBR pile 2y

This is my number 36 for February #roll100 - I'm still going for only one book in the challenge, because this morning I felt totally stressed out by my reading plans... and it would be no fun like this... As soon as I feel like it, I'll go for two.

Our library only has the audio book, so I need to hurry up with the one I'm listening to right now and hope, that I'll make it in time - February is just to short...😅

@puddlejumper

PuddleJumper Ooft, yeah, do as much or as little as you want. You don't want it to become a chore 2y
Jari-chan @PuddleJumper Thank you for understanding 😊 Yes, reading should not be a chore! 2y

Heloise is a frustrating character & a lot of what happens is her fault but I don‘t feel like it‘s on purpose, she doesn‘t agree with what‘s going on. Now I will say I am confused as to who the ‘bad guys‘ are in the series, I don‘t know if it‘s the The Order or the Wizards, the end just left me confused about that but I like that. It makes me want to read more. Also Brother Tone was a really good bad guy & I liked him more than I should have haha

Sweetkokoro @TheAromaofBooks This is book #13 on my #bookspinbingo board 4y
Sweetkokoro Also I am aware of the recent claims of Myke Cole and his behavior towards women. I bought this entire series before all that came to light, so he already had my money. I still want to read them though as that was the purpose of buying them. It‘s the whole separating the art from the creator thing. 4y

Has anyone read this book or the second one? Worldbuilders has a special deal—preorder the third and get 20% off if you buy all 3. The story looks like an intriguing premise—just not sure if it‘s worth buying them (vs. library).

Thoughts?

The violence of this book seemed real, people got tired! A young woman drove a mecha! But there are things about this book I have questions about, mainly the lack of female figures in the town. The main character has a mom and a girl she loves. But...that‘s it. Who are the other women and girls in her life? She‘s surrounded by men. Women exist at a remove. Maybe it‘s her age, or her society, or how close she is to her father.

It was decent and entertaining, which is a totally legitimate reason to tell a story. However, I was not satisfied with the plot twist and the ending.

I was able to read 15 books this month, which is pretty good for my reading pace. It‘s hard to pick a March favorite. I enjoyed most of what I read. The Elementals (audiobook), The Armored Saint, and Ghost Summer are probably my top 3 favorites for March. I‘m also loving this new manga series, The Promised Neverland, which is a dark fantasy that borders on horror. I‘m excited to grab volume 3 when it‘s released on Tuesday!

Andrew65 Well done! 🙌🙌 6y
brutalbookworm Omg Mister Tender‘s Girl was so amazing! I got that 2 months ago as an e-arc and flew through it 6y
BekahB @brutalbookworm I‘m really interested in what Wilson writes next! 6y

BekahB @parasolofdoom I really loved those stories! There are a couple I already want to re-read. 6y

I enjoyed this book a lot even if the MC was sometimes written like she was 10 instead of 16. It really reminded me of Dragon Age at times (a lot of "Fuck The Chantry" moments to this story). Definitely excited for the second book.

Gonna speed through this little guy before starting on a big series. Excited, cause I'm getting big Dragon Age vibes from it. 😁

Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ of 5 ⭐️s

A pretty (grim)dark story to be sure, but it‘s got a tiny bit of hope in its heart that I really quite like. Also the world has shades of Dragon Age to it, so anyone who‘s played those games is going to recognise certain elements here. Villains aren‘t as complex as I‘d like, but hopefully that‘ll change in the sequels, which I‘m deffo looking forward to :D.

Excited to run down the end of the year with this ARC :D. I haven't read anything by Myke Cole, but given the buzz I've heard about his stuff I doubt I'll go wrong with this selection.

Thanks to Tor Books for the ARC XD!

I've been awful at Litsy these past few weeks. 😕

Currently reading an ARC of a fantasy novella by an author I haven't read before. But I follow him on Twitter and he's hilarious and smart and extremely good looking. I have a major crush.😊

xicanti He was one of the nicest authors I met at my last BEA! 6y

Galley brag! 😝

RealBooks4ever Aww, Myke Cole! 😻😻😻 7y
Lola I loved the Reading Lives episode @bookriot's Jeff O'Neal did with Myke Cole two years ago. Sadly, that podcast is no more, but if you can access the archives, it's ep 39. 7y
Lola @Liberty do you know how to access old eps? I can't open it in my podcast app. So many good ones in there! You're ep 28! I think you should work your @bookriot magic and make those old eps accessible again. SUCH a good show! 7y
