The Library Book
The Library Book | Alberto Manguel
13 posts | 1 read | 4 to read
In pre Revolutionary War America, libraries were member-driven collections for the elite; it was not until 1790 that Benjamin Franklin helped to establish the first public lending library. Throughout the subsequent centuries the library has evolved, but always remained central to the cultural life of the nation. Thomas R. Schiff s photographs trace the history of the library through aesthetic and style while featuring legendary architects such as Charles F. McKim; Shepley, Rutan and Coolidge; and I. M. Pei. The Library Book beautifully captures the shifting architectural styles and missions of the library in sweeping 360-degree panoramas from the very earliest American libraries to the modernist masterpieces of Louis I. Kahn and others. In his introductory essay, acclaimed author and library lover Alberto Manguel considers the story of the library in America, its evolving architecture and cultural role, and how the American model reflects the archetypal idea of the universal library. Including brief descriptions of each unique library, this book brings bibliophiles into one hundred libraries across the nation."

📚So many! Narrowing down to top 5: The Strand, Left Bank Books (St. Louis), Magers & Quinn, Prairie Light Books, Barnes & Noble Zona Rosa (not the best B&N, but it's literally 5 minutes away from my house & right next to a Granite City. If it ever closed, I'd be devastated.)
📚📚My favorite library purely in terms of aesthetics is the central branch of the KC MO with the giant book spines. Fave overall is Woodneath branch of Mid-continent.

vivastory 📚📚📚 Thankful for snow days for work! 2y
readordierachel The BN near me closed in the fall of last year. We still have Powell's, of course, but it was still such a bummer 2y

vivastory @readordierachel It's always disappointing when a bookstore or library closes, especially when it's convenient 2y

My first sighting of a little free library! 😊

Ruthiella Find anything you liked? 😃 3y
Mommamanzi Yay!!! Ours goes up next week! 3y
BiblioLitten @Ruthiella I guess I was a little nervous to take anything. If it was closer to my house I would have. 😅 3y

BiblioLitten @Mommamanzi I plan to do that in the future. Please do share pictures of yours! 😊 3y
Ruthiella Do take something if it looks good. You will make the owner of the FLL happy! 😃 3y
MoonWitch94 Nice!!! It‘s so full! How lovely 3y
Soubhiville Yay! I hope you found something good! 3y
Soubhiville @BiblioLitten never be nervous to take something! That‘s what it‘s there for, and as a LFL owner I can tell you it makes us really happy to see books go to new homes! 3y
BiblioLitten @Soubhiville @Ruthiella Now that I think of it, that is what I was supposed to do! I can always go again, and next time I‘ll share the book on Litsy. Thanks guys💕🥰 3y
marleed I love the LFLs near me. I often find books there when I walk. I keep a few books in my car so that when I drive a LFL from which I recently borrowed, I can donate a book or several. Sometimes there is no room in the LFL for my donation but if there is no rain forecasted for a day or two I‘ll leave my stack at the foot of the LFL. 3y
BiblioLitten @marleed Keeping the books in the car is a good idea. I‘ll keep an eye out for more. 🙂 3y
tokorowilliamwallace There were somewhere around 13+ in my vicinity (10ish mile radius)---that I found, there were probably more---when I lived in Maryland, 4 of those within walking distance from where I lived. There's a lot I miss about living there. 2y

Beautiful coffee table books featuring amazing photos of libraries across the U.S. This photo features Ohio University‘s Alden Library...my alma mater. I spent many a night there. 🤓

I'm bad at planning my reading, even a few hours in advance but I'll be raising my library stack for #24in48

2BR02B Radiance was excellent, and I've heard wonderful things about Song of Achilles. 6y
Moray_Reads @2BR02B I read an ARC of Miller's new book Circe last year and it was fantastic so I have high hopes. And I just love Catherynne Valente 6y

Loving this beautiful book of photos of libraries. Even includes great pullout spreads like this one of the Indianapolis Public Central Library.
