The Milk Lady of Bangalore
The Milk Lady of Bangalore: An Unexpected Adventure | Shoba Narayan
12 posts | 8 read | 23 to read
When Shoba Narayan, a writer and cookbook author who had lived for years in Manhattan, moves back to Bangalore with her family, she befriends the milk lady, from whom she buys fresh milk every day. These two women from very different backgrounds bond over not only cows, considered holy in India, but also family, food, and life. After Narayan agrees to buy her milk lady a new cow (she needs one and Narayan can afford it, so why not?), they set off looking for just the right cow. What was at first a simple economic transaction becomes something much more complicated, though never without a hint of slapstick. When Narayan starts dreaming of cows, a little Ayurvedic medicine is in order. (Cow urine tablets, anyone?) When Narayan offers her surprised neighbors fresh cows milk, we learn about the place of milk in Indian culture. When Narayan wants a cow to bless her house, the spiritual and historical role that cows play in India is explored. In this charming true story about two women and the animal they share, readers are treated to an insiders of view of India. The Milk Lady of Bangalore is also a window into our universal connection to food and its sources, the intricacies of female friendship, and our relationship to all animals.

I didn't know this book was a memoir when I started it. I'm really enjoying the author's account of returning to India.

This delightful memoir is about an unlikely friendship between a journalist recently returned to her homeland of India and the woman from whom she buys milk. It's charming and surprisingly informative about the role of milk in Indian culture.

Saw @Sace and @RamsFan1963 doing this, and thought it might help me slow down my accumulation of new books.

I‘m posting one book per day from my ever-increasing TBR. No description. No explanation. Just books to read. Join the fun if you want.

Day 1.

#fromthetbrstacks

RamsFan1963 It hasn't slowed me down any lol 3y
dariazeoli @RamsFan1963 I‘m hopeful, but not counting on it either 😂 3y

In this memoir, I enjoyed all of the interesting stuff about cows in India—including milk sales, cow urine uses, purification rituals involving cows walking through apartments or using diluted manure, and what happens to bull calves. The best part, however, is the cross-societal friendship between the author and the milk lady. #Audiobook narrated by Soneela Nankani.

Who knew there were so many uses for cow urine and poo?!

After living in the US for 20 years, Shoba and her family return to India to reconnect with their roots. Shortly after moving in to their new apartment she becomes somewhat obsessed with the lady selling milk in the street - and her cows. A friendship with benefits is tentatively formed, and we begin to learn everything we could ever hope to about Cows and their “products”.

MallenNC @AmyG I wish I could read them all right now! A few more library books and then I can start. 6y
MallenNC @RebelReader Thanks! Most came from my local indie bookstore so I don‘t feel guilty about letting them pile up. 6y
Eggs Have read Janesville and After the eclipse 6y
MallenNC @Eggs How sad is After the Eclipse? I keep thinking I'm not in the mod for it, even though I've heard it's good. Janesville was on President Obama's best books of 2017 list, and I have heard it compared to Evicted, which I thought was excellent. 6y
Eggs Well, Eclipse is sad but by far not one of the saddest I ever read 6y
MallenNC @Eggs I just need to get to it, and find out for myself. Sad is ok, I just don't want misery on every page. 6y
