Ralph Waldo Emerson
Ralph Waldo Emerson: Selected Essays, Lectures and Poems | Ralph Waldo Emerson
30 posts | 3 read | 1 reading | 2 to read
A new, wide-ranging selection of Ralph Waldo Emersons most influential writings, this edition captures the essence of American Transcendentalism and illustrates the breadth of one of Americas greatest philosophers and poets. The writings featured here show Emerson as a protester against social conformity, a lover of nature, an activist for the rights of women and slaves, and a poet of great sensitivity. As explored in this volume, Emersonian thought is a unique blend of belief in individual freedom and in humility before the power of nature. I become a transparent eyeball, Emerson wrote in Nature, I am nothing; I see all; the currents of the Universal Being circulate through me; I am part or particle of God. Written over a century ago, this passage is a striking example of the passion and originality of Emersons ideas, which continue to serve as a spiritual center and an ideological base for modern thought. From the Paperback edition.

Ralph Waldo Emerson:

Don‘t be pushed by your problems. Be led by your dreams.

The only person you are destined to become is the person you decide to be.

Our greatest glory is not in never failing, but in rising up every time we fail.

from “Music” by Ralph Waldo Emerson

‘Tis not in the high stars alone,
Nor in the cup of budding flowers,
Nor in the redbreast‘s mellow tones,
Nor in the bow that smiles in showers,
But in the #mud and scum of things
There alway, alway, something sings.

GripLitGrl In the 1800's they didn't know any better 😉 & in 2018 it would just be the person behind the book covering all genders i think.😄💕 @gradcat @tina_b.ooks @loverofl 5y

Found some literary candles at Richard‘s Variety Store this morning. I wanted Jane Austen, but the scent was too flowery.

StillLookingForCarmenSanDiego I love literary candles. Good score! 6y

JanuarieTimewalker13 You just reminded me of my dream last night, thank you!! I had to find a number of authors for a reason I've forgotten and one of them was RWE...what? I said to this request...hasn't he been deceased for like 200 years? (Actually I have to look that up), and the person said yes, but he's still possible to find...lol...that is definitely a book nerd dream! Hahahahaha! And along comes your quote...This is why I love life!!! 7y

Mehso-so

Religion centered writing which isn't up my alley.
His nature writing however, is sublime. Must've been a treat to hear him speak.

Angelala007 What other books do you have multiple copies of? For me it's A Moveable Feast, The Bell Jar, The Hobbit, several of Iris Murdoch's.... 8y
Shemac77 @Angelala007 I seem to only buy multiple copies of Catcher in the Rye, Prodigal Summer, and The Little Prince. Although The Bell Jar is one of my favorites as is Hemingway. And JRR Tolkien. 8y
