Wallis in Love
Wallis in Love: The untold true passion of the Duchess of Windsor | Andrew Morton
21 posts | 12 read | 12 to read
Sunday Times bestselling author Andrew Morton reveals new information and sources that totally transform our perception of Wallis Simpson. Wallis in Love brings a fascinating new perspective on the 20th century's most controversial royal scandal. Andrew Morton's impeccable research and unerring skill for riveting storytelling combine to present a strong case for a new and startling reveal: that the woman who rocked the world with her uncompromising passion for the Prince of Wales may have fooled everyone by keeping the object of her true passion hidden away... From her relatively lowly beginnings in America - where young Wallis and her mother were dependent on her domineering and powerful Uncle Sol, to her rise through the social ranks and her determination to one day beat men at their own game - to the ultimate conquest of the Prince of Wales, Morton paints a vivid and multi-faceted picture of a compelling, ambitious and often hard-hearted woman, who may have won the jewel in the British crown but very possibly at the expense of her true happiness. Wallis in Love reveals the men Wallis truly loved, the men who broke her heart - and the hearts she broke in turn. In this vivid, fresh and frankly amazing portrait of the Duchess of Windsor, Morton draws on interviews, secret letters, diaries and never before seen or heard primary sources. From the day she was born in a ramshackle cottage in the hills to revealing what really happened the night her husband died, Morton paints a fresh and enticing portrait of the Duchess of Windsor.

Good. Shows a different side to this woman and her life. Even though this story has been told in various ways this brings a different perspective and adds to the well known story.

I knew next to nothing about Wallis Simpson before reading this. I‘d vaguely heard about the abdication of Edward VIII, but not the details. I‘d imagined a great love story, but it seems that Wallis was a bit of a social climber whilst Edward was a rather weak character & ultimately they weren‘t happy together. 3.5🌟

Kimberlone Also they were low key nazis? Highly recommend The Crown season 2 for the Edward/Wallis drama 3y
OutsmartYourShelf @Kimberlone That aspect was only briefly mentioned in this book, but yes, I think they were Nazi sympathisers to a degree. I watched S1 of The Crown but haven‘t seen S2 yet. 3y

Anyone else have a historical figure that you are fascinated about? Mine is Wallis Simpson - I don‘t know why I find her fascinating but I do. I have read several biographies about her.

#MOvember #Masterpiece is the theme song from the movie WE written & directed by Madonna. Film is about the affair between King Edward VIII and American divorcée Wallis Simpson. Never saw the film, maybe Amazon Prime or Netflix will have it. Wallis Simpson sounds like an interesting character.

TrishB A very interesting character! 4y

In his gossipy prose, Morton tells the story of Wallis Simpson, “that woman” who gave Edward VIII #ACaseOfYou . Morton‘s take on Simpson is not very flattering...her love affair with a king did topple a reigning monarch, after all. But, the more I read about her, the more she seems a mystery. No two accounts are alike... #LilithJuly

KarenUK I‘m fascinated by this couple.... thanks for sharing 👍💕 5y
Cinfhen Same @KarenUK I don‘t particularly admire either one of them but I‘m strangely fascinated by them. Thanks for posting @Librarybelle 💜 5y

If Morton is to be believed, Wallis Simpson was a cold fish! The more I learn about her, the more I see the contradictory information reported about her. She‘s either a woman wrongfully scorned or a woman who deserved her place in history. But, I find her intriguing; it‘s almost like a puzzle to decipher fact from fiction. If you like gossipy tones to the narrative, pick this one up. Morton is the best at dishing out gossip. #24B42019

CoverToCoverGirl Great review! I agree she is intriguing and still continues to be so controversial... is she a villain or just terribly maligned?? 5y
Andrew65 Sounds like the way they treated Richard III! 5y
Andrew65 A great time! 🙌🙌🙌🥳 5y

#YourBestAmericanGirl ? Well, the Duke of Windsor thought so...

I‘m in the middle of reading this right now. It‘s a slightly gossipy tone, and there are elements that I‘m either misremembering from other readings I did, or Morton is saying completely different things. Whatever the case, Wallis intrigues me. Her family also vacationed not very far from where I work, so there‘s the local celebrity connection too. #NoFemmeber

DivineDiana As I was born and raised in Baltimore, I have a huge fascination with Wallis. I had wanted to give her name to my daughter, but my husband would not agree. My daughter thanks him! 😉 5y
Samplergal Baltimore gal here too and was also fascinated by her history. I liked this book. 5y
Cinfhen Maybe I‘ll read this one for #pop19 #TitleWithLove 5y

anhistorianabouttown I find Morton's writing does tend to lean towards gossip 😒 Still, she was a fascinating albeit sad woman! 5y
AlaMich She did not come off well AT ALL in The Crown. 5y
Samplergal @AlaMich she rarely comes off good, ever. 5y
Samplergal @anhistorianabouttown oh yes! Gossiping is how he gets his scoops I‘m sure! 5y
Librarybelle @AlaMich No, she didn‘t! 5y
AlaMich @Samplergal @Librarybelle It‘s a bit disappointing to me, because before I knew very much about her, I always thought it sounded like such a romantic story. 5y
Billypar Don't know much about her- was considering trying The Crown- I guess that would be the for the brief unfavorable picture, and could then follow it with this book for more details ☺️ 5y
Librarybelle @Billypar Good plan! 5y
Samplergal @AlaMich I‘ve read a great deal on her. There was speculation that she really didn‘t like the king all that much and yet felt “stuck” because he was obsessed. She seemed to me, an opportunist, who didn‘t have much of a moral code. Who knows? He was a Nazi sympathizer so.... things happen for a reason. 5y
AlaMich @Samplergal So maybe they were meant for each other after all! 😉 5y

It seems everything I read about Wallis contradicts one another - did she love Edward? Was she happy? I‘m currently reading this one by biographer Morton. No matter the interpretation, Wallis‘ life changed forever when she met Edward. #MyLoveMyLife #ABBAinAugust

Mdargusch That was such an odd pairing and definitely interesting to read about! 6y

Bought this book before I noted the author. The best way to describe his style is “chatty.” It‘s not bad, but I‘m glad I‘ve read other books about Mrs. Simpson.

This was a very interesting book, if you‘re one of those people like myself who find that you really want to know the true story of people like Wallis Simpson. There was a lot of information in here that I didn‘t know, and a lot about the Duke and Duchess that certainly wasn‘t as it was portrayed to the general public. Very enjoyable.

Starting on this one on an early Saturday morning. Wallis Simpson intrigues me, as she is a woman who has received so much negative press and was involved in a royalty crisis. Plus, her family spent some time not too far from where I live...after all, she was American. Let‘s see what Morton has to say about her!

emilyhaldi Yes she fascinates me too! 6y
Librarybelle @emilyhaldi It‘s interesting so far... 6y

For other royals fans, there are some bargains today. The first two are #kindledeals. The one about Henry VIII is a print book, and I thought it was a steal when I paid $1 more for it. 😄👑
