How to Break Up with Your Phone
How to Break Up with Your Phone: The 30-Day Plan to Take Back Your Life | Catherine Price
Packed with tested strategies and practical tips, this book is the essential, life-changing guide for everyone who owns a smartphone. Is your phone the first thing you reach for in the morning and the last thing you touch before bed? Do you frequently pick it up just to check, only to look up forty-five minutes later wondering where the time has gone? Do you say you want to spend less time on your phonebut have no idea how to do so without giving it up completely? If so, this book is your solution. Award-winning journalist Catherine Price presents a practical, hands-on plan to break upand then make upwith your phone. The goal? A long-term relationship that actually feels good. Youll discover how phones and apps are designed to be addictive, and learn how the time we spend on them damages our abilities to focus, think deeply, and form new memories. Youll then make customized changes to your settings, apps, environment, and mindset that will ultimately enable you to take back control of your life.

I appreciate that the book took a practical approach to the average person's relationship to their smartphone: not suggesting you get rid of it, as it can be a useful tool and source of entertainment, but reassess your relationship with it. Liked the structure, half 'why it can be bad' and half 'how you can make it better'. Language could be a bit dramatic, but the scholarship was well sourced. Not crazy about the couple of dieting metaphors.

My daughter has this as assigned reading so I thought I would read it too. It doesn‘t really dive into cyber bullying, etc., which is the largest concern for her age group. It did offer a lot of helpful insight and advice about breaking unhealthy habits with phones.

Total disclosure: if I wasn‘t in my phone so much, I would be much more productive in life and I could get back to my original love, READING. My brain hurts with so much screen time. Its time to break up with the phone (social media).

Annmcoop I am reading this now. It has been assigned as summer reading to my daughter‘s high school class. Very eye opening so far. 9mo
Maggie_Reads It is very eye opening. I haven‘t completely broken by addiction but I have gotten better. 9mo

It‘s a quick read (or in my case, listen). I felt it was very informative without being repetitive or dense. The author presents lots of good info and tips. I wish I had a physical copy so that I could reference it. I recommend.

Very technical the first half. Second half is very good if you are looking for ways to be less connected to technology.

Haha, I realize the irony of posting about this book on an app. But this is actually not about not using your phone at all, but about setting boundaries and establishing a healthy relationship with your phone. While I didn't follow the whole 30 day breakup routine she outlines, I did do some of the things she suggested, taking things with a grain of salt. Price has a background in mindfulness and meditation which is also part of the approach.

I read this book a while ago but it still has an effect on me today. I absolutely loved it. This book offers realistic goals to the reader and explains why your phone can be so hard to quit. I recommend this to anyone wanting a healthier relationship with their phone!

I‘m trying to do better about pursuing things that renew me. Today, that looks like Captain America leggings, ice water with lemon, interesting books, a journal, and my reading nook until it‘s time to go to church and hang with some preschoolers. I‘m trying to be on my phone less and in the things that bring me joy more.
What are your Saturday plans, friends?

Crazeedi I'm watching March madness and trying to finish my #lmpbc book so I can get it sent monday! 5y
Redwritinghood I‘m not sure they bring me joy, but there is some satisfaction in crossing things off my list. Cleaning, go to the gym, getting my daughter‘s prom dress altered, and some reading, of course. (edited) 5y

This was a surprisingly good read! Part One focuses on how our phones are designed to addict us and what the impact of that is. Part Two outlines a simple, practical 30 day plan for better managing your relationship with your phone. I have already implemented some of the strategies!

I really liked that the author advocated for realistic healthy phone use instead of expecting people to completely give up the good parts of phones with the bad.

I'm already pretty good about thoughtful phone usage (and screen time in general), so I was really just reading this to be sociable in an online book club. I was especially interested in the brain science early in the book. The actual 30-day process isn't that spectacular, but it might be more helpful or appealing to someone who's really looking for guidance. I'm going to see if I can get my hubby to read it, too. 😉 Between pick & so-so.

jb72 I actually have the screen time thing set up on my phone so I can see how much I use it. 5y
JoyBlue @jb72 Were you surprised by your usage, or was it what you expected? 5y
jb72 @JoyBlue I guess a little of both. I knew I used it a lot, but seeing the actual time shocked me. 5y
JoyBlue @jb72 😉 Good luck achieving levels that work for you! 5y

"...spending extended time on them has the power to change both the structure and the function of our brains—including our abilities to form new memories, think deeply, focus, and absorb and remember what we read." [continued in first comment]

JoyBlue [continued] "Multiple studies have associated the heavy use of smartphones (especially when used for social media) with negative effects on neuroticism, self-esteem, impulsivity, empathy, self-identity, and self-image, as well as with sleep problems, anxiety, stress, and depression." Hello!! Anyone missed me?
My phone I had broke so I gave it up for a week which means I was phone less and litsy-less for 7 days, but I survived!! It was actually nice without a phone and I literally did not miss it at all, but I did miss seeing everyone‘s posts here, as some may know I been actively goodreads the whole time on computer lol
So now I have a new phone (ran into some phone complications at first) but I‘m here ☺️❤️
