Among the Wicked: A Kate Burkholder Novel
Among the Wicked: A Kate Burkholder Novel | Linda Castillo
19 posts | 27 read | 1 reading | 8 to read
Chief of Police Kate Burkholder is called upon by the sheriff's department in rural, upstate New York to assist on a developing situation that involves a reclusive Amish settlement and the death of a young girl. Unable to penetrate the wall of silence between the Amish and "English" communities, the sheriff asks Kate to travel to New York, pose as an Amish woman, and infiltrate the community. Kate's long time love interest, State Agent John Tomasetti, is dead set against her taking on such an unorthodox assignment, knowing she'll have limited communication - and even less in the way of backup. But Kate can't turn her back, especially when the rumor mill boils with disturbing accounts of children in danger. She travels to New York where she's briefed and assumes her new identity as a lone widow seeking a new life. Kate infiltrates the community and goes deep under cover. In the coming days, she unearths a world built on secrets, a series of shocking crimes, and herself, alone... trapped in a fight for her life.

Setting is an Amish village in rural upstate New York- a girl was found frozen in the woods by a lake. Kate, bc of her history as a former Amish, is asked to go undercover as an Amish widow. The suspense kept me on the edge of my seat

Police Chief Kate Burkholder goes undercover in an outside Amish community to work out the disturbing clues surrounding a murder and the congregation‘s almost-obsession with their bishop. This is a really neat change of pace from the previous books in the series, which feature murders and hate crimes. As usual, I worried for Kate‘s safety as she worked alone among some really bad people. This is book #8 in the series. I love these books.

eanderson Great series! 4y
bookaholic1 Great series, I'm on #9 and it's a good one 4y

I feel mixed emotions about this one. It was a fun read as all of hers are; however, something about the plot at the end felt out of place. I thought the undercover work and the dynamics of the elusive Schrock character were compelling enough: I‘m not sure why she deviated to involve the foreign women...or why that was necessary to the book. It left me with more questions than answers.

This is #8 in the series and so far is one I can't say I loved it😢. Hopefully the next one will be as good as the first 7 books

Another great book in the Kate Burkholder series. I was on a major book hangover with the last of the Grant County series by Karin Slaughter and I knew Linda Castillo would help! 🌟🌟🌟🌟💕💕💕

😱 When an author uses a town in your state that you‘ve spent a lot of time in! There is nothing like Amish food and their little shops. We go all the time!

CollapsingLibrary Honestly, I get excited when my Midwest home state gets mentioned in books 😂 I can‘t imagine if a town I‘ve spent time in was mentioned! 6y
eanderson @acfellin it is exciting! Of course I see Indianapolis and South Bend quite a bit but to see a town from Northern Indiana that is fairly small, not far from where I grew up, and still visit often! 6y
LauraJ I‘ve been there! 6y
Ash.on.the.line I love going there! Totally agree about the food! 😍😁 6y

I picked up Pray for Silence in an airport newsstand a few years back and was hooked. An unusual backdrop but Linda does it justice!

Bks4Wrms Btw, I LOVED the book you sent me in my Summer Santa package. It got me out of a reading slump! 👍🏻👌🏻🙌🏻 7y

I've read three and the 9th isn't out until Tuesday; I won't be able to read all of them, but I plan to #slaythatseries as best I can this weekend.

Melkyl I have read most of them. I live close to Holmes county, so I have an interest in the setting. The books are interesting, quick reads. 7y
Lizpixie I love this series. I have most of them on audiobook, which is better than print because you can hear how the names are supposed to be pronounced, Pennsylvania Dutch names can be difficult. And I love hearing the Amish accent when she reads the characters. 7y
Bookzombie I love this series. It's one I'm actually caught up with and I'm anticipating the next book! I also prefer them on audio. @Lizpixie 7y

An exciting eighth installment to the series! I liked the change of scenery for this one! It's a fun & fast read! Debating if I should be responsible and go to bed, or dig into the next book.... #Shelfie #RiotGrams #BookBinge

Chief of Police Kate Burkholder goes undercover in another state when an Amish girl is found dead in mysterious circumstances. This was a good story that zipped along at a good pace. Rating:4/5.

Kate Burkholder #8 This one is different from the previous books. Kate travels to northern New York to go undercover in an Amish community and solve the murder of a young girl. While I missed the regular characters, the change of setting and Kate's return to the plain life was refreshing. Kate gets herself into tight spots as usual, but I love this series and look forward to the next release. #litsyAtoZ #cisforcastillo #seriescatchup

#riotgrams Day 6 Here are my current reads. The book tagged is my current audio book. #currentread #bookriot

Merethebookgal Blood at the Root is such a hard but important read 8y
mjdowens I am currently reading The Weed That Strings the Hangman's Bag. I love this series. Trying to go slow so on this series because I know I will be so sad when they are done 8y
Bookzombie @Merethebookgal I was excited to find a copy at the library. I know it's going to be rough and all I have read is the introduction so far. 8y
Bookzombie @mjdowens I love it too. I'm probably going to space them out also. 8y

Solid addition to the series starring a formally Amish police chief who goes undercover in Amish community. Slightly predictable but the mc, Kate Burkholder, is an intriguing one.
