The Optimist's Guide to Letting Go
The Optimist's Guide to Letting Go | Amy E. Reichert
Three generations. Seven days. One big secret. The author of The Coincidence of Coconut Cake unfolds a mother-daughter story told by three women whose time to reckon with a life-altering secret is running out. Gina Zoberski wants to make it through one day without her fastidious mother, Lorraine, cataloguing all her faults, and her sullen teenage daughter, May, snubbing her. Too bad theres no chance of that. Her relentlessly sunny disposition annoys them both, no matter how hard she tries. Instead, Gina finds order and comfort in obsessive list-making and her work at Grilled Gs, the gourmet grilled cheese food truck built by her late husband. But when Lorraine suffers a sudden stroke, Gina stumbles upon a family secret Lorraine's kept hidden for forty years. In the face of her mothers failing health and her daughters rebellion, this optimist might find that piecing together the truth is the push she needs to let go...

I have never been disappointed by one if Reichert‘s books and this was no exception. I love how she makes you feel all of the feels and in this case gives you a major craving for grilled cheese. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I bought this book on clearance last time I was at the bookstore specifically because I loved the pretty cover and the title so much. But the book itself fell flat. Full of shallow, unbelievable relationships and with so many annoying minor inconsistencies. It was almost like the author didn't remember what she had written just a few pages before. A quick and fluffy read, yes. But not something I'd recommend. #ReadingWomenChallenge

I‘ve never cried so much reading a book. I loved this book. It was so heartfelt and May‘s relationship with her father reminds me so much of my dad and I. I‘m glad I took off work today to finish this, because if I tried to finish this at work, my co-workers would think something horrible happened.

Also I need to find a man that is like Joe and Drew. So I guess I need a Polish American one??

This was my book club‘s pick this month and I really enjoyed it. It had a little bit of everything, family secrets, love, teenage turmoil and an interesting story to link it altogether. I really loved the characters. This book just had it all and ended perfectly.

I really enjoyed this look at love and loss through the eyes of three generations of women. I‘ve read all of Reichert‘s other books, and this one is my favorite so far. This has more mature writing and more mature plots. Each character‘s voice was distinct and personality was developed.

Jenny Glad you liked it too. 6y

Finally finished this one along with an audiobook and another novel. It is one of those „feel good“ novels where you can detect early on that it will end well, but it has a few little turns that keep you going. I would give this to a friend who needs some “reading TLC“, but is not up for a very challenging story.

My weakness: trying to read too many books at once. That‘s not even all of them.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5 I “read” this book via audiobook and I loved everything about it. From the three points of view to the flashbacks throughout the story. I found it to be a very fast read. While this is my first book by this author it will not be my last.

I just looked at this book in the bookstore. I didn‘t buy it today, but I told it I‘d be back. With a cover like this...what else could I say?!

Jenny The cover actually ties into the story too! Love it when that happens. 6y
Nute @Jenny If I was a book designer, the cover would always make sense. Right??! 6y

This was a quick, easy read, but it lacked a little too much substance for my taste. Told partly in present day, partly in flashback, you get to know three generations of women who had to deal with love and loss, each in their own way. A lot of heavy handed subject matter is dealt with in this book, but it‘s glossed over at times. I also found the alternating time frames a little clunky and hard to keep track of.

Reggie Is there a Captain? Although I guess since they got divorced maybe that doesn‘t play so much anymore. 6y
Purrfectpages @Reggie yes! Captain is her brother and has made appearances here before as well. Obviously they‘re not married, but they still don‘t get along! 6y
Sace Captain and Tenille - you totally win cat names 😹 6y

A little more serious than Reichart‘s other books, but I liked it. And I adore the cover. It‘s beautiful AND relevant.

The Once Upon a Bookclub / Chik-Lit Designs Booth was so adorable. I kinda wish I signed up for a subscription box just to get their literary wallet giveaway. They also had gorgeous literary bags!

Melissa_J I used to subscribe to this one. Loved the books, but the bookish gifts were not worth the money (keeping in mind my box was shipping internationally and I had to convert from US dollars). The concept is great, and if it had been cheaper I would likely have stayed with it. (edited) 6y
