The Kennedy Debutante
The Kennedy Debutante | Kerri Maher
A captivating novel following the exploits of Kathleen "Kick" Kennedy, the forgotten and rebellious daughter of one of America's greatest political dynasties. London, 1938. The effervescent "It girl" of London society since her father was named the ambassador, Kathleen "Kick" Kennedy moves in rarified circles, rubbing satin-covered elbows with some of the 20th century's most powerful figures. Eager to escape the watchful eye of her strict mother, Rose, the antics of her older brothers, Jack and Joe, and the erratic behavior of her sister Rosemary, Kick is ready to strike out on her own and is soon swept off her feet by Billy Hartington, the future Duke of Devonshire. But their love is forbidden, as Kick's devout Catholic family and Billy's staunchly Protestant one would never approve their match. When war breaks like a tidal wave across her world, Billy is ripped from her arms as the Kennedys are forced to return to the States. Kick gets work as a journalist and joins the Red Cross to get back to England, where she will have to decide where her true loyalties lie--with family or with love . . .

I liked this book way more than I thought I would. I‘d never even heard of Kick Kennedy before this book.

So enjoying this. Kick Kennedy was a marvel, honestly. Actually - all of the Kennedy sisters were, in their ways. This is obviously a fictional take on Kick and her family, but who better? The Kennedys‘ legacy - their curse - it‘s all the stuff of the best novels anyway. #thekennedydebutante #kerrimaher

(Day 26 - #RomeoAndJuliet)
Pictured above are William “Billy” Cavendish, Marquess of Hartington, and Kathleen “Kick” Kennedy Cavendish, Marchioness of Hartington. The tagged historical-fiction novel is based on the “Romeo-and-Juliet” nature of their relationship: Kick coming from a devout Catholic family, while Billy‘s family is Protestant. Despite the Kennedy family‘s disapproval, Kick went ahead with her marriage, ⬇️

gradcat (Cont. from ⬆️) only to become a widow four months later. Sadly, Kathleen died only four years later in a plane crash. The Kennedys‘ tragic legacy of premature death started early on in the twentieth century. 5y
Cathythoughts That family were so much part of my youth ... amazing & tragic ... 5y
gradcat @Cathythoughts It is the same for me. They were such a dynastic family, and yet were afflicted by so much tragedy. (edited) 5y

4⭐
I thought starting this book that it would be a fluff story. It wasn't. This is a story of a forgotten Kennedy, the 2nd oldest girl, who is brought to life as a devout but independent woman. Her story is at once inspiring and tragic. I knew her name but not her life. Definitely worth reading. I won't reveal any big details so as not to spoil the book. If you do want info I can post in the comments.

Next book up, not sure if I'm going to like. I really want a book I can sink my teeth into, but this one goes back in a few days, so I figured I should read.

YA historical fiction about JFK‘s older sister, set mostly in London in the late 1930s into WWI. I appreciated the perspective on a lesser-known Kennedy and loved the strong Mitford presence, but it was a little heavy on the religiosity for my tastes.

I've been reading a lot of social justice nonfiction lately for both school and work and needed a little escapism this weekend! Nothing like glamor and #richpeopleproblems to do the trick! #weekendreads #historicalfiction

A quick historical fiction read. My favorite part was that there were Milfords.

For those who are major history buffs, this is for you. It was okay (3.5 stars) for me. Some of you guys might like it better than me. http://quirkybookwormalways.blogspot.com/2018/10/kennedy-debutante-by-kerri-mahe... @penguinrandomhouse @PenguinPublishing @PenguinRandomCa

Oh, rainy days and Mondays. The best cure for them both is a good book. I‘m psyched to dive into this one; growing up in Rhode Island, the Kennedys were a Big Deal, but nobody ever talked about Kathleen.

Fascinating history and readable characters, but the book drags in places. There‘s a lot of religious family drama here, and that surprised me. The Kennedy‘s are a fascinating family, and Kick Kennedy is full of life and energy. She was great fun to read about! I voluntarily reviewed an eARC provided by the publisher via NetGalley.

Ugh this book just dragged on. It was way too long and I felt like the story just never ended. Which wouldn't be a bad thing if the story was a little more interesting.

This is about the 4th Kennedy sibling, Kick, of whom you hear next to nothing about. It's really very good. Historical fiction obviously. My ARC copy doesn't have a fun cover. Sorry.

From the enthusiastic response when I posted the ARC on Instagram, it looks like people are super-excited about the upcoming THE KENNEDY DEBUTANTE, so here's a treat -- my #womenshistoryreads interview with the author, Kerri Maher! We talked titles, soap operas, #Kennedys & more. @BerkleyPub
