After his wife, Helen, is brazenly abducted before his eyes, Special Agent Pendergast furiously pursues the kidnappers, chasing them across the country and into Mexico. But then, things go terribly, tragically wrong; the kidnappers escape; and a shattered Pendergast retreats to his New York apartment and shuts out the world. But when a string of bizarre murders erupts across several Manhattan hotels-perpetrated by a boy who seems to have an almost psychic ability to elude capture-NYPD Lieutenant D'Agosta asks his friend Pendergast for help. Reluctant at first, Pendergast soon discovers that the killings are a message from his wife's kidnappers. But why a message? And what does it mean? When the kidnappers strike again at those closest to Pendergast, the FBI agent, filled anew with vengeful fury, sets out to track down and destroy those responsible. His journey takes him deep into the trackless forests of South America, where he ultimately finds himself face to face with an old evil that-rather than having been eradicated-is stirring anew... and with potentially world-altering consequences. Confucius once said: "Before you embark on a journey of revenge, first dig two graves." Pendergast is about to learn the hard way just how true those words still ring.

This is the 12th Pendergast novel and the conclusion to The Helen Trilogy. This one is quite depressing, and then it goes nuts. I think my favorite parts were actually the side story of Corrie Swanson and her troubles.

I‘m mostly just glad to be done with the Helen trilogy, and hope that the series gains some momentum in the next few books… this trilogy was a slog for me! I am excited that it seems like Corrie and Constance will be getting some development but I really didn‘t enjoy the main storyline.

Bookzombie Yes, I was ready to be finished with the Helen Trilogy too. 1y

⭐⭐⭐⭐
I enjoyed this one, book 12 in the Pendergast series, but I am glad the Helen story is over. You really have to suspend your disbelief with these books, but they are always fast and fun reads.

1st a warning: DO NOT SKIP THE PRECEDING 11 BOOKS in this series. FBI agent Pendergast follows a heinous murderer to his base in the #Brazilian Amazon forest & must take on a Nazi horde hidden there since WWII. Two other unrelated plots weave in and out, clearly having started in earlier books—probably good if you‘ve read the prior books, but they slowed down the non-stop action of the main story. So I‘ll be starting book 1, Relic, soon.

Twainy I loved Relic!! It‘s the book that started it all for me! Pendergast really isn‘t a huge character but it‘s a thriller!! You‘re correct Two Graves continues at least one important storyline. 4y

It‘s been a really tough week, advising clients of my friend/attorney‘s passing, freezing weather, and boiling water. So today, with clear skies and almost 60 degrees, I‘ve sat outside to read this book I haven‘t picked up in a long time

MrBook Hope you and everyone there are doing alright! 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻 4y
Bookzombie It has definitely been a tough week. Glad you are able to get outside and enjoy the sun a bit. 4y

Nute Thinking of you, Karen! Happy to see a post from you today, and such a nice one stating that the sun is shining brightly again in your home state. Thankful that you are safe and well!🙂 4y
Texreader @MrBook Thank you! Your thoughts are appreciated! 4y
Texreader @Bookzombie I hope you do too! Did you stay warm? Even though I never lost my electricity something was up with my heater. During the day I could only barely get it out of the 50s and maybe 60 degrees if I was lucky, only by end of the day. 4y
Texreader @Twainy 👍🏻 4y
Texreader @Nute You‘re the sweetest!! Thanks for your kind note!! It was definitely a healing day. 4y
Bookzombie @Texreader We were very fortunate and never lost electricity or water. We think we might be on the same grid as the fire station near us. I‘m so sorry about your heater. I definitely still layered up and sat with throws on me. 4y

Love this! Character is going undercover in the Amazon forest and calls himself Percival Fawcett, which otherwise would have been lost on me if I hadn‘t just read the Lost City of Z! Fawcett was the famous British explorer of the Amazon, pre- and post-WWI! Love it when authors do this! Obviously, the name is lost on the locals. I wonder if there‘s going to be more to this false identity...

I‘m only just now getting to the part of this book that takes place in #Brazil. Excellent book but somewhat of a hard read since it‘s book 12 in a series I haven‘t read, and that seems to be really important, and I‘m constantly on edge reading it for the gruesome murders. So if you‘re still on #Brazil for #foodandlit like me even though we are well into February don‘t worry, you‘re not alone!

Texreader @Clwojick @Butterfinger @Elizabeth2 @marleed @GingerAntics Thanks y‘all! He knows my fave songs and he‘s so sweet to play them for me when I‘m around. 4y
Texreader @Elizabeth2 How old is your son? Isn‘t it the best? 4y
Elizabeth2 @Texreader so sweet that he plays especially for you! 💕 My son is 18. He‘s been playing for a couple of years. Mostly self taught. He took a guitar class his senior year in HS and the teacher had him sit in the hall and work on different music because he was too advanced for the class. He‘s studying music tech/production in college. He also plays the saxophone. How old is your son? Has he been playing long? 4y
Texreader @Elizabeth2 That‘s awesome!! And the sax!! Nice!! My son is a high school freshman. He‘s had a tutor since the end of 4th grade, a retired college guitar professor. We love him to pieces. Son and 2 friends have a band but the pandemic has made that difficult. They did a song for their 8th grade talent show during the lockdown, filming themselves separately and then sound edited together. Ahhh technology. Such a good hobby, don‘t you think? 4y
LeahBergen Aww! This is lovely! 💗💗 4y
Elizabeth2 @Texreader I love that they made a video for their talent show! It is a great hobby. Provides an outlet for them. My son goes to his guitar when he‘s happy or upset. 4y

“and now something was going on in his stomach that did not seem related to normal digestion.” That‘s quite a polite way to describe the situation! I do appreciate when authors add touches of what real life is like & there isn‘t an assumption main characters don‘t have tummy troubles, too.

By the way, I‘m loving this book. It‘s action-packed from the get-go. Looks like I‘m going to have to read the Pendergast series now! #foodandlit #Brazil

LMJenkins The Pendergast series is great! 4y
Butterfinger It sounds really good. I need to see if it is the first in the series. 4y
Texreader @Butterfinger by sheer luck, it is! 4y
Texreader @LMJenkins If the rest of the series is as good as the beginning of this book then all I can say is, what took me so long? ☺️ 4y

Has anyone else ever done this? I just bought the irl of the tagged book and planned to start it in bed tonight. So I grab the book and turn out the light and then realize I‘m holding a book in complete darkness (see photo above), apparently forgetting it‘s not an ebook! Well, different book it is for tonight then!

Megabooks I love my new headlamps! I got two for $14 and I prefer them to book lights because they‘re easier on paperbacks and I find them versatile for other applications like walking through the house at night, taking out the trash, etc. I like the rechargeable ones - less waste. 4y

An accidental #foodandlit #brazil read. I didn‘t realize when I started that there would be a war with modern day Nazis in the middle of the Brazilian forests. I‘m a big Pendergast fan, although I always find the middles exasperatingly muddy. But lots of good action and intricate plotting. Always a fun read. The narrator was good on this too, a bit of an English accent which fits the character so well.

Butterfinger Wow. I knew many Nazis moved to South America, but did not realize that the ideology was still there. 4y

Book #12 of the Agent Pendergast series. This trilogy took me in directions I did not expect. The 3rd book was vastly different from the 1st. I thoroughly enjoyed the twists and turns and how things came together in the end. As usual, these books have some far-fetching ideas that are outside the norm of reality, but are still quite entertaining.

I had to cover the title because it's covered by the library barcode sticker 🙄 TWO GRAVES brings to a close a mystery that has haunted Pendergast more than any other before. And, oh boy, the plot twist! The revelations! And weirdly, I'm also loving the ruffling of Pendergast's usually serene exterior, though I'm sad as to why. But this new intensity of his definitely brings an edge to his actions that makes the suspense sharper than ever.

I just read that Preston and Child are working on another installment in the Pendergast series. I can't wait, but in the meantime, time to get caught up. There are 2 books standing between me and the new release. This is a thrill a minute, sleep with the lights on, can't put the book down, series.
