It‘s taken me the better part of a year to read this, but I am glad I waited until I was in a good headspace. Reading her final letters was still devastating. Now that I have spent a fair amount of time reading both volumes, I can say that no other writer reflects my thoughts as well as Sylvia. To read her letters is to affirm her existence as more than “the patron saint of weird literary girls.”

I think I‘m finally in the right headspace to read this. Plus I‘ve got tons of time, so a 1,000+ page book will keep me plenty occupied.

I do cringe sometimes at some of her letters- especially as some of the people involved would have still been alive when these were first published. They weren‘t actually written to be published. But I‘m still reading.

rubyslippersreads @Itchyfeetreader I just found an article about it on Jezebel. It was part of a whole “fashion spread” of female author suicides. And so tasteless that Vice took it down. I don‘t know if the person who posted it on Twitter this morning knew its provenance or not. 😒 (edited) 5y

I vaguely remember this from when it was originally published but in the intervening time had convinced myself it was a tasteless mock of fashion spreads vs an actual straight up article. Although on reflection I should stress I don‘t think either intent is appropriate. 5y

Weaponxgirl @rubyslippersreads ffs, yes some women who committed suicide had amazing style but let not link that to suicide please?! How could anyone think it‘s a good idea to do a series like that. It reminds me of being a depressed teen and suicide seemed almost glamorous and this sort of stuff did not help my mental state at all. 5y

Unbookish post....If you don‘t watch The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, you must! It is smart and hilarious. One funny bookish moment this season is when a woman listening to Mrs. Maisel deliver an impromptu comedy set gives her a business card for a psychiatrist saying, “He‘s done wonders for my friend Sylvia Plath.”

One day, "cowlike & cabbagey" after Frieda's birth, Plath went downtown & "bought three 2-yard lengths of material":
"One bright Red Viyella (at $1.50 a yard), one bright blue linen, & one soft Wedgwood blue flannel with stylized white little flowers on it (both about 50 cents a yard). I also got a dress pattern & nightgown pattern (Simplicity). I am awfully proud of making clothes for little Frieda."

Aimeesue I had no idea that Plath was a sewer. Um, that she SEWED. And I'm a bit jealous that she got that flannel for 50¢ a yard. "Sewer" is going to amuse me all day now. ? 5y

Tanisha_A @TrishB I have read The Bell Jar (plus a few poems here and there; now properly reading Ariel), and it certainly was enough to make me want to read her more. I still have to buy copies of the volumes of letters. Alas, yes! We will never know the full story! 💔 Looking forward to your upcoming posts on Plath! 5y
