Death Notice
Death Notice | Zhou Haohui
14 posts | 9 read | 14 to read
For nearly two decades, an unsolved murder case has haunted Sergeant Zheng Haoming of the Chengdu Police Department. Eighteen years ago, two victims were murdered after being served with 'death notices'. In refined calligraphy their perceived crimes were itemised and they were sentenced to death. The date of execution was declared, as was the name of their executioner: Eumenides. Now, a user on an internet forum has asked the public to submit names for judgement judgement for those the law cannot touch. Those found guilty will be punished and there is only one sentence: death. The user's handle? Eumenides. Does Zheng have a lead? Has a long-dormant serial killer resurfaced? Perhaps modern police techniques criminal profiling, online surveillance and SWAT quick response teams can catch a killer who previously evaded justice? Or perhaps the killer is more than a match for whatever the Chengdu Police Department can muster? The first in a trilogy and a bestseller in China, Death Notice is a hi-octane, hi-concept, cat-and-mouse thriller that adds an exhilarating new gear to the police procedural.

DEATH NOTICE is a fast-paced and compelling police procedural with one major flaw: it relies so heavily on the genre‘s tropes that anyone who‘s read a few of these can use their knowledge of crime fiction, not the clues Zhou plants along the way, to solve the mystery. Despite that, I did enjoy seeing this familiar setup in a Chinese context.

Be aware it‘s a series opener, so there‘re dangling threads.

I busted my ass making a superfine wrap sweater for my Mum, and even though each piece was the exact dimensions the pattern gave for her size, it came out way too big. 😑 There‘s no way I‘m reknitting it (IT TOOK FOREVER 😭), but it looks like I can sew the excess over on itself. Hello, tons of fiddly lace pattern matching.

At least I‘ve got an audiobook. This one‘s super tropey, but the mystery‘s pretty good. #audioknitting

#TBRtemptation post 2! This became one of Asia‘s biggest thrillers of 2018! See what all the hullabaloo is about! A police officer‘s brutal murder in Sichuan Province sends shockwaves. A mysterious person called Eumenides is behind it...and the public is nominating people worthy of being targeted. The police start getting death notices about next targets but can‘t stop the killings. A high-octane mystery thriller! #blameLitsy #blameMrBook 😎

Good morning! My reading nest is stocked and I‘m ready to spend the day lost in books! What are you reading? Did you get books for Christmas? I did not, because it would be like giving stripes to a zebra, but I‘m sure I can find something around here to read. ☺️❤️📚

This was an intriguing and twisted police procedural set in Chengdu, China in 2002. I lived in Shanghai from 2003-2005, so I found this a particularly interesting backdrop. While some of the characters were a bit two-dimensional, the plot was tense and suspenseful. I look forward to reading the next book in the trilogy!

An action-packed crime thriller set in China that sold more than 1 million print copies and is now published in English. The killer styles himself as an avenger of unpunished crimes, calling himself Eumenides & sending out death notices listing their crimes and date of execution. This is the first book in a trilogy has a complicated plot & sometimes stilted dialogue but it was a pretty exciting page turner! #ripxiii

Well, that was banana pants! The plot here is very twisty and too busy, but it was still incredibly entertaining. Some critics have said it reads more like a movie script than a novel and I can kind of see that, but I wonder how much of that is translation or just style differences. I certainly tore through it and plan to read the rest of them when they are available!

A fun and gripping cat and mouse mystery set in Chengdu, China. Lots of twists and turns interspersed with flashbacks from many of the characters, including the vigilante killer. Looking forward to the next two installments.

Because I live in Beijing I read a lot of Chinese fiction (in translation). Death Notice by Zhou Haohui is a cracking read, specially if you enjoy crime fiction. A police procedural where an elite squad is trying to track down a serial killer in the city of Chengdu. I was hooked from the 1st page. The author is very popular here in China. Looking forward to more of his books being translated. Highly recommended!
