The World of Lore: Dreadful Places
The World of Lore: Dreadful Places | Aaron Mahnke
Captivating stories of the places where human evil has left a nefarious markfeaturing both rare and best-loved stories from the hit podcast Lore, now a streaming television series Sometimes you walk into a room, a building, or even a town, and you feel it. Something seems offan atmosphere that leaves you oddly unsettled, with a sense of lingering darkness. Join Aaron Mahnke, the host of the popular podcast Lore, as he explores some of these dreadful places and the history that haunts them. Mahnke takes us to Colorado and the palatial Stanley Hotel, where wealthy guests enjoyed views of the Rocky Mountains at the turn of the twentieth centuryand where, decades later, a restless author would awaken from a nightmare, inspired to write one of the most revered horror novels of all time. Mahnke also crosses land and sea to visit frightful sitesfrom New Orleans to Richmond, Virginia, to the brooding, ancient castles of Englandeach with its own echo of dark deeds, horrible tragedies, and shocking evil still resounding. Filled with evocative illustrations, this eerie tour of lurid landmarks and doomed destinations is just the ticket to take armchair travelers with a taste for the macabre to places they never thought theyd visit in their wildest, scariest dreams.

47/150 One last book squeezed in before #MagnificientMay readathon is done. I really enjoyed this, it wasn't scary but it did give me the creeps. It might sound weird, but I started watching the so-called scary supernatural videos on Tik-Tok before starting the book each day. It really got me in the mood, gave me goosebumps sometimes. 4 ⭐⭐⭐⭐

I'll be reading the books in this pic at some point during the #readathon but for right now, I'm listening to the tagged audiobook while I eat the pumpkin spice oatmeal chocolate chunk cookies I baked and sipping some more tea.

Gosh I really love Aaron Mahnke and the Lore podcast! I‘ve listened to the podcast for probably 5 years or so now and still adore it! This book was a fantastic collection of folklore and ghost stories of Dreadful Places from well known ones like the Stanley Hotel to lesser knowns like Hadley, Massachusetts. Also got four hours done for the #October20in4! #TeamSlaughter

Tonight, I decided to abandon this book that I had to read for a bookclub.
I've read around 70 pages, and I just don't feel like going on.
It feels to me like a series of superficially told ghost tales. Moreover, I find the tone of the narrator quite annoying...
Really not my cup of tea.

A collection of spookiness ranging from ghosts to cryptids, and all sorts of mysterious happenstance throughout history. Lots of gorey medical details as well. Fun stuff!

Yikes. Obviously I'm familiar with lobotomies but to read about it in such matter of fact terms is awful. Especially that stirring bit. 🤢

I loved the first two when I listened to them last year, and I enjoyed this one very much, too. I'm pretty sure that, if you've listened to his podcast, there's no new material here, but I find Mahnke's voice soothing and I like how he doesn't pass judgement - he leaves it up to the reader to decide whether there is a non-supernatural explanation for the stories presented.

Yes, Aaron Mahnke did just drop a Hamilton musical reference into his Lore book, and yes, I did cackle in my car on the ride home and start singing to myself. 🤣🤣 #Screamathon is off to a great start!

Even though I‘m bummed about not finishing certain books in September, I‘m determined to enjoy October‘s #screamathon! These are the books I hope to get through-not all strictly horror, but hopefully creepy enough to count. I‘ll come back to September‘s unfinished books in November. I‘m going to start the tagged book on audio today. Happy October everyone and thanks for hosting @4thhouseontheleft 👻 #ScreamathonPhotoChallenge

alisiakae Great selection! Definitely creepy enough. 💀 5y
DGRachel @4thhouseontheleft I forgot the best part! Most of these count for Mount TBR, which is the one reading challenge where I am failing miserably. 😅 5y

I watched part of the Amazon show, but thought that the audio format would work better for me- and while I did like it, I‘m actually looking forward to getting my hands on a physical copy of the book! I enjoyed #AudioColoring with goosebumps but would like to reference some of these out of order and can skip over some of the redundant transitions!

This was my least favourite of the trilogy. Some great tales but it kind of dragged. That being said, I did scream while reading it when my lamp shade fell off the light. So, in the grand scheme of things, if a book of scary stories makes you jump, scream, or look at every dark corner? It‘s doing its job. 👍👍

⭐️⭐️⭐️

ShyBookOwl Haha nice. I love this podcast and have been curious about the books 5y
StellaDz @ShyBookOwl I love all of his podcasts! These books are sort of a refresher of the podcast. A lot of the same stories. I listened to Lore so quickly though that reading helped me catch the little details I missed. There a few new stories in each of the books, and the art is super nice! They are beautiful books! 5y
ShyBookOwl @StellaDz awesome! The artwork looks great 5y

I heard this story on the Podcast, and it is legit my fave of the 100+ tales. I‘m glad there was a piece of art for it. It is so beyond messed up, that I couldn‘t believe it actually happened. #currentlyreading

ljuliel Does your library have the vacation extension thing ? Like here, if you check books out and are going on vacation, they‘ll extend your loan for an extra number of weeks. 5y
StellaDz @ljuliel I‘ll have to check! The last city I lived in wouldn‘t renew if there was a waiting list and there always is in this city 😳 (edited) 5y

Been listening to this on audiobook from Libby. I wish my Libby could pair up with my kindle for switching between since I have the kindle copy of this too. This had such a long wait time for audio too so I really need to get it finished. I do love the sound of his voice too. I wish he narrated more audiobooks.

Stellina I love his stories and find his voice calming. He did narrate Frankenstein which is free through Apple Books, if you're interested. 5y
allureofbeauty @Stellina I actually already have that one and listened to it. I hope he‘ll do more in the future. He has the perfect voice for it. 5y
xxjenadanxx Do you listen to the Lore podcast? 5y
allureofbeauty @xxjenadanxx yes I do. I haven‘t watched the show yet tho. 5y

Subject is interesting but delivery wasn't. Found the writing repetitive, the tone exaggerated, the narrative simplistic. Overuse of redundant comments. It's a verbatim of the podcast- could have done with more editing to make it more reader friendly.Gets better as you read on, stories are spookier, writing flows better, but it doesn't quite forego the irritating banalities and moralistic quips.

Cinfhen Lots of mixed reviews on this book. Most felt like the podcast was wayyyy better than book 5y
YasmiNova I agree @Cinfhen - at least with the audio the narrator can bring the stories to life. The book just needed rewording and reorganising (and fewer comments about the terrible places and people in this world - the stories showcase that enough) and it would have been a much less grating read... 5y

An interesting account of some of the well known spooky or haunted places throughout the world, including The Stanley Hotel, The Bell Witch, and Glamis Castle, among other places. Great if you‘re into creepy stuff.

CocoReads I‘ve been to the Stanley! It‘s an interesting place. And I took the daytime tour. I‘d love to go back sometime and take the night tour. 5y

One of these days I‘m going to have to check out the book or the podcast. Hubby and I LOVED the first season on Amazon. Asked him about a second season at the panel today, and am glad to report they are in the middle of filming season 2!
