The Fever King
The Fever King | Victoria Lee
In the former United States, sixteen-year-old Noam lvaro wakes up in a hospital bed, the sole survivor of the viral magic that killed his family and made him a technopath. His ability to control technology attracts the attention of the minister of defense and thrusts him into the magical elite of the nation of Carolinia. The son of undocumented immigrants, Noam has spent his life fighting for the rights of refugees fleeing magical outbreaks--refugees Carolinia routinely deports with vicious efficiency. Sensing a way to make change, Noam accepts the minister's offer to teach him the science behind his magic, secretly planning to use it against the government. But then he meets the minister's son--cruel, dangerous, and achingly beautiful--and the way forward becomes less clear. Caught between his purpose and his heart, Noam must decide who he can trust and how far he's willing to go in pursuit of the greater good.

Breezed through this one for #DystopianDeccember! I really enjoyed it. Great magic system and dystopian world set near my home town, so that was fun. It left me wanting to read the next one, but after reading some reviews I don't know if I can. This one talks about known abuse between father towards son, and reviews said the next one goes into detail... Not sure I can do that right now. Too close to my job.

It was a reread for me, but I still loved it this time around.

An amazing story with race and gender diversity that tackles a lot of key issues that we're going through today - racial inequalities, exploitation of power and immigration to name a few.
Noam and Dara were amazing characters and well written, and the world was as familiar as it was alien which is what I always like in an urban fantasy.
A strong start to the series 😁

I just couldn‘t get into this one. Too confusing at the start and I couldn‘t find the effort needed to try to remember who was who and what year it is/was. From other reviews it looks this book is mainly setup for the rest of the series but it shouldn‘t need that much setup. You gotta get interest & make me want to keep reading pretty early on.

Just finished The Fever King this morning which has a gay 🏳️‍🌈 relationship although I believe both boys are bisexual. It‘s also sci-fi with some powers elements and some riots and protests and immigration issues involved. I really enjoyed this one and am dying for the next volume! Lots of twists at the end. Features Calli in her snuggle ball #dogsoflitsy

A day late or almost two. Was tagged by @Pageturner1 and @magyklyXdelish

Today it was 80s and stormy on and off.

This week I started a low carb diet after I met with a dietician and started weight loss meds through my doctor.

I tagged one but I‘m reading Witchling by Yasmine Galenorn as well.

1. All of the above, depending on the book. I like to support my local used bookstore as much as possible.
2. Usually 2-3 days, depending on the book and what's going on in life.
3. The tagged book was due back at the library, and I just didn't feel the need to finish it. I was about halfway through. I might return to it one day.

Heavy on the political with a dystopian/sci-fi flare. A super slow burn with lots of technical setup. Occasionally boring if you are not much for political minutia. A highly intense plot with good character interaction. The last fifty or so pages is where you'll find nearly all of the plot movement. I'll be continuing the story with the hope that the writing will open up to something more comfortable now that the groundwork has been laid.

This was somewhere between a pick and so-so for me - the big surprise twist didn‘t really shock me, and I still have some unanswered questions about the world building. Despite that, I liked the characters and thought the author did a good job of showing their struggle to achieve their goals without corrupting themselves, and how they struggled with moral decisions.

now that it is NOT 2 am and I have a bit more natural light (it‘s storming so there‘s not a lot) I can better show off my #SCififantasyswap package. These are the Books!!!!

They are awesome. I have been telling Josh for a while now I need to get Superman so I can complete my collection. Plus I saw the Darkest minds movie and figured I would like the book better and now I get to find out.

I have not read Chima in years and look forward 👇🏻

LibrarianRyan To starting this book. I admit to knowing about the Fever except it has an excellent cover. And look I finally have a copy of Murder Bot 1. I have book 3 I think. This will be the first one I read!!! 6y

I don't...know if I liked this? There were good parts but I just didn't like anyone for like a good chunk of the book. There's so much emotional manipulation and the weird statutory rape situation. I'm kinda utterly confused about what power everyone has. Like no one seems to actually know anything about each other which seems odd for a government of magic ppl. There was just a lot that I didn't get. However, I actually really liked the writing.

mdemanatee Appreciate the review. May attempt a library loan as my TBR allows rather than using a scribd audio loan. 6y

This book was AMAZING! It was fast paced and kept you guessing. The characters were very well written and the main character was flawed but trusting (very human). Not that it really added to the story because someone's sexuality is there sexuality but the main character was bisexual and in a dystopian/fantasy novel you don't see that often and I was pleasantly surprised by it! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ #netgalley

WhatWouldJaneDo Yay! I picked this up for Amazon first reads recently, really excited to read it now. Great review! 6y

I'm so glad this is a series because it cannot leave it there! There were a few times I questioned Noam as a character because he seemed so unreliable, but as things became clear... I shall say no more for fear of spoilers. I liked the way the story addressed important issues that we're dealing with in the world today without sugar coating or tiptoeing around them. The story moved along quickly, and it might have been nice to have a little more...

TCLinrow ... detail in a few key scenes, but it was nonetheless enjoyable to read. I got lost in the world every time I picked it up to read. I would definitely recommend it!❤💜💙 And that marks the first book ticked off my reading list, although I have a lot of them started already 😊 6y

'All of them were so very proud an accident of birth made them Carolinian and bought them a lifetime of safety and privilege instead of fear and poverty and death. They ought to walk into that camp with the ground soaked in blood and magic and look Bea King in the face as she died alone and frightened at eight years old, at eight years old, and tell her she didn‘t deserve to stay in their country because her parents brought her here illegally.'

'Noam wasn‘t sure he liked being discussed as a business acquisition much more than he liked being looked down upon for his parents‘ nationality, but this time he kept his mouth shut. There was probably some cosmic quota for the amount of sass you could get away with in one day, and Noam wouldn‘t be surprised if that cold black-haired man was keeping score.'

Oh, this book! These boys! Their magic, and their trauma, and SO much angst. The beginning, the set up, took a little time to get into, but then it took off in a major way. There‘s a shit-ton of intrigue, and second guessing at character motivation. The world building is superb, and so politically relevant. Add in that Dara, Noam, and Lehrer are #ownvoices Jewish and it is a must read. I can‘t wait for the next book.

My first goal for March is to clear my in-progress books. I‘m going to start with Blood for Blood because it‘s the one with the most read so far. We‘re going to be snowed in this weekend, so I should be able to make some progress.

RainyDayReading Love the cover for the Broken Circle one! It‘s just too pretty! 6y
bookandbedandtea That's my favorite of these covers, @RainyDayReading. It's so beautiful. I was leaning towards the tagged book but I can't stop looking at Broken Circle so I might go with it. 6y
