On Earth We're Briefly Gorgeous
On Earth We're Briefly Gorgeous | Ocean Vuong
Brilliant, heartbreaking, tender, and highly original poet Ocean Vuong's debut novel is a sweeping and shattering portrait of a family, and a testament to the redemptive power of storytelling On Earth We're Briefly Gorgeous is a letter from a son to a mother who cannot read. Written when the speaker, Little Dog, is in his late twenties, the letter unearths a family's history that began before he was born a history whose epicentre is rooted in Vietnam and serves as a doorway into parts of his life his mother has never known, all of it leading to an unforgettable revelation. At once a witness to the fraught yet undeniable love between a single mother and her son, it is also a brutally honest exploration of race, class, and masculinity. Asking questions central to the American moment, immersed as it is in addiction, violence, and trauma, but undergirded by compassion and tenderness, On Earth We're Briefly Gorgeous is as much about the power of telling one's own story as it is about the obliterating silence of not being heard. With stunning urgency and grace, Ocean Vuong writes of people caught between disparate worlds, and asks how we heal and rescue one another without forsaking who we are. The question of how to survive, and how to make of it a kind of joy, powers the most important debut novel of many years.

I had to put this book down so many times while I was reading sometimes because of the beauty of a single sentence and sometimes because of the overwhelming emotion it made me feel. This is a beautiful, poetic novel that deserves all of the praise it has received. Loved it.

This is a letter that will never be read, from a son, Little Dog, to his mother who cannot read. It‘s a story of war, of immigration, of language, of love, of brutality, of race, of sexuality....of just so much, in this slim little book.
It definitely feels more like a memoir than it does a novel, it felt very truthful, and the words carried such weight. It was fractured and poetic in a really good way. It may be brief, but it sure was gorgeous 💕

KarenUK @cinfhen you were soooo right! I did love it! 😍 6d

-Finished My family and other animals. Charming, funny and eccentric in an a lovely oId fashioned way.💕
- Read first chapter of the Ocean Vuong and loving the writing.📚
- finished my re-read of a favorite. Sarah Winman did an awesome job narrating her own novel 🎧
But..

Stunning! It's at once raw and polished: the themes make for a difficult read but the writing is such that I didn't want to put it down. If I didn't already know he was a poet I'd say he deserves the name for his writing here. What else can I say? It was well worth the three months I waited for it.

This was a lyrical, beautiful story that read like a memoir. It packs an emotional punch, yet also contains themes of hope and resilience. Reading this, I was reminded of the life story of one of my former refugee clients, especially in regards to how war, violence and PTSD can impact a family long after they are resettled in a new country.

Definitely a top read of 2019!

Not for me. 😕. The writing is beautiful. Some of it was more like poems than a novel.. But the storyline was way too all over the place for me follow. If it had been told linearly, I felt like maybe I could have gotten more out of it, but I was usually just confused and trying to figure out what happened when.

Hooked_on_books I had the same issue. It was so fragmented that I could never quite get a hold on it. I ended up bailing halfway. 1mo

Brilliant & brutal. This one was difficult for me to listen to at times because of the visceral suffering of both people and animals in different forms. The words were lyrical but harsh. Narrated by the author, the #audiobook is most definitely the way to go. The boy, Little Dog, came of age in the same time I did and I felt deeply connected to the story because I could relate to the time, if not the experiences. Gorgeous, gorgeous. Recommended 🌟

Buechersuechtling I really like your review. I am having kind of uneasy day today and your words were a bit heart warming for me. Thank you for that. 🙇🏽‍♀️ 1mo

The writing is brilliant and lyrical. The story beautiful, brutal. And the unforgettable, recurring the images: fire, hummingbirds, monarchs, buffaloes, and my g-d, the monkeys.

I can‘t say it any better than Celeste Ng who tells us that the book is about: “whether putting words to one‘s experience can bridge wound that span generations, and whether it‘s ever possible to be truly heard by those we love most.”

I will never forget this book.

What a beautiful, sad book. So many beautiful sentences used to tell the story of the hard way of growing up when you‘re born in Vietnam, your family traumatized, and start a new life in America, where you are yellow and gay, small and with not enough English vocabulary to stand up for yourself. #TBRtemptations post #4! On the National Book Awards‘s fiction longlist! This is an intimate letter from a son addressed to his single mother. It is a novel of revealing one‘s self, the complicated relationship between mother and son, and understanding one‘s own familial background, in this case to Vietnam. Finished this beautiful book by the pool in equally stunning Napa. Ocean Vuong is known for his poetry so there‘s no argument that his prose would be just as exquisite. And it is. I highlighted and underlined many lines in this book. The only thing I did miss was more of the story. I wanted to know more of what happened and where it was going. Still, I would highly recommend because his writing is too good not to read.

Written with exquisite beauty, Ocean Vugon pens his deepest thoughts and darkest secrets in the form of a letter to his illiterate mother. It‘s his awakening and purgatory. The letter is a tracing and circling of his family‘s history of war, trauma, violence, abuse and fierce loyalty. With the most painful honesty Ocean Vuogn shares what it means to be an “other” in the United States. 👇🏼

Cinfhen A “yellow” person, someone who carries the language, culture, colors and memories from a place unfamiliar to most. My heart is heavy and deeply saddened though this book is marked fiction, it feels and reads like a memoir. 2mo
